Because most of the options mages have are... other robes.

The only reason I like smn blm sch whm is purely cause robes look ace. It gives them that magic fantasy ish feeling. Is like asking Gandalf to wear jeans and a hippie top .... Just wouldn't be right
As has been said many times, simply relaxing restrictions on the existing glamour system would alleviate many complaints.
If the tank can run around in a voluminous gown while wearing a snowman head, why can't the mage choose to use the appearance of a roguish chestpiece or an armored long coat?
I want more battle-like robes. If not, more eccentric robes, and not that Zoro stuff from our AF2 armor >.>
I'm a fan of the latest dungeon tank gear for this reason:

Wootz sets also look nice, but that could potentially be just because they're directly from XI. :P
I've been pretty mad at healer gear for a while, I've been wanting to make a more 'tribal' looking healer but so far I found nothing good with mage gear.
On a slight different subject, I also really wish they would start making healer gear more 'unisex' looking again… I'm the first to put my male character in a skirt, but unless it's your thing the last two healing set from ST and WOD can just look so ridiculous on males, especially Highlanders and Roes, and the new WHM i60 gear seem to be made the same. Bara character looking like a nun? Ehhhh.
For now I'm just hoping they don't ruin the male version of Astrologian, though I personally wouldn't mind having that fancy dress to change from the ugly pink/violet ones we have...
Edit, just remember that we can add some of the PvP gear set to the list of gear that look awful on males, such as the BLM and SCH gear set...
It's ok if you want to look like Gandalf, but please give me an option to look like these...

I'm not asking SE to remove or replace all the robes, just want some variation.
ITT: There's no pleasing anybody.
Personally I love the robes in this game... most of them. I despise the boring simplistic Bliauds, as I had to wear them or a basic cloth robe the entire time I was leveling (and I actually preferred those bed sheets to the bliauds). So to not have to wear them again would be great.
Though I'm not saying casters should only wear robes, there should be some coats or even perhaps light armor sets that aren't also robes as well. Diversity isn't a bad thing to have when there's millions of people who all have their own tastes.
But don't hate on robes, they're awesome. This game just needs more variety with it's robes instead of reusing the same style with a different texture.
Gary Gygax did - the creator of Dungeons and Dragons, which pretty much every RPG since has utilized basic elements from - one of which is indeed, class restrictions for armour (specifically, the 'no heavy armour on mages' rule.) FFXI's manual actually stated that BLMs can't wear heavy armour because (paraphrasing) "it would otherwise interfere with their ability to concentrate".
Really, if you want to wear heavy armour, maybe you should consider a career change to a tank class methinks?
^This pretty much. Once again, no matter what SE does, it's always wrong.
I completely agree. I enjoyed wearing some of the leveling gear. I think my fav during beta was the blue robe that was a reward from a CNJ quest. I liked the hooded robes that came from thanalan, all the caster AF sets, the Darklight set, and the sol/poetic gear. Except for the (fake) tail. Seemed a bit forced to me. Some sets are not to my taste, but I see no reason to hate on them.
More variety is always a good thing. Robes or otherwise. :)
(also, more thigh-high boots please) ;)
Silly goose. You know we can't ever have a fashion thread without someone harping on the butt thing. :3

Search me. I'm actually really fond of my black mage's casual outfit.
+1'd if only for more options.
While I do like the current robe options you can never go wrong with more choices.
Holy Breastplate from FFXI, I loved this on my WHM.

This is the type of armor/robes I'd like to see.

Not heavy at all.

To keep similarly to that "gandalf", old and wise wizard/sage while still looking epic

Can go without the headpiece but, yea.

This is how I remember my WHM from FFXI. I always liked this armor
Tanks don't really have much restriction in terms of style, material, and variety.

I like my Whm AF robe just fine (glamour ftw), I just wish the engine was capable of making them behave a little more like cloth. It's not horrible, but could uses a touch less starch. :p
Thing is, the mage gear (especially for healers) are slowly becoming haute couture gowns as opposed to mage gear.

Excuse me, let's not forget of the most fashionable he-black mage in Filgaia!
Wild Arms 4 - Arnaud G Vasquez!

I've always loved Aion's gear designs because they were so diverse in the styles throughout the years I've played .. from long robes to shorter ones, from basic Mage-type looks to more fashionable Haute Couture-type stuff. They even have just regular cloth-based fashion that you could " glamour " over your entire gear set. It's the only game where I keep going back for the fashion because it's sooo diverse and fun !
Of course there is slight variation of the sets between the two races, but generally they looked the same.
These are just my favourite sets~ You can google to find more.

These are the full level 30 Daevanion set pieces; you could get a piece each time you leveled a character to 30 and could exchange the material of the pieces to get a full set..

Gunner is " magic leather ", and bard is cloth (though that style is mostly for the job).. but they have stats catered to those particular classes. I am hoping Heavensward has sets similar to this that is more dark and Dragon-based ! This style is inspired by Dragon Lord Beritra, who is launching invasion into Elysea, Asmodae and Balaurea in the 4.7 storyline.

" Innocent Aris's " set was really cute and you could acquire it from " guestbloom " planting system for housing. People could visit your house and water your guestbloom plant daily. After x amount of time, you had a chance to get a *random* weapon or clothing of this series.

These are both pvp sets, just 2 variations of each clothing type with slightly different stat builds. ← Plate / leather / chain / cloth →
I really liked these sets and favoured the lower cloth one, but they were so expensive and I couldn't get back into the game long enough to get ;__;
I know Aion has been out much longer so there is much more " set styles " from the many instance (also too, Aion has pve and pvp sets...), but I really hope in the future we see a lot more different themes, cuts and colour because I really like variation ! I think we'll get there !
Thanks for posting who came up with the rule... Let's See Dungeons and Dragons 1st came out in 1974. I think its high time we can break with tradition... Though I loved XI, this is XIV, again, we can break with tradition. I'm not saying I want HEAVY armor, but some of the pics people have been posting of mages in armor look cool as hell, can we take a page from that? I'm also not saying I dislike robes, but some variation would be appreciated. I very much like some of these female designs (and some of them are still robes... just much more detailed or varied in their designs):
Very true, but it is still cloth. I can wear pretty much anything that isn't a long robe. Mages don't have much in terms of metal plating.
Which is pretty pointless. All this glamor specific gear they keep adding defeats the purpose of the restrictions.
If the glamour restrictions are supposed to enforce the idea that mages wear magey gear and tanks wear tanky gear, I shouldn't be able to cast all these soft casual clothes on my armor, or they should just remove the class restrictions.
I'll be set with either, but all this indecisive inbetween nonsense isn't cutting it.
They need to not show these gear sets on just ONE race, but if they must, they need to show it on something NOT a lala.
These D&D Clerics have some words to say about that:
