Honestly I don't remember those either. What I DO remember is LSs sending out scouts to get ToDs for any NM that was actually worth anything and then gathering up, teleporting to the telepoint nearest to the NM, and then arriving as a large group and blanketing the area well before the next spawn to get the jump on them. No one HAD to instantly travel across Vana'diel for them because the only thing that was crazily contested endgame were HNMs and they had, like, 24 hour re-pop timers so they were pretty easy to pin down for the most part.
Basically what I'm saying is that if we're comparing this problem to FFXI it had similar problems but just required more planning due to its travel limitations.
Also to throw my stance out there I like the current system better too. I like to ride to places a lot but bunch of folks don't at all.
