why so mean?

My best advice for a new Gladiator, and I'm still somewhat new myself, but learn to "mark" mobs, in other words you need to mark at least "1" for the mob you're focused on killing, it will help you a lot with hopefully the DPS following your "marks". If you put a "1" on a mob, the DPS should focus on that mob first. Very basic, and very helpful, especially for new Gladiators. You can "hotkey" the "1" so that you can do it quickly and easily. Sometimes it's best to kill one mob first over another, as you progress you'll learn more about that. You can also "tab" between different mobs to make sure your "hate meter" (bar on the left of your party health bars) on the mobs is high for you.

If people are using bad experiences with power-leveled players in i90/i100 gear in endgame dungeons as a reason for treating newcommers like crap, then there's a real problem. People shouldn't be trash talking new players because they've met some lousy players at endgame.

Lets assume a console player. They're new to the game at least and perhaps to MMOs, so something comes up they don't quite understand. Their options for figuring it out are:

A) Leave the game. Go to the next room. Power up the computer. Wait through its interminable boot sequence. Then they can try Googling something they may or may not have a good keyword for.

or

B) Ask in chat. Stay involved in the game. Perhaps spark a discussion. Maybe meet some friendly players on the server in the process.


Given that (A) leaves the game dead and silent, while (B) keeps some friendly (and potentially useful to other new players) conversations going, the player who chooses option (B) is doing far more to enhance everyone's game as well as their own.

Now, I'll admit that occasionally Google has its place. If you're looking for an in-depth player guide, there's some nice ones out there. But anyone resorting to Google just to ask a simple question that came up while they were playing is doing a disservice to the game as a whole. They had an opportunity to enhance the game and they squandered it.

So please, ask your questions in chat. (The /shout channel is generally good for this.) You'll make someone's day giving them the chance to help you out with something.

I agree with Niwashi. Also I don't think "just google it" should be considered a valid response to a question in game. You have to remember that some people play on PS4 and can't "just google it" all the time. I have a friend who has a ps4 and that is it. No PC, no laptop. If someone in game asks me a question, I myself will sometimes google things so that I can respond to them, but I do it because I can simply alt + tab to a web browser where the person asking the question may not be able to.

Also when you tell someone to google it instead of giving them a valid response, you're really just sending the message that "you're too lazy to give a good response so just go away". So by not helping someone and giving a rude response, all you are doing is breeding more jaded assholes for end game, thus making the problem worse. Be part of the solution and not the problem.

I'm sorry you ran into people like that. Obviously, not everyone is like that.

Here are some tips for a beginning gladiator. Most of these only apply when you are in dungeons (which start at level 15 if you're following the main quest).

1. Your enmity combo is Fast Blade -> Savage Blade (and later on, you'll get Rage of Halone as the third part of the combo). Use this as your primary means of attacking in dungeons. Do not use the Riot Blade combo even if it does slightly more damage. The difference is minor and keeping aggro is important.
2. Pull with Shield Lob (you get it from your level 15 class quest). This has a 3x enmity multiplier, meaning it's three times as good as opening with Fast Blade for getting that initial enmity.
3. Never pull with just Provoke. Provoke sets your enmity to the highest enmity in your party +1, so it is essentially wasted when used to pull and the first DPS to hit the target will steal aggro from you. That said, Provoke has a much longer range than Shield Lob. If you really need to pull something that's out of Shield Lob range (like, a patrolling enemy), Provoke to aggro, then Shield Lob when they get close enough.
4. After you pull a group of two or more enemies with Shield Lob, run into the middle of them and use Flash. This will get you initial aggro on all of the enemies you're fighting.
5. In the party list, to the left of people's names, are meters. These tell you how much enmity each person in your party has on your selected target. Whomever's bar is full should have an A next to their class icon indicating that they have aggro and the monster will attack them.
6. When you're fighting a group of enemies, be sure to cycle through them regularly to see how full your party's enmity meters are on each. Remember that your job isn't to deal damage, but to keep aggro on everything. Do this by finding which monster you're closest to losing aggro on due to another party member's enmity bar filling up, and comboing that monster with your enmity combo.
7. An easier way to keep aggro on a group of enemies is to just flash between each combo. This is not as efficient and drains your MP fast, but it's easier to do.
8. When fighting 5+ enemies at once, just spam flash. You probably won't be able to keep aggro on all of them, but when you are fighting this many enemies, it usually means they're really weak and die fast.
9. Mark enemies. I don't know the PS4 controls, but you should be able to assign the marks (the yellow 1, 2, 3 in octagons being the most important) to your hotbar. Mark the target you want dead first as 1, and so on. Don't bother marking the last enemy - a majority of people will understand that the unmarked one comes last. Make sure you get initial aggro on the one marked 1, as your DPSs will build enmity fast on that one.
10. Newer CNJs don't realize just how much enmity Regen generates. If you go into a fight with Regen on you, the first time it ticks, your healer will probably pull aggro. You can cancel a buff by rightclicking on it (no idea how with the PS4), and you should cancel Regen before pulling at low levels if it's on you.
11. Face enemies away from the party. Several enemies, and most bosses, have cleaving attacks that hit everything in an arc in front of them. Many enemies and bosses also have AoEs that they point in front of them. By facing them away from the party, these attacks will only have a chance of hitting you. To face them away, after you throw your shield lob in, run through and past them before stopping and turning around to fight them.
12. Use CDs ("Cooldowns" - the buffs that take a while before you can use them again) liberally. They recharge pretty fast (most in 60-120 seconds) and are an important part of damage mitigation.
13. Fairly early into the game, you unlock the Armory System, which gives you the ability to change your class at will. When you can, switch to MRD and level it up to level 2. This gives you the cross-class skill "Foresight" which is a defense-raising CD. To equip cross-class skills, open your skill menu (P on the computer, no idea on the PS4), and go to the cross-class skill section. You get one cross-class skill slot every 5 levels as a base class (like GLA), and every 10 levels as a Job (like PLD). For leveling (not dungeons), you might want to consider also getting the skill Feint from Lancer level 2. You can't use it later in the game when you become a PLD, but it can really help in the low levels.

i main as a WHM, so unless people are stupid and not listen to advice, im very helpful. when people dont listen, i stop healing. i had a dragoon who would not stop pulling, i advised him to stop and let the tank build hate, but after a few more pulls, i let him die. i ran cutters cry as blackmage, and the white mage who was healing, had no idea what to do. when we got to the first boss and he didnt know what kiting was, so i told him that he was supposed to run around the dungeon with all the adds and cast regen. he didnt have regen, lv 35 WHM skill, so all the adds were tanked, and after the fight, i told him how to get to his job quests. i was very nice about it, because he listened. most people dont listen, which is why everyone acts so mean. when you try to help or correct someone and they never listen, you eventually stop

This is my first MMO so like you I didn't know a lot of lingo and I just googled every single time I heard something I didn't know.

I'm actually going to interject here. First off, the "go google it" thing... I completely understand, doing your research beforehand does help out immensely. But telling someone to google something while in-game won't help the current situation at all and it actually comes across as condescending and lazy as other people in the thread have said. It only works when there is free time before or after the dungeon and when the person has a clear idea of what terms they need to be googling, and it still doesn't invalidate asking questions and giving tips during the dungeon. Because watching a video or reading up on something and actually experiencing that thing firsthand are two different things, one can leave you more prepared for the other but can never fully take its place.

Secondly, I can't really say I care how bad a day someone has had or how many times they've run that instance. Those are thin excuses for bad behavior. If some people are going to be outright abusive towards others, then those other players have the right to not put up with it. For me, it depends on the severity of the situation; I've had to go as far as reporting someone to a gm before for verbal harassment and griefing. "Mean" is just a simplified blanket term for what I'm assuming the OP is talking about in reference to df most probably. Some of the works of art that df drops into your party will zoom right past "mean" and off into a completely different territory before you can say hello. :3

Really sorry if it came across condescending but what I meant was that I googled. A LOT. And no that doesn't help you that moment, but after I found something I didn't know I'd google it when I had my hands free again. I googled a lot of things. I googled some things multiple times.

This remark was meant independent of how other people behave, but about your own pro-activity. Though I got the impression that the OP is trying his/her best and that is more than enough. You can't do more than that.

Of course it is a bad excuse. But it is still something that happens.
Maybe the person on the other side is just a jerk, maybe they were just having a bad day, I don't know.

The issue is, it comes down to mutual respect. As a new player you shouldn't expect anyone to continually have to hold your hand. As a experienced player you shouldn't expect anyone new to the instances to be flawless. I don't mind a few wipes if you can see progress is being made and ppl are trying to learn and seeking and using the advice giving. The problem revolves around the greatly occurring runs with the "I will play like I want" mindset. Ie thornmarch hard last night was just a free for all with the same new ppl to the instance refusing to attack the marked targets in order. Then again I've met a few just blatant rude elitist.

On the whole PS4 nonsense about being difficult to use google come on if you have the funds to buy a PS4 you can have a laptop or smartphone. I use a PS4 and constantly google on my phone to make things easier on myself. As on the group I don't want to be "that guy" who screws up repeatedly and cost everyone time.

I play on the Midgard server. I have only ever had one person not be so nice. He wasn't mean but he just kept tanking instead of letting me do it. Other than that between the game and the forums everyone has been so helpful. I think if typing wasn't so hard on the PS4 without a USB keyboard maybe PS4 players would be more inclined to help others with a quick tip or two. I only recently got one and I'm glad I did.

I do a lot of research while playing. I tend to keep to myself and not bother anyone. Not because I may mess up, but because I know I'm not skilled enough to take on many of the tasks a tank should already know how to do. I like to be confident when I help others or when I prove my worth. At the moment, I'm just working on getting better at the game and getting stronger. I have my tablet at my disposal for Google etc. if I have questions and I hold my own when I fight for myself. If you have to ask questions, be as courteous and try to ask someone who isn't running about but might be stationary. I found from other MMOs that people who are running are usually busy. Famfrit is a pretty quiet server and I have yet to encounter any ill. I wish you luck! Don't let others attitudes hinder your progress. :)

Don't pay attention to what SeraviEdalborez said "noobs" . Players like this are just showing how they feel about themselves.

This is my very first mmo too! Some things that helped me:

1. Get a USB keyboard. This is a social game and you need to communicate with people.
2. Tell your group you are new and appreciate any tips. Explaining fights can take 30 seconds and prevent avoidable wipes. It's very frustrating to join a dungeon, see the new player notification and get silence when I ask who is new. I'm asking so I can help!
3. Carefully read every skill description as you unlock it and ask questions to your friends on how they use those skills.
4. Read the forums for tips on how to improve.
5. Join a helpful free company and linkshells. They can run through dungeons your first time, discuss the game with you over chat, and help clear content.

I guess the answer to the question why people are mean in any kind of situation, environment, etc. is the same and was greatly put in an old (great one by the way!) movie.

Just don't bother with people who have bad attitude. You will have to suffer few minutes with them (even less if you kick them), while they have to spend the whole life with themselves!

Encountering someone's nasty attitude early in the game really affects the rest of your time in game (personal experience.) Lots of folks upstream have offered good suggestions. I will add a few things:

As a new person, be patient when asking for help. To you, it may appear High Level Person isn't being to quick to answer but you may be the 4th person in ten minutes to ask for help.

When in a dungeon, take a quick moment to say something like "I'm new to this boss, can I get a quick strat please?" It will help immensely to go with FC/LS friends who know in advance that you are new to the dungeon. Everyone will be more chill about it.

It is VERY important that you learn your skills. Read up on your rotations on the class sub-forums here on the OF.

If you need help with gear, ask for advice rather than asking for the items themselves. It can take crafters a while to make a set of gear if they generously offer. Never ask when it will be ready. =_=

Pay it forward. If people help you out, in turn, go and help others. :)

Even reading a guide online can casue issues if there are multiple ways to clear a boss. There are many examples, but one that comes to mind right away is Tam Tara HM. Some people like to pull the wedding party away from the group, and have the boss's target run to them. Other people like to just stack everyone together right on top of the boss and not move. It is always best practice at any level to take 2 minutes to go over the prefered strat before going in to avoid confusion.

Even with a keyboard (which I really recommend everyone should have), giving tips can still be hard in a dungeon, unless you're the tank. The tank is the one to set the pace of a run, so the tank can stop to type out a message, and in most cases the group will wait for him/her to do so. For anyone else, trying to communicate all too often means letting the rest of the group run on ahead to the next area and fight without you.

So a tip for tanks: It's a good idea for groups to stop a few moments both at the beginning of a dungeon, and again right before each boss fight. Even if you don't have something to say, it's a time when other players are likely to want to either ask or explain something. Give them time enough to do so.

Yes. Yes it does. I was afraid of Duty Finder for MONTHS because of some abusive players encountered early on. The only thing that kept me even playing this game was the fact that I had some RL friends playing with me.

I always try to offer advice on everything. Today I was in a Lost City run with 3 players new to the instance. The tank was in Gallant gear, so he was pretty squishy but we took the pulls slow and it was no problem. We wiped once at the first boss, the second boss was a little slow, and we had three wipes at Diabolos. All three players were receptive to advice; one of them was helping me mark doors (I am just not very fast at it and the party had low dps so we needed three sets) and everyone was learning from each misstep and improving on the next attempt.

Being a returning "new player" myself I have yet to run into rude people, but I expect it sooner or later. No matter what game I have ever played, you always end up with those "types" that make your blood boil. Not really much we can do about it other than ignore or report. I think the general problem is folks are just in too much of a hurry and seem to be very selfish and they will take it out on you. Instead of helping another player or understanding they are new, the new player is hampering their progress.

I've only been at this game a few days, and so far, I've only run into nice folks. I was in a fight with some random monster, and in the middle of it, some passerby decide to help me out by casting some kind of Stoneskin spell on me, and another guy in Ul'dah just up and gave me some body armor that was better than what my PC was wearing.

I suppose at some point I will run into a jerk or two, it seems inevitable as it has happened before in my somewhat limited experience with MMOs. I'll deal with it like I did the others - ignore or report (depending on how bad they were.)
