Well.. I think most people are only taking what they want out of that sentence and in doing so are setting themselves up to be let down. I guess we'll find out soon enough. For the record, I hope I'm wrong.

Exactly, it never really serves a purpose except to allow someone to leapfrog a level of gear. Properly overmelded Vanya allows you to skip most Darklight for example. But you can't meld Darklight. So where is the real value in using Materia? As I see there is none. Not until the system is more transparent, and more items can be melded. I'll continue to use it if the system remains the same, but I'd love for the Materia System to be overhauled so that it matters at all levels of play rather than specific gear ranges. It would be a great way to get the whole gear stat game rolling.
I don't know about anyone else, but I love napkin-mathing gear at endgame to see which combination of gear etc gets me the most VIT or ACC or Parry. But that doesn't exist in FFXIV. A proper Materia System could change all that for the better.
Personally I hope for some means of growing/splitting materia off like in VII once you hit 100% SB, since at this juncture most people can't afford to convert their(likely partially or fully melded) convertible Lv50 gear.
I really hope whatever they do it makes me care about materia. So far, asides from selling it from time to time, I really don't have a need or want of it. Since I can't convert my high level gear, and can't add materia to that gear, I don't remember the last time I even used any.
New system where you trade materia in for tomes so you can buy myth/soldiery gear faster, cuz ya know, you aren't buying crafted gear to put materia in anyway.
They've mentioned being able to customize your relic, so Im assuming they'll allow you to meld onto higher level gear.
The actual quote is: "Patch 2.25 will focus on additions and adjustments to the Wolves' Den, as well as a new system involving materia."
The "as well as..." does not mean the materia system refers to the wolves' den. It is referring to Patch 2.25's focus. If it was about the wolves' den, the sentence would have read "Patch 2.25 will focus on additions, ajustments, as well as introducing a new system involving materia to the Wolves' Den."
Edit- Hooray for English degrees. They're useful sometimes.
I agree with your interpretation. If it were a new system involving materia just for PvP, then the sentence is redundant. A new system involving materia for PvP would count as an addition to the Wolves' Den.
Of course, it could also be possible that SE bungled something up in the translation...it wouldn't be the first time.
The EN translation on that part is correct.
The JP live letter says:
The particle "や" (ya) means "and" in English, and here it is used to separate "content update to PVP Wolf's Jail (that's what the Japanese call it) and System updates related to Materia. So it would mean: Content updates to Wolf's Den and updates to the Materia system.Quote:
まずパッチ2.25では、お待たせしているPvPコンテンツ"ウルヴズジェイル"のアップデートや、
マテリア関連のシステムアップデートが行われます。
I would love to see some of these things be the case, but I really just hope it has nothing to do with pvp... Blah!!
Either cap it, slow SB down on a non-linear progressive curve for each materia added, straight up make the success chance lower per successive materia, or put in a simple system of diminishing returns after 2 materia per item slot: IE X Material gives 5% bonus, but if it's the 3rd Materia on the item it only gives 3.5% or something (all numbers are just BS and used for effect).
I think you may have misread, her idea was that you could combine lower-level materia, perhaps via a crafting process, and produce higher-level materia. No gear destruction involved.
Another really cool thing would be if you could combine the effects of two different types of materia into a hybrid materia. Did someone else say that here yet?
they said in the last live letter that they will be reworking the materia system, so it is not pvp only
Except if SE follows pattern even if they did this they would most likely not enable coil2 gear to be materia melded until after further content had been added and the old nerfed anyway.
This also brings to mind with me anyway what happens to gear you want melded but have already glamoured, I dunno.
What high-grade materia actually is, I guess we find out on our own.Quote:
I Got a Good Materia Obtain a high-grade materia through transmutation.
Tier 5? You know, since we had the tier 5 carbon matter since launch.
I heard that on the french release notes page it's explained as combining 5 materia to get a higher grade one.
. . . Kinda glad I create all my materia myself because this is really going to make the lower-tier materia hard to come by on the market board and we do still need those for penta-melding. Overall a welcome change, though, and something to do with all the unwanted materia sloshing around in our FC chest.
"You convert the Saurian Shirt of Striking into a Water Materia V."

Well, jokes aside, elemental materia should get a use in the future.
I like the idea of changing overmelding to a system which enables you to influence the outcome and reduce the pure RNG factor.
And I also agree that the stat caps should be visible when you select an item in the melding window.
Off topic:
And why do people always come up with the argument that crafters will always be needed to craft gear for materia conversion and to meld materia?
Why become a master crafter if all you do is meld materia and craft 0-star gear?
Game is back online I heard. Still at work so did anybody already do the quest and can tell us how it works? Can you choose the Materia you will receive? Or is it just a RNG upgrade +1, for example take 5x Materia I and receive a random Materia II for it or use 5x Materia III to receive a random Materia IV?
I have only tried it 3 times, but it seems to give you a random materia from ANY of the same tier
So 5 materia I's gives a random materia I, 5 materia IV's give a materia IV
Off topic:
Which is lvl1 and where NQ/HQ makes no difference. ;)
I'd like to be able to make my own endgame gear. Bind on pickup, I don't care.
But I feel a bit silly having almost max overmelds and being able to HQ 3-star gear, just to get asked to make a Hempen Camise...
Baffling. They can BUY a hempen chemise in any of the starting towns.
Let's hope it's impossible to get back the same materia you use for transmutaion.
Combining 5 CP+1 materia to get 1 CP+1 materia would suck ^^
You know, people even buy stuff from AH they could get from an NPC in the same area for half the price ><
WTF u serious? Turn in 5, get 1 random ????? LMAO. And if you are real lucky, you turn in 5 Earth resistance Materia III and receive one Earth resistance materia III? Or a wind resistance III? This is a joke, right? No? Oh boy, my hopes were high when I saw the patch notes but this is just ridiculous.
If they would have made it like use 5 Materia and determine which kind of Materia of the same level you would like to get or if they would have make it so that you get one random Materia of the next higher tier, I would have been cool with it. But that's just more of the same and already known lottery game.
So instead of having 5 materia I can use for sprit bonding I may have just one? Sometimes it is amazing what they come up with. And for such features they find time while Fantasia and Choccobo reset still await a solution? Just amazing how deeply they seem to be in love with their RNG elements.
Thanks for the information nevertheless. So I know it is nothing I need to do urgently.
They had ONE JOB:
Look at Diablo II's Horadric Cube Gem combining. Implement EXACTLY that.
Square Enix has a rare talent for screwing up good ideas.
. . . Semi-baffled as to what they were intending here? Unwanted lower-tier materia already had a niche in speeding-up spirit-bonding, which is a much more reliable way of producing high-grade materia than this seems to be.
Some players posted their results: http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...ia-achievement
So it's possible to get higher tier materia.
