This is what me and my wife were thinking after the final cutscene.
Incorrect. Thancred even says that he is a Bard when you talk to him in the new hideout before the 2.2 quests were added. He was not a GLD at all and was instead masquerading as a Bard.
Also do you have a link to that live letter? I thought he said he agreed the game needed a scout class, but I don't remember him specifically using thief as a base for ninja. Even still that was him spit balling anyway and it isn't really something we can base our assumptions on.
Agreed that Merlwyb is always shooting stuff, so not a big deal.
If we do see Thief and Ninja stemming off a Scout job....we know Thancred was a Bard and Gladiator at some point. So will we see those two as cross class to the new jobs?
Here we go again. Can't you just appreciate it for what it is without seeing "teasers" in every frame?
Smh some guys never learn. Never ever.
The problem with a shadow tank is that tanks in this game rely in mitigating damage on a more constant basis. With Paladin this is through block and and Warrior with parry, and both with high defense and HP. Anyone who's played ninja tanks will tell you, once those shadows are down they are as good as dead if there's no off-tank to take hate while they recast Utsusemi, and if your casting is interrupted then it's all but over. Ninjas, at least in XI, aren't tanks. They're DDs pretending to be tanks. In this game there's not alot you can dodge at-level, either. Ninja is likely going to be a DD or support Job. And yes, thief makes more sense than Thief. It's all speculation right now, though, so no point getting all uppity at peoples' opinions.
Ok, its all cool but.... How can Yugiri teach us how to ninja if she only appears during the lv50 quest? Do we unlock ninjas only @lv50? Or she will teach us @lv30 then suddenly she will be seeking asylum? Btw, Thief is probably a job not a class, xD
He said he was a bard in the Ul'dah starting cutscene as well (if I'm recalling correctly), which was made before FFXIV had jobs (Jobs were added after Yoshi-P took over). He's referring to being like a storyteller or poet, not being the bard job as we know it. His stance with the dagger in ARR was exactly like a GLD, so that's what people referred to him as.
Hmmm actually I'm not sure about that one. I guess it's kind of strange because Revenant's Toll is updated to have more structures and such when, if you did the quest at launch, it was in ruins as per the storyline. Maybe they'd get away with it by not having her be the main teacher, just that she, along with Thancred, have proteges who pass on the teachings.
Norg was just on an island southeast of the Mindartian continent, it is much much closer than the Aradjiah continent (where Aht Urhgan is located). http://www.ffxi-atlas.com/images/world_index.jpg
Thief or scout what ever it will be called we can be certain this new Dual Dagger class will have 2 Jobs to split from being that 1 Tank path and 1 DPS path since it is far easier to introduce 2 Jobs for a new class.
Base Class design may follow a DPS class until lvl 30 when you must choose to be DPS role Job or a Tank role Job.
Remember stats in this game are not complicated so as a DPS Scout will follow the STR for main stats (being a Melee class) while Vit stat if you go tank path.
In short, we're looking at this:'
- Thief class, Ninja Job (99% certain on this). All expectations at this point are speculation with varying levels
- Knives/daggers that were normally GLA weapons may be reassigned to the THF and be usable/interchangeable as both main AND offhands (trait?).
- Steal/Mug being iconic features of the THF class *may* be implemented to flavor this DPS as non-generic, such as an extra chance to obtain gil/items from an enemy in addition to their drops. Everything in regards to this remains pure speculation, regardless of fangirling the subject.
- It's highly, highly unlikely THF will be given the same stealth as DOL's, but I wouldn't write it off completely. No Steal/Mug class in the past has had access to unlimited invisibility and may break some dungeons with shortcuts.
It is extraordinarily doubtful that GLA will be getting a DPS alternative Job instead (like the Summoner/Scholar split) due to the expected differences in gear (lighter). It would be fair to assume a generic monk-dps-clone with some unique itemization quirks, possibly less DPS overall compared to more 'assault grade' dps'ers like the Monk, Dragoon, and BLM, and more in the region of support-dps like the BRD.
And where's your evidence on this that makes you 99% certain? Your speculation isn't any more viable than mine.
Which would screw with the armory system. What other class can equip two weapons at once?
My guess is GLA's alternate job will be RDM. But that's another thread.
This isn't really the case, Urianger was a ACN in 1.0 and that class didn't even exist back then, grants it was a bit different to the one we got in ARR but, there is no reason to believe that Thancred is a Gladiator.
As others have pointed out Thief won't be the class, none of the classes so far have taken the name of a FF job, I expect scout or assassin (Bandit, Burgler, Purloiner), or something like that.
No. Thief has always been a Final Fantasy Job. No different than a WHM. There is absolutely no reason to believe it would suddenly be a lowly class when it has always been a series staple. White mage was a conjurer not a white mage, and white mage was the series staple. To assume this would change now would be to ignore absolutely everything this series has done up till now and to ignore everything this game has done till now. This game is extremely heavy on the fan service after all. Following the conventions already given to us I can say very confidently that Thief is in no way the class.
Or they can leave them as is and add more daggers and simply list the job requirement on the weapon as the new job required. This is no different than the way SMN and SCH books are handled. Also, we shouldn't assume we can equip two different blades. It's entirely likely the system will be just like the monks where we equip 1 item and it fits both hands.
All very interesting points.. But on thing I would like to point out is the fact that, after all the events of 2.2 ..when you go to talk to one of the children who were hyped to be an adventurer like you, he states something to the wording of "Balance is very important in our training where we come from, we are taught to run across tree tops."
Sounds like Ninja to me! My guess is some type of base class will result in it splitting off to thief and ninja. Rogue base branches to Ninja and thief maaybe?? Rogue normaly has the idea of a thief type plus im sure the term "rogue ninja" has been heard by everyone. I dont think im too far off base with this assesment
Ya most likely we will see new weapons for new classes/jobs but some of them can be simply different versions of current weapons unique to the new class/jobs such as Melee Mage obtaining Rapier as their weapon which we all should know Rapier is a one-handed sword but the name is use to identify the weapon for Melee Mage.
Scout class can be given Dual Daggers as their weapon functioning like the PUG/MNK Weapon. It is still daggers but it is two daggers which can be equipped only by Scout class and its two jobs. The weapons may even obtain unique names such as maybe Ninja relic can be have a name represent the two daggers sucn as "??? & ???" as their names to represent the weapon a dual daggers.
As a long-time fan of Final Fantasy thieves like Locke and Zidane, and as a career THF in FFXI, I came into this game in 1.0 expecting to play a Thief. This patch's cutscenes have given me hope that, at long last, after two and a half years, my favorite job may finally be within grasp. Of course I have some strong opinions on the matter.
First, as has been said already, Thief is a Job. It should not be added as a class. "But Quintalian, in FF1 Ninja came from Thief!" Well guess what, in FF1 you used spell charges to cast magic instead of MP and if one party member killed an enemy that the next party member was targeting, he would swing at empty space instead of targeting another enemy. Final Fantasy has evolved since then and in later games, Thief and Ninja are distinct from each other. Warrior (aka Fighter) changed class into Paladin (aka Knight) in FF1, yet both of those are Jobs in FFXIV. Quit using the FF1 example for your argument, it doesn't hold water.
What's the name of the class would we unlock? I like Scout (SCT) a lot better than Rogue (ROG?). Plus 'rogue' ends up misspelled as 'rouge' way too often, and that's just embarrassing. How about Saboteur or Spy? Historically, real ninja did those things as well, it sort of fits.
Next, I don't think GLA will lose its existing daggers as the dev team seems loath to take away anything from the player base. Notice how there's a lot of items on the Market Board that can't be obtained anymore, yet haven't been removed from the game, e.g. beastmen currency, moraines, old dye materials, etc. So it's all new daggers and knives for the new class. How would the new class dual wield? Double daggers is fine, but I would rather see them use two individual daggers. Being able to mix or match weapons could open up some interesting gear choices. Just as conjurer can use either wands or staves, perhaps both options could be possible?
Last, what about the guild? It'll most likely be in a separate zone -- it is a secret, after all -- located somewhere in Limsa Lominsa near where we part ways with Yugiri. That little branch of the city isn't really used for much, it would benefit from a bit more (discrete) foot traffic. Don't expect Thancred to teach you its ways, he's a Scion now, with important duties. He can't be hanging around waiting to train aspiring scoundrels in some guild hall. We'll learn the trade from whoever it is that taught Thancred in the first place, and probably pick up some juicy secrets about Thancred in the process. Yugiri, on the other hand, stated outright that she would personally teach us, and I expect she'll follow through on that.
I could go on, but this is enough. As my Search Info comment states, "Waiting patiently for the addition of the Thief Job!"
just a reminder at all the people saying thief must be a jobs and can't be the class, in Final Fantasy (the first one) Thief is the starting jobs and when you make it evolve you get... Ninja ^^.
other point i highly doubt that we will get a tank from the scout class, mostly because it's an heresy any good tank will tell you is not good and will often be either underpowered or overpowered.
in the cut scene we can notice two thing about the two fighting style:
- Yugiri seems to be more Area Oriented and attack multiple target and have some sort of control.
- Thancred is more about attack one target at the time.
this is the difference we can see:
- ninja is about DD AoE with CC a bit like the mage.
- Thief is about mono target probably with some debuff/support.
and you get two different jobs that will fit in two different role. (even if they are both DD)
How funny/ironic would it be if SE "ninja'd" the ninja job/class into the game without ever advertising or telling us about it? Someone would just.... stumble upon it, and then word would get it!
I could see Yoshi going for a Dark Knight (or whatever class is on WoW) but I'd like to be a pre-ninja from the get go... Well, either way is fine anyway =P
And you guys seem to forget that in RPG's, NPC's dont need to follow the class/jobs rules. They don't necessarily need a job to use magic, they are THAT awesome! :P
Yugiri might be hinting at the ninja, but then again, that could be like 1~1.5 years from now.. who knows. And didnt yoshi say that new classes are only on expansions and job could come in patches and he'd like to add all the classes that didnt make it to 1.0? I could be wrong and day dreaming tho =P
I see them adding scythes to the game as a THM weapon, then branching DRK off of that, giving THM a melee DPS job.
Yoshi already confirmed that Musketeer will be the first new class added to the game due to it being in the same boat as Arcanist in 1.0. But that doesn't mean it will be the only new class when it's added. He said this as part of his answer to the question of what new job he most wanted to add to the game. His answer was Red Mage, but he said a.) They need to figure out how they want to do it, and b.) They have to add Musketeer first because it was promised in 1.0.
I thought I saw some interview with Yoshi where he said they were basically done with the first expansion. So only they know what they're going to doooo~...
Why not? Both THM and CNJ have staves and wands. GLAs have swords and daggers.
People have speculated that if Samurai is added, it'll branch off Lancer and great katanas will become a new weapon for LNC to equip. People have speculated that when the THF/NIN class is added they will take daggers away from GLA.
Point being, if SE says they're adding scythes to the game as a THM weapon, then scythes will be a THM weapon. That's how the armoury system works.
If I remember right back in 1.0 GLD used to have a a high lvl skill that aloud them to use 2 swords not just 1. Was the main reason i was lvling GLD back in the day.
It is actually that very system that would allow the opposite of what you're saying. Ex: Gladiator/paladin can use both daggers and swords, Thm/blm can use both scepters and staves, Whm/cnj can use both wands and staves.
Whm/cnj/blm/thm can all use staves. The difference? The classes placed on the item as restrictions and general look of the weapons. They could easily add say scythe (though I think it unlikely) to thm for levels 1-29 and then at 30 it branches off to being only for drk if Eekiki is correct.
That all being said though, drk using scythes... ugh. My personal preference though, please no scythe. Leave it on the farm where it belongs.
I pray so hard that it would be a NIN class. It won't, for the same reasons THF won't be a class. I'd just love to see these Ninja weabos get riled up.
Again, its not too much of a stretch that there will only be 1 new Job for the class introduced. As well as there's no guarantee that we'll get a Tank to stem off a scout as those two kinda don't go hand in hand.
Dancer could also stem from thief, being a dual dagger class is fitting for a Dancer and their movements are typically as fluid as the battle scene shown. If Dancer takes a Support Healer role, Mostly buffs with a few healing moves we could see that as a possibility as much as a Tank. Though I believe we're just going to get one new Class and Job for the next few classes introduced. Its easier to add one and one, then one in the future, than adding two for one right in the begining
I agree with the Thief being the Class and Ninja being a Job since its sort of inconic relationship. I don't see them reassigning the Daggers to Thief, instead Thief will get their own set of Daggers and there could be a shared set between the two. Steal/Mug really wouldn't fit well. It can make or break the class balance wise. If allowed to steal extra items, then they'd be more perferred for battle farming against some creatures, gil included with the idea. If that's it and its next to useless against bosses, then it'll be a highly complained about skill. The balance issue is the added item to your inventory on top of the kill item. This creates an added influx with those items and the Economy is bad enough as is, imagine a Bot getting this skill. As for Stealth, its almost guaranteed they'll be utilizing stealth as they'd be a Stealthy Scout class. I can see them having the same/similar stealth ability as the DoL classes, though it would most likely end when hit or when attacking so its a one shot kinda deal with it and could be used with traditional attacks like Back Stab.
I don't remember seeing anything about this. There was never any priority given to various job types after Arcanist was made. That was the only time I've seen the word Priority appear when Yoshi was talking about adding new classes. Musketeer may not be the first new class to be added. It could be second, or included along side another class. If you can link that interview, I'd love to read it over.
Only BLM use Staves. WHM's weapons aren't staves.
Some correcting/expanding:
(91)Gladiators/Paladin: Daggers, basic Swords, Broad Swords, Scimitars
(110)Conjurer/White Mage: Radical, Crook, Cane, Rod, Wand (Crooks and Canes aren't staves)
(100)Thaumaturge/Black Mage: Scepter, Brand, Staff, Cudgle
(82)Pugilist/Monk: Cesti, Knuckles, Claws, Katars
(83)Maurauder/Warrior: Bardiche, Bill, Battle Axe, Axe (Ironically, two Warrior weapons are really classified as spears/Polearms)
(83)Lancer/Dragoon: Spear, Trident, Guisarme, Harpoon
(82)Archer/Bard: Short Bow, Bow, Long Bow, Composite Bow
(100)Arcanist/Summoner/Scholar: Book, Grimoire, Picatrix, Tomes
Rough view on what currently is allowed to be equiped to each class and job. BLM has 1 Rod set so I did not count it in with the general list but its still part of the overall count which is in the ( ).
Well, Ninja has never been a class without a prerequisite. A thing to remember, "Class" system does not exist outside of MMOs. All Final Fantasies refered to their classes as Jobs. Tactics all use Job systems. Even the originals called the Classes, Jobs. So no, Thief has never been a class, but it has always been a requirement to unlocking the Ninja Job. If Thief doesn't become the name of the Class, then there is a chance that we'll never see Thief as an actual role in 14. With only 5 Skills to utilize, a Thief would suck as a Job. It would have nothing to really build on and you'd have to try and force some sort of iconic status onto it with useless skills such as Steal/Mug, or you won't be able to get the whole picture in one setting. A majority of what the Thief should have would pass from the beginning Class so without that Class, that thief wouldn't even be able to do the most basic actions. Ninja isn't held back by this as their Job can deal with shortening out the beginning skills. A defensive skill, one or 2 evasion skills, and two or three main DPS skills is perfect so long as one is a throwing skill and one a trap like skill/Land targeting.
Still, no Thief has never been a class. Classes do not exist outside of the two MMOs. They are all jobs outside and even still Thief is a requirement to becoming a Ninja or Ninja and Thief always shared the same outlining role so that Ninja was always surperior to Thief. Thief has the best chance of being the base class and has no reason it should not to be. The whining about it losing its iconic status is so pathetic. The Class makes the Job.
/was locked out cause I amassed 20 posts XD
Gladiator, was never a FF class/job before FFXIV.
Marauder, was never a FF class/job before FFXIV.
Pugalist, was never a FF class/job before FFXIV.
Archer, was never a...
I think you get the gist of what I'm trying to say here.
Thief, WAS a FF class/job before FFXIV. To suggest that it would be the class is to completely ignore the naming conventions seen in this very game. It's to completely ignore that every single class in this game turns into a job that has a name of a classic final fantasy job class with matching artifact armor. To suggest it would be the class is to ignore everything this series and this very game has every taught us about the job system. It is to ignore all the standards and practices seen. Why people think a Final Fantasy classic job will be demoted to a class is beyond me. The only game I'm aware of where thief turned into ninja was the very first one. So many features of that game no longer exist in the series that this point doesn't even matter.
