What vanity will your tank use?

I hope they just release loads of crafting gear people can make. It would make at least most of the crafts useful. People will buy it (if there is enough choice and not one vanya robe every single caster wears).

I do hope they restrict enough. I don't want to see PLD's or whatnot clowning around in snowwhatever outfits. xD

It's not hating fun. It's wanting there to be a certain minimum level of realism.

The most common conflict with realism is the fantasy powers of a setting (e.g. magic) but that simply requires buying in to an additional set of natural laws (it's like adding a 5th [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fundamental_interaction]fundamental force of the universe[/quote]): as long as those rules for that new force are constant or, at the very least, deviations are explained, realism is preserved because realism is more about constancy than than it is about being identical (especially since most people know about things like magnetism but have no clue how the hell it works so it might as well be magic).

The conflict you're describing is the sacrifice of realism for the aesthetic. There is already some compromise for aesthetics insofar as most of the weapons and armor used in game are completely and totally unrealistic and would, in fact, end up hurting you more than helping you. However, these compromises still preserve the logical underpinnings of weapons and armor because they keep certain aspects constant: cloth provides less protection than leather which provides less protection than scale which provides less protection than plate (the other major compromise is the ability to not show helmets/head gear which is actually more due to the need for there to be some kind of emotional connection with our characters which is much harder when you can't see their face and, ergo, relative uniqueness), and axes are slower than swords which are slower than daggers. Allowing for cross-category vanity replacements casts the logical underpinnings of the gear out of the window because there's no possible way to adequately explain how a bikini protects someone as well as a set of full plate armor without just *completely* handwaving it. In doing so, an pretense of realism is shattered because you're outright breaking a set of laws that people are already intimately familiar with (as opposed to simply bending them with the absurd equipment characters use or adding a new set by adding magic).

We're all paying the same price to play the game. If people want to tank in bikinis, let them. It's no more unrealistic than plate armor protecting you from fireballs.

The devs already control how characters look and behave so that it conforms to their own view of what the game should look like.You can't tank with a board with a nail in it, summon a moogle to do your fighting for you, or pick up a lalafell and beat someone to death with it. There are minimum and maximum heights for all of the races and restrictions on other aspects of character creation as well. Instituting limitations on the vanity system is no different than controlling any other aesthetic aspect of the game, and it's the devs' responsibility to make sure that the game world (including the players) stays within the bounds of what they imagine the world to be, which, given all of the lore based stuff that the devs have come up with, is probably pretty well defined in their minds.

As you apparently missed in the very post you quoted, realism isn't a binary attribute of a game. It exists on a sliding scale with relative limitations as to what is plausible within the game world itself. Fantasy is, by it's very definition, fantastic, but there's a difference between a wizard hurling fireballs and a bikini-babe fighting a dragon with pompoms.

As to high fantasy game meaning that people do battle in bikinis all the time, I'd be curious where in Tolkien to see anyone fighting in a bikini, since Tolkien is pretty much the archetype of the entire high fantasy genre. I'd actually challenge you to find *any* high fantasy setting where people do battle in bikinis that *isn't* a poorly written comedy (there aren't any games in the FF series that qualify as a comedy; it's a dramatic series). In high fantasy, people do battle in outlandish plate armor, complexly embroidered robes with massive sleeves and billowing cloaks, and skin-tight leather armor. They most definitely don't do battle in bikinis because that just crosses the line into *absolute* absurdity.

As long as bikini tanks are wiping its perfectly realistic.

But I'm not sure why we need long posts to tell us that.

They've said ages ago that seasonal gear will most likely not be used for glamour. Bikinis (sadly) are seasonal gear.

However we'll find out more in a couple weeks. I don't care what others wear.... I want Battlemage set for SMN/SCH and I love how my WAR looks. Though I might use the cactuar earrings instead of Allagan earrings that I have.

Since I can't edit from my phone: Thinking Coliseum chest with allagan fending pants if I do any glamour in WAR. Fabulous!

I don't have a problem with people wearing bikinis or even with them wearing them in combat. I have a problem with people wearing bikinis in combat and having those bikinis provide the same stats and protection as a suit of plate armor.

I have half a mind to throw on the darkhold armor set, black bikini, and thug helm to highlight the masochistic tendency we know all tanks have. Then my other half asks me how I'd explain myself if anyone I know saw me in it...

Otherwise, I am probably inclined to go with a bandana, camise, kecks, and a weathered axe for that 1.0 feel.

My starter armor. Unlike most things, it actually looks good on a hyur midlander male.

The problem with this is that... it's the vanity system as a whole. In fact, it doesn't even make sense in the actual game - for example, Warrior's Jackboots have more Defense than Steel Scale Greaves, which makes... no sense at all. On top of that, I doubt the vanity system is so limited that I can't augment my Subligar on my WAR which is just as bad as wearing a bikini.

Oh yeah, those leves that you do, where you have to use the item to dispel the mobs 'glamour' to reveal what it really looks like. So basically a 'glamour' actually exists within the laws of the game, and supposedly makes one thing look like another.

All this logic, no wall of text. Bikini tanks will be the bomb. Bikini war w/ titan axe? sufficient ridiculousness to make me happy :) thats my chosen set, anyways.

Soot Black Direwolf for both jobs, it's got the bulk of Darklight without the retarded fins, and the DL DRG helm is sweet too.

So far I like the regular "Mythril" gear you get at around 40-ish. Undyed, it has the most classic "Knight in Shining Armor" look of any of the sets, in my mind.

I've been trying to decide... My current favorite is a Snow White set of Horn Scale Boots/Chest, with a Cobalt Barbut dyed opo-opo brown, hempen leggings died Snow White, and Horn Fingers dyed opo-opo brown. I really don't like the bulky plate looks available. I'm still messing with the set. I also considered a soot-black set of Mythril with the Cobalt Barbut dyed black as well.

I have been using the Steel Longsword and Cobalt Bladed Lantern Shield so far for weapons.... I am still trying to innovate with my ARM, though - just kinda going through the crafting log making random crap until I find something I like.

It does look cool but the more I look at it the more I realize it was almost exclusively made for male avatars. The female version was shoe-horned in afterwards. Also the glamor system does not seem to be set up to support Odin armor at all. I am a tad pissed.

Ill be keeping my full allagan look on whatever pieces are bis, and keep whatever allagan 2 pieces that drop normally in 6-9. I really like the look of allagan plate.

I actually really like the look of Heavy Allagan as well, I just wish you could color/highlight them to take away from the stale colors.

I never understood why there is such an extensive system for dying armor which doesn't work on a majority of armor in this game.
