Actually the PS4 doesn't use DirectX because well the rights belong to Microsoft. So they are using OpenGL instead.
It was only speculated up until launch that they'll use DirectX.

Alright, playin your game.

Difference is SweetFX.
If you want reduction in jaggies you need a PC simple as that. The only that works here with all these low res transparencies is supersampling imo. It looks pretty damn sweet on 4x SGSSAA but runs badly as well. 2x is okay..... literally light years ahead of anything the PS3 is capable of doing with anti-aliasing. I feel so bad for PS3 gamers. This games looks like so much ass on that console. PS4 I hope is going to use Sony's new TSSAA or whatever it is they are using in KZ. I bet Square goes FXAA only though.
Shadow LODs in this game are just bad. Takes me out everytime I see them flickering so madly in Gridania. Putting cascading down to normal gets the horrid ones but introduces the terrible cascading on normal lol. I use 2xSGSSAA as that is what I can use for 40-60FPS 55 average on my OC'd 770. The transparencies in this game are very low resolution and emit tons of jaggies that can only really be solved with a few options.
This game still needs some optimization and that is dead clear. HDR in this game basically does nothing from what I can tell. I've looked and looked for what it does. It does nothing but add frames and maybe less compression I have no idea. Be nice to actually see this setting do something.
All I really want though is LODs and shadows to be fixed as well the refinements that come with DX11. It seems that stuff should look better next round but at what cost? I really hope dx11 runs well because any more drops in FPS and I will have to start knocking something down.
Would they have to edit each texture file in order to upgrade the quality and how long would that take? And if so should this even be a top priority graphic design team?
They would have to essentially redo each file. You can downscale textures, but you can't upscale them - it will only yield a softer image when mapped. Unless they have some special program to do this for them, it would take a lot of development time. So while I don't plan on getting high resolution textures anytime soon, I wouldn't be surprised to hear they're looking into ways to make some textures look less pixelated.
They likely have high-res textures that they downscaled during the optimization process. Many texture artists I know start pretty big, and slowly reduce file-sizes and texture sizes until they hit a sweet spot of looks and desired optimization. I just hope that S-E kept a few of their larger versions around.
they would have to re-make all textures, into higher res. that would take a lot of time. which is why they won't do it.
I think they should have made high-res/poly textures/models, to begin with, and downsize them for PS3/current PC, and implement the high-res, with DX11. That way they could upgrade the graphics, in the game, with each new-gen PCs.
Isn't that what they presumably are doing with FFV? With a future U-HD PC version in mind, or such.
But i agree, dat grass!
what are you talking about? this isn't Starcraft or something, you're supposed to be able to zoom in on your char, and see details, otherwise there would be no point in adding details. they might as well just have made it look like FF7, to save even more resources.
It doesn't take longer to make a 4k pixel texture, than a 100pixel texture, so there's no reason to not make it high res, to begin with.
If people want/can play with 4k textures, then why wouldn't they be able to?
I got 30+ FPS, on max settings, even at Odin, so there's plenty of room for higher res textures.
They just gonna change lightning and the like, like its supposed to.
Don't think they got the money to redo the whole texturing on pc, given you can add in tesselation with DX11 ...
Play The Secret World if you want awesome mmo graphics, is all :p
Add better anti aliasing, add hdr, add bloom, stuff like that
Sadly, I called this when that interview had come out. Surprised people still thought they would be implementing high res textures. I remember in the past, Beta forums I think, they had mentioned that some of the textures were getting a boost. The interview left me a little sad. I guess I will sit back with my popcorn when DX11 is released and people are in an outrage over the textures.
Unless they deleted all the original assets, that shouldn't be the case. They've been scaled down for the sake of better resolution. And that should be the same for the newer pieces in order to keep them looking as crisp as they are.
Now, remapping them, that could be an issue which might take a while as it tends to bring up a lot of unwanted and unexpected results.
The graphics in this game is an insult to my computer.
The graphics in this game are gorgeous if you have the hardware to run it.
Are you really playing with camera zoomed in so much that you can see the low res?
Myself I only zoom in if I want to check out the looks of my gear. For actually playing I have camera zoomed out as much as possible, so I can see what actually happens in a larger area around my character.
This is kind of BS. Its 2014, and we are in the era of crowd-sourcing. Allow the players/modders to develop high res textures and bottleneck the submissions through a temporary team at square-enix. Give the contributors some sort of unique in-game reward. I bet we'd have hi-res textures in less than a week.
I'm still waiting for this...

Overall I would just like to see shadows massively improved along with lighting, specifically tree shadows and how shadows jerk across the floor and walls as the day passes.
I want the game to look like that ^
I see no problems with textures, I would really have to nitpick with some lenses to find anything wrong with it, as a matter of fact my game looks better than any of the pics posted here.
I have no idea why, but I have spent a lot of time fiddling with settings, all i can say and also sweetfx .
They are only Funcom MMOS that ever looked great. I mean, heavy textures come with a price, which is storage space. Since PS3 support is still around and no dedicated pc engine, you won't have these superb high textures anytime soon.
They did it for FF XIV 1st Edition.
And it failed pretty badly.
Other than that whats the deal with low res textures anyway, lightning effects is the important thing here. We re in 2014 and Pixel Art games are also still a BIG deal. Not everything have to be top notch on the pure technic side.
It's an aesthetic clash. Pixel art games don't need to look particularly good because they can more easily pass as a 'art design choice', which they often are. ARR goes for a realistic look, though, and that's why pixelated textures are a bad idea: they clash with all the other aethetic choices. If you go look at a wall in Ul'dah or at your character's face, you don't really notice the pixels the same way you do with armor. Maybe if you zoom real close to your face you'll notice the pixelation, but for your armor? Go put on a dalmatica or a cowl and look at the pattern. Or with the Darklight cowls, too. If you don't notice the pixelation with those, then you probably will never see any pixelation ever.
If you want to notice the difference, you could go look at Minecraft texture packs. Find one that is 16x16, and then find one that is 64x64. Tell me you don't notice the difference. You don't even need the game, since texture packs often come with screenshots.
Also, they could give high resolution texture support for the PC and the PS4, even if they can't do that with the PS3 because of its limitation. There's nothing stopping them from doing that.
No, it's a concept art shot of what they wanted 2.0 to look like.
Aw, well we can always hope it becomes that eventually. They can always upgrade it bit by bit, adding Dx11 is a start.
SweetFX can enhance the overall display , making the game sharper and more colorful
but i have to agree with everyone the textures are so low res i can't take close-up screenshots of the models
That is one of the early Concept-Screenshots from ARR, while 1.0 was still running. So no, it is not what 1.0 did look like, it is what ARR looked like at a certain time under development, since it is an actual screenshot and was confirmed to be not rendered or anything.
