I would imagine they would give a free copy of the PS4 copy if they drop it.
Or...they will get mobbed even in Japan.

Nice I give money, they cut service for what was promised years ago. Why even bother?
I'm glad to know they're already planning on dropping PS3 support, even if it is in the distant future. The limitations it imposes really show.
Good. With this we have a chance to see some content that's not hold back because it has to run on almost 10years old technology.
Glad they won't allow the game to gimp along dragging oudated ps3 technology behind it like they did with ffxi and ps2 for the longest time.
Air Battles confirmed ^^Quote:
For example, if we were to have a large-scale FATE where players can ride on a flying mount and freely fly around and swoop down at a dragon that is 200 meters long, players would probably be impressed and entertained. However, it would also require us to raise the minimum requirement when it comes to hardware specs.
If enough PS3 players switch to PS4
You can switch from PS3 version to PS4 version for free (with losing the PS3 version)
This is actually not true. They dropped US PS2 support - but they did NOT drop EU and JP PS2 support. This meant that the game was still being held back by PS2 technology.
So, essentially, they made a decision that pissed off all the PC Master Race folks who wanted the game to upgrade to suit new hardware, and it pissed off all the US PS2 players who now could not access the expansion.
I do not expect FFXIV to ever drop PS3 completely - though the "free upgrade to PS4" offer might indicate that they actually learned from the mistake on FFXI and are actually considering dropping PS3 (and not just giving the idea lip service to keep customers that might otherwise jump ship).
MIGHT.
I am definitely certain they will drop PS3 support. It's not a matter of "if", it's a matter of "when."
What I feel they will do is take a look at the PS3 version of the game, then take a look at the number of primarily PS3 subscriptions after the 3.0 expansion. If the number still favors a majority of PS3 users, they will support it another 6 or so months, then check the number again. The process will repeat as long as needed until the number favors PS4/PC players. As soon as the number favors PS4/PC, they will set a hard date to when they will stop support for the PS3, but will also offer incentives to jump ship and play on PS4 or PC instead for those who are still being stubborn.
The PS3 is impressive for what it can do with a 256 MB GPU, but it's an antiquated system in comparison with the PS4 or any general mid-range priced PC. It will hold the game back far worse than the PS2 holding FFXI back (FFXI was designed for the PS2 originally; the problems stem from maximum allotted harddrive space, which SE had to petition to Sony to increase every single time). I think a lot of PS3 players who have PS4 will see this in a few hours. The jump from PS3 to PS4 is pretty massive.
Sony have stated that in order to play online games on PS4 you will have to subscribe to PS+ Maybe not for FFXIV or other monthly sub MMO's but everything else you will have to pay for.
Lets face it, if you buy a PS4 you're not going to use just for FFXIV are you? So you'll end up subbing for PS+ anyway to play your other games online.
Pretty sure based on this, Sony will be pushing support to end on PS3, and everyone migrate to PS4 so they can cash in. The claim Sony don't want to milk you for your cash like Microsoft is quite laughable, Playstation Home anyone?
Why are people still saying this? It's not hard to understand, at all, how can so many still say this... ok, pay attention for the 500th time people, FFXI HAS NOT DROPPED PS2 SUPPORT, they simply did not release the expansion outside of Japan and Asia for the PS2. THE PS2 IS STILL SUPPORTED ON FFXI!!!
FFXI needed to drop PS2 support years ago, but it has never done so because (supposedly) the PS2 is used to play the game throughout Asia, even in Japan itself... Since the costs would drastically exceed the profit of releasing the last expansion on the PS2 outside of Asia/Japan, they decided to not release it in these territories. However, since it is STILL on the PS2 in other countries, that means that support is NOT dropped.
And do you know the reason why a price drop will happen in the first place? It's because they made a return on investment of making the machines due to them selling well. That allows them to research and develop ways to make cheaper parts and re-release a cheaper PS4. That's the basics of how it works in the console industry for systems (or games) that sell well.
People are willing to spend $300 if not more for a system. In fact, the PS4 selling well in both the US and Japan in the opening week should be a testament to that.
Think deeper on why things are going the way it is for FFXIV right now. The top execs at SE made a very smart business play for the game. They played to the Western gaming sentiments as well as the Japanese gaming sentiments. They knew that MMO PC gaming was premier for US players as well as European players, so they didn't market the PS3 version as hard. They re-released FFXIV with the promise that it would be on the PS3, not to market to PS3 players, but to market to console gamers themselves. It's like a fail safe with in release, they targeted console players, building off of the success of FFXI, which was a hit on console too. They knew PS4 was going to be a hit in the US (and around the world), which is why they made sure FFXIV was accessible day 1 to JP PS4, so that their own home of already majority console players can have something to enjoy on their new shiny PS4 they just purchased today (or yesterday, or tomorrow).
They probably knew the longevity of the PS3 system for the game was limited, but instead went about it so they could appear benevolent in trying to have as many players enjoy the content as possible. This allows them to safely drop support on an aged console in the future and further support their new growing game without any set backs.
^^fixed it for you
I'm not purchasing a PS4 at the moment because I have enough of a backlog of great PS3 games to play through.
As soon as PS4 has a line-up of games that appeal to me (as opposed to a few individual titles), I'll pull the trigger and purchase one.
Theres also the simple observation that the expansion seems to be a good time away estimated time being 2015ish possibly even 2016(doubt it but who knows?). Its not like they are gonna go 'whoops! expansions out! Time to drop PS3!' There will still be some time after that giving people a fair warning (probably even an event/patch along with it with more content i presume), and like he said in said interview by then most will have moved on seeing as though by then all the next gen consoles will have more appealing choices for games and those who had the PS3 version can still swap to PS4 for free.
So yes unfortunate it wont last forever but now you can use this time to start planning for the inevitable....which once again is a decent amount of time away since we dont even know how long after the expansion they plan on dropping it. It could be another year or so added on to that if sales go good with PS3 versions.
TLDR - You are freaking out over something that has not even been confirmed to happen for another 2-3+ years. PS3 are gonna be out of date by then anyway. Chill lol.
The ps3 is out of date... I'm surprised they didn't release this on the ps4 anyways...
