You have a good point but considering it's the mass market here that they're targeting how long can it be expected to hold a large subscription base, or even generate new sales I wonder.

i wouldn't be surprised having dual console releases with teso makes me think the same now whats a console release without micro transactions/cash shop although with ffxiv there not much you can't blast through in a few weeks of solid gaming
I couldn't agree more on the rationale, but couldn't disagree more on the execution.
FFX-2, FFXIII, FFXIII-2 and now FFXIII - LR are horrible games. They completely broke away from FF tradition. FFXII's major sin was turning Avatars such as Odin and Alexander into lame airships. Where is the "Fantasy in that?" But FF12 was still much better than anything after it.
Square soft spent 2 decades building up a fan base and then completely alienated them. We were all 6-10 years old when we started playing Final Fantasy titles. Today we are part of the demographic with disposable income and looking to be entertained more than any previous generation.
Hollywood got it right. Its been nothing but Blockboster Marvel/DC superhero movies for the past 15 years. Avengers anyone?
That demographic is MALE, in mid 20's to early 30's.
SE needs to quit making content exclusively for 15-25 Year Old ADD girls.
EDIT: Before any quotes XIII sales vs FFVII, please remember to look at what % of global sales FFVII represented vs XIII.
The game market has grown exponentially over the past decade. I think it was proven that XIII would have had to done 6x as well sales wise to equal the success of FFVII.
if they are separating consoles as well ( of which i think will be highly likely sony and microsoft rarely play nice with each other) then there losing my money.. might test it out on the mac at release and pray ffxiv gives me something worth while .. might seem a bit stupid but i would have kinda welcomed the split with this game being the obvious differences between the 2 systems might have made it a little nicer i do feel they lose so much with the ps3 version
I feel its too early for me to judge the game. It has too many half open concepts and unfinished ideas... (IE: CT is only the entrance, not even the tower. Not all the zones are open, so who knows what will be there, the level cap still needs to be raised and who knows maybe it's easy to 50 and it will be harder after this? And well still need BLOODY MUSKETEER, LIKE PROMISED! *sigh*)
I will agree OP, it seems like every time something seems a bit challenging SE seems to nerf it and make it easier. Like Moogle... I can only speak for myself and all the people I know... but I didn't know anyone who had an issue with that fight once they got it down. Personally I didn't see where it needed to be nerfed, but SE will do what SE will do.
But in all honesty I've never played a MMO where I was totally blown away with it from day one, so I am giving it til the first major expansion unless they really do something to mess it up bad. Even though I love a game that is hard and takes time, and gives me a bit of challenge... it seems that I just have to accept that more people are casual and therefore want casual games. Can't say I agree 100% with the way MMOs seem to be going, but then again I am one person.
But what it comes down to: We are all people with free will. If players don't like the game they are free to move on to something else. If players like it well then, no issue. SE isn't forcing us to stay, but I have been a Final Fantasy fan for a long time, so (just like playing 1.0 from start) I'm willing to give them time to show me what they can do with this "Reborn" game.
You said it yourself, you can't compare the sales, in number of sells or in % of global sales, times are differents.
Strangely i didn't like FFXII and liked FFX-2 and the FXIIIs games. That's not because you don't like them that they are terrible ( btw all or most of FF titles, new and olds, are not so good, but nostalgia googles help a lot )
That is really a double edged sword, it because of gamers that content is released like that and those same gamers beat the content and then complain about it. Are they the type that beat a game and then replays it or do they beat the game and never play it again? If the second a MMO especially a newer one is not for them.
There was nothing odd about this. The Ivalice titles always had a round-about way of incorporating those types of elements into Final Fantasy, as they have always had their own Avatars to draw from (of which there are plenty to summon and use in-game.) Since Ivalice is a long-running world, it would be pretty hard to incorporate Bahamut/Odin/Alexander into a persistent history as they were in the other FF titles.
The real problem with modern Final Fantasy is that it no longer has a realistic view of its own scale. It seems like the higher-ups of Square Enix want Final Fantasy to be this super dramatic, highly emotionally drawing tale, so all of their focus is on trying to be super popular.
The older games just had naturally compelling stories that never tried to be anything other than a good story. Most importantly, gameplay always came first, and was ultimately used to progress the story MORESO than the storyline itself (coughFFXIIIcough).
This is what happened to Final Fantasy 7, a game with an absolutely amazing script that's been fanserviced and plagued with melodrama (that never existed in the original game) since Square realized they could make tons of money as long as they give Cloud a face in CG and make all the characters sulk around.
I don't see the allure of staying one level for 7 years and swapping between 8 different gearsets.
The game needs some meaningful long-term goals (and no, FC Housing doesn't count)
The problem is that nearly all rewards in this game are merely a stepping stone for the next level of rewards - a tragic side-effect of the un-inspired 'linear gear-progression model'
Solution idea:
- Raise the class level cap to 60 over the next 3 patches. Announce that the cap will not increase again until after 2016.
- introduce cap-unlocking quests for class levels 50 and 55. (eg FFXI 'Genkai quests')
- re-define current Lvl gear to actual Lvl [Lvl50:iLvl150] = Lvl51 | I'd prefer something like 'star levels' to differentiate future gear power of the same lvl: ie. lvl50☆☆☆, lvl53☆, lvl60☆☆, etc..
- Introduce branching horizontal gear progression beginning at Lvl 55 - give players new types of gear to experiment with and debate over.
- Introduce new Lvl55+ materia/gear/recipes/food that boosts the effects of traits and abilities at the expense of a % of raw power.
And finally:
- Introduce ultra rare RNG drops from dungeons/FATES/etc of lvl55~60 gear each with unique attributes that cannot be obtained in any other way. (these don't have to be the most powerful, but they should be useful and interesting prestige items) - These would be U/U
- Put in place a super powerful lvl60 weapon/gear quest that takes a minimum of 6 months to complete for the most dedicated of hardcores - and an average of 18-20 months to complete for mid-core players. - Most of it should either be soloable or should piggyback on other content, but it should require expertise and dedication in all aspects of ARR gameplay (ie. a rare item from each of the game's dungeons, FATEs, primals, raids, etc. ultra-rare gathering items, and hard-to-make crafted items, drops from treasure hunts, Beastmen quest items, special Guildleve rewards, 100k GC item, etc, etc, etc.. -- Have it all culminate in an epic battle vs a new boss that must be solo'd [eg Maat] to complete.)
How can you not be excited for Primal Ultra Difficulty Edition?!
Yeah I want to see more horizontal progression of the same ilvl variety. Gear treadmills get old after awhile because it takes away purpose from what you do. As in, I don't want to spend 3 months getting full ilvl 90 gear, and then have ilvl 100 come out as soon as I do. And then when I'm full 100, 120 comes out. And then 140.
That kind of progression is what turned WoW into a borefest. I'd much rather have FF11 style where they introduce gear sets of similar strength, but vastly different stats and builds. Haste builds, Double Attack builds, Critical Hit builds, Parry Builds, etc. New classes are great too! Just loathe gear treadmills. (Level cap raises are fine .... )
I'm giving it to the first expansion. There are a lot of things about this game I don't like, mostly fail economy, The way gear stats work, and no skill trees/ specialization options.
However, I played XI for years and want this game to succeed. I still have a lot of fun playing it. 2.1 was a vast improvement over 2.0. I'm definetly sticking around for more than a patch or two after supporting the game all through 1.0 ( which I actually enjoyed around 1.2+)
I am excited for 2.2, as I still feel like this game has a lot of potential.
I played and loved XI for a long time, but there is no way I could play a game like that anymore. Unless you had 4-5 hours to sit and play you couldn't get much done. There was 0 casual aspect to it. However there are many things XIV could benefit from taking from XI. There is definitly a middle ground between the 2, a game doesn't need to be extreamely easy (XIV) or mind-numbingly grindy (XI). NMs, BCNMs, to get rare drops were great time sinks for hardcore players, there is none of that for the hardcore. The absense of an economy also makes things very stale end-game. There is nothing extreamely difficult for the hardcore to strive for. It seems as though SE wants to avoid that because it will deter the casual player. I am a casual player and it is not going to upset me one bit that the hardcore player has better equipment then me, they should. I love that I can get great gear by casual means, but it is retarded that I can get the best gear that way. I can get a i90 body piece in a few weeks and there is nothing better then that? Come on .
RNG drops like that would simply promote more RMT monopoly. They have to be far from the most powerful. Whatever unique attributes that it might have cannot be even on-par to what would otherwise be considered best/near-best.
The concept of something taking 6months for hardcore sounds nice... at first. But seriously, your peers will not tolerate that long of a wait for something, regardless of it being the best equip or not for a year or two. When you dangle something like that in front of the majority playerbase, you're just shortening their patience exponentially. Seriously, look at the FC housing situation. It's intended to be something to last for the entire foreseeable life of the game, yet people can't accept the fact that it's not something they can get within a month or so.
Yes well, Gear Treadmills work better in games where you can only have 1 class.
Much rather see them add new classes rather than vastly improved gear tiers. Absolutely want new and more difficult encounters, but I prefer them tuned to your player skill rather than your item level. Like Titan Extreme was released with players already being full 90, and it's still an appropriately challenging fight. Not that we don't one-shot it plenty, but it demonstrates how newer fights that release the same level of gear can be just as good as releasing higher level gear that helps you out-gear old content.
Impossible to monopolize if the items are U/U. Are RMT monopolizing Odin mantles and Behemoth horns? It's effectively the same thing.
Also, the FATEs which drop these sort of items should randomly appear in different zones (ie. Odin) and the Bosses that drop the items should be a ultra-rare RNG spawned chest or drop (ie. 4th CT chest, Ifrit Horn, etc)
Basically use the same systems we have in place now for mere novelty stuff and introduce items and gear that has usefulness proportional to the rarity or difficulty in obtaining the item
The FC issue is largely due to the expectations of the players based on previous claims by the Developers ("You can buy a house if you save all your gil gathered from lvl 1-50"). Housing is also generally expected to be a novelty feature that is widely accessible in modern MMOs - FC housing was not.
If players understood at the start that these new 'Ultimate gear quests' would be very long term but that the rewards are proportional, they will work towards it - or give up even trying (which is good) But the quest needs to be difficult, tedious (RNG), and time consuming enough that very, very few hardcores will obtain it in the minimum time.
Use the FFXI (pre-Abyssea) relic weapon quests as a guidelines: Owning a Relic then was a true rarity. Thus it was never required for content as it was an unrealistic goal for 98% of players. -- This had a great side-effect on the game culture where Players without a relic couldn't brag much about their gear, whereas most players who owned them were dedicated and focused hard-working types who typically didn't brag at all.
It's about managing player expectations, and having the rewards meet the amount of work to gain them. <-- This was something that the FC housing launch failed at miserably.
Are you trying to convince me or yourself? 5 months is the time it took for Swtor to go F2p
You obviiously didn't play the beta if you think Eso isn't offering anything. The game has its flaw (no weight behind melee combat, 1h + shield being flat out useless compared to other weapons type and weapn skills being subpar compared to class skill) but it also have much to offer. Eso and Gw2 are the only 2 mmo out there who's actually taking risk and try new things with their game design instead of copy pasting everything and taking the safe route. the game also won't be held back by a toaster also known as ps3Quote:
If you play the ESO beta you'll quickly change your mind about that.
Complete Hypocrites here
Eso is 4months before release and not even in open beta but its ok to judge it!
But its still too early to judge ffxiv ! even though its now 5 months from official release but lets give it a year more!
FFxiv 4 months before release was a terrible game(especially for casters) . So i don't think you can judge a mmo that is based on exploring (teso) from its stress test hehe.
Anyway I beaten Twintania 13 times and every week i have just been logging one day to do coil. Capping myth after that feels like a complete chore, that i have force myself to do. Or i just watch videos while i heal dungeons >_>.
Worst thing is people keep leaving from my fc which has disbanded now i just have my linkshell of 9 people which i 1/1 coil with :P.
I freaking love skyrim. But eso didnt give me the same feelings. Its an mmo so freedom is restricted . However when you look at what else is on the market mmo wise. Theres not much thats better.
I am thinking ill try eso for one month at least for the new mmo experience. The graphics and design of the world is amazing (compared to ffxiv). There is also the modding aspect of teso that ffxiv lacks. I am not sure how much users will be able to mod but that will be a could be a source of endless entertainment.
I'm no quite ready to judge yet since the game still needs to introduce 2nd Jobs for current classes and each major update does add more to the main storyline.
I'll wait until 2.4 or 2.5 to make my judgement because by then we will have Crystal Tower and maybe Coil Turn 11 to 15. Not to mentioned more of the Main Story would be released since each Major Update adds more to the Main Storyline and 1 new Dungeon with 2 Hard Mode Dungeons per Major Update.

Dark Souls by From Software, the 'Soul Series' starts with Demon Souls exclusive to PS3, but have migrated to PC, and Xbox
Basically they're hardcore A-RPGs, they have very dark fantasy themes, rich and deep lore that you have to explore to find, very deep combat mechanics with near endless possibilites to builds, if you wanna beat the game at Soul Level 1 dual wielding shields, go do it, armour and weapons aren't as important as planning, patience and skill, and being able to learn from your mistakes/
There's soo many secrets, the games been out for years but the community still learns things about it, it is a deeply punishing game, that won't hesitate for a second to murder you steal your souls (experience and currency basically) and humanity (another form of currency) but it is deeply fair, and not once did I feel like it was a cheap game. There's usual small hints beforetraps, that are super subtle you must be observant and an explorer.
There were 2 amaaaazing maps in the game completely hidden, without an amazing sense of curiosity and exploration and observation, or a guide... you'd never find them.
Everything in the game was viable, if you wanna beat the game dressed up in dark robes and a scythe to look like Death, go get them, if you want to beat the game in your starting gear, enjoy.
As welll as the most innovative and amazing online features ever, you can see other peoples ghosts in realtime as they play the game (but can't interact with them) to let you know the game isn't so empty and others are suffering with you, you can leave messages warning others of traps, or tricking them to their doom, once you die your bloodstain is seen in others worlds and people can walk to it and watch how your ghost died, hopefully to plan ahead, there's also summons and invaders, if you see a white sign when you're alive, you can use it to summon another human player to help you, no voice chat, no messaging just a player sent to help you. Then there are invaders, which are other players that can forcefully invade your game to kill you if you're alive to steal your souls and humanity (part of the lore as well), not to mention covenants.
Coveneants are essentially factions of NPCs you can join, with different purposes, say the Darkwraiths devote themselves to invading other players, the Darkmoons on the other hands are the cops of the world, they invade 'sinners' (invaders), there's also Forest Hunters, who are summoned to the Darkroot Forest to protect it from tresspassers, and Gravelords who infect your game and make it tougher, and the only way to cure it is if you find them and kill them.
Indeed but that's some gamers problem they play way to much {have no life} not to be rude but for some it's a fact so they get bored with things quit come back quit ect you can see were i'm going. But yes this games far too new to expect so much out of it hell at least give it a year or 2. And Mihael Dark Souls is not a massive online role playing game the online is slim and well you can't compare that to this
The 'Souls' games are brilliantly constructed on so many levels. Exploration, mystery, combat, gear, difficulty, danger, story, atmosphere... I really can't wait for DSII.
Monster Hunter is the other game I hold up as a model for others. It's punishingly difficult to careless players, but rewarding to those who those take the time to learn. The MH gear system is one of the best ever devised due to it's bonus/penalty system. Also, there is no character level progression in MH. Your ability to progress in the game is determined by a mixture of gear and skill.
Oddly enough, neither game allows you to talk directly to the people you play with.... I wonder if that is a coincidence.. <.<
Dark Souls is one of those games where the developers stood against the publisher and developed one of the purest most fufilling games I've ever played, you can tell they poured their (broken) hearts into the game & then some, going above and beyond, lol. & I love the anonymity of the mutiplayer, it's like Journey, lol.
I've never actually played Monster Hunter... but I want to. Tell me more about its gear system? :O
I wish there was one for PS3
Oh, I wasn't aware that the game had to be perfect 5 months after. I stated it 'released not to long ago' meaning, 'hey, it's still new!'
Since most of you played wow: that game wasn't very amazing in its first few months. Bugs, content, etc. people these days want everything, and they want it now. All I'm saying is: relax dammit. Content is coming, why're you in such a hurry?
More instances! Please look forward to it!
I played Dragon knight in betas and with my sword and shield I was facerolling everything .....
The combat is original in the MMO world and they haven't sold out to the lights and glitter Korean style of combat, infact they have taken it back in time and kept it traditional TES combat.
TES have a huge following over all platforms that will rival and surpass so many games populations, The graphics are cinematic (almost)
Rest assured when that game come out it will land in the market with some force, even for a beta it was much better than a lot I have tested.
All who say they don't like TESO also prefer Skyrim over all the others, which is where the nay-saying comes from, these people expected a multiplayer skyrim .... It is not that, it is infact something "FRESH"
Every piece of armor comes with a bonus and a penalty and neither will kick in until you reach a certain threshold. It's the ultimate horizontal gear progression system.
Here is some example gear to demonstrate (simplified and in FFXIV-ish terms)
- 'Body X': +2 Melee Attack, +4 Defense, -5 Attack Speed, -3 Accuracy, -6 Ice resist
- 'Hands Y': +12 Melee Attack, -5 Defense, -4 Accuracy, -10 Ice resist
- 'Legs Z': -1 Melee Attack, +7 Defense, -5 Attack Speed, +9 Food Potency
- 'Head X' +3 Melee Attack, +4 Defense, -2 Attack Speed, -1 Accuracy, -4 Ice resist
Totals: +16 Melee Attack, +10 Defense, -12 Attack Speed, -5 Accuracy, +9 Food Potency, Ice Resist -20
Now here is where the thresholds come into play. Each stat has a threshold at 10, 15, 20, as well as at -10, -15, -20, etc.
So the result is:
- 'Melee Attack' stat is +16, which triggers the level 2 threshold [+15]. So you gain "Powerful Attack 2" trait (+20% melee damage)
- 'Defense' stat is +10, which triggers the level 1 threshold [+10] So you gain "Iron Defense 1" trait (-10% damage taken)
- 'Attack speed' stat is -12, which triggers the level -1 threshold [-10] So you gain "Cumbersome 1" trait (-10% attack speed)
- 'Accuracy' stat is -5. This doesn't trigger any thresholds and thus has no effect on your gameplay.
- 'Food potency stat is +9. This also doesn't trigger any thresholds and will also have no effect on your gameplay.
- 'Ice Resist' stat is -20, which triggers the level -3 threshold [-20] So you gain "Hypothermia 3" trait (suffer +30% damage from Ice based attacks)
Now imagine hundreds of different kinds of armor and weapons, gems, etc to choose from with a huge variety of stats to balance out and calculate based on your own playstyle.
When I have the time, I will have to start my copy of Dark Souls: Prepare to Die edition. I just never find the time to play other games, as all my time is spent on FFXIV when I'm at home, and (recently) Bravely Default when I am travelling to and from work.
Thumbs up for Monster Hunter. It is very much like raid progressions - you needed to learn monster's attack patterns, nimbleness at dodging/blocking, etc. Clearing a G-Rank Golden Rathian or something in MH3U without so much as taking a scratch is really satisfying.
The best part about Monster Hunter (and what this game truly lacks to make its Armory system really unique), is the fact that you can have different gearsets, all with different bonuses. Monster Hunter has a myriad of stats, and mixing and matching gear to get the setup you want is one of the most fun parts of Monster Hunter. If you find you need a certain part to round off your set, but can't make it, off to the hunting fields you go. Perhaps the RNG will bless you, or it might not. But Monster Hunter is true to its title - it made you feel like an actual "monster hunter". At the higher ranks, all it takes is 3 hits before you die. True to being an actual "monster hunter", you had to know what were its weak spots, what were the best ways to fight it, be adept in multiple weapons. There is no real HP stat, HP remains the same throughout all ranks, and can only be raised by eating food prior to the fight (who fights monsters on an empty stomach?). There is also a Stamina system which limits how much you can run around, or evade/block. It really gave you this feeling that you were out there hunting big monsters for game, and that you had to be equally skilled and knowledgeable to match the monster's ferocity and strength.
time for SE to start to worry when players start talking about other games on their games forums ?
