I kind of agree, before the game is saved it needs to finish whatever battle system they want to implement(and hopefully it isnt lame), fix sp gain so there is multiple entertaining ways to level up, add new and different looking zones, finish jobs add new classes, add the missing races, some alternate forms of experience for crafters, more quests that matter, and have an interesting progression. progress the main plotline. and uhhh have some challenge mode type content, like nyzul or survival or somesuch, some epic boss fights, and interesting dungeons
at that point i think the game will be fairly marketable, and able to do well, then they just have to promote the heck out of it.
As for this patch, well.... it is the first patch with any content in a real long time, so that in and of itself should be somewhat entertaining...
Color me skeptical but still hopeful... Actually, 1.18a is where we'll likely see good things as I'm sure they won't test 1.18 and it'll be full of lovely little bugs for us to report. :D
If the patch is delayed expectations are going to rise even more because people will think they're adding something else instead of thinking it just wasent ready.
This patch is NOT and I mean will NOT live up to expectations, no matter what happens. I expect to see the very basic groundwork for the new battle system but expect it will take another 3-4 possibly even 5 more patches to flesh it all out and we haven't even began to talk about jobs.
Quest hubs could be a crap shoot, they could be awesome if theres sp on turn in, fail if they're like the quests we have now.
Not enough info really to say just how good the patch will be.
SE is way too understaffed to be impressive. Everything they give us will be under developed. You can quote me wildly on that.
SE has trouble even meeting our expectations, let alone exceeding them.
why does everyone expect alot out of this patch? because everytime we bring up we want this or that such as mail or chocobo's we get flamed talking about how 1.18 will be this godsend patch to fix everything then they can work on the BASIC items that should have been in game since day 1. it could also have alot to do with yoshi himself constantly talking about what they are working on and 1.18 in the same paragraph. i do not expect them to be in it, but whether he is trying to or not he has hyped up 1.18 to be huge.
now on to what do i expect? slower battle due to a very basic battle change involving nothing more than adding auto attack. one or 2 dungeons that take 10-15 minutes total each to complete. more mobs that drop pre-made gear that are super easy. tons of bugs that they will take weeks to fix as part of a 1.18b,c and call them patches by themselves. last thing i expect to be added an another targeting change.
mmmmmmaybe.
actually i'd have to say if he was allowed to finish the products that were being worked on the game would be in alot better shape than it is now. i mean it's not like yoshi has done anything to make the game fun up til now. if it was more people would be joining and not as many people would be putting such high hopes on a single patch. he added low level nm's that was good for the new players, but since the majority of the players in game at this point has at least one capped class they were forgotten.
Considering the bleeding, better then mister billion in debt T-san.
You want to make content the issue, but guess what, a good 70% of people quit with less the a month of playtime, The average level was around lvl 30, that's how disgusted they were.
No you wouldn't have been playing with grand companies because the servers would have been shut down.
Again for reference as of November, before T-san got his kicking. If you think it would have been any different with screw-beta-Tanaka.

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
Oh my darling failure, you're the only failure I can rely on...bleehh.
Tanaka in response to criticism: Lash out at it's fans for disrupting his vision (Twitter controversy of surplus)
Yoshi in response to criticism: Let's do a poll, and see what everyone wants~~~~~
Tanaka : Epic fail
Yoshi : slower then selling at the market ward
Which part of epic fail was there to find faith in?
i am not saying tanaka did a good job at all. you are completely taking me out of context. what i am saying is there were items that were in the works alot of people were waiting on. the grand companies, chocobo's, new classes, dungeons. these were all being worked on, but when yoshi took over they were either trashed or threw in the back burner. if those items were allowed to be finished and implemented i will honestly say i believe people would have been more relaxed on waiting on the battle updates.
in case you remember the number 1 thing people asked for in the polls was not battle overhaul. you love to throw it out as the thing people asked for first, but you are completely wrong. the first thing people asked for was content and that is what is not being delivered. i'm sorry to use facts as this hurts your argument, but your reasoning is fail.
I think the battle system changes won't be in a finalised state until winter/spring. Even if they do manage a completed system adjustments/balancing to it will take many many months to polish.
As a result I think we'll still see a lack of content until 2012 too, sure there'll be more to do but maybe not enough for the hardcorers who are starting to reach cap on every job. Hopefully there'll be enough content to keep the hardcorers happy and playing until the game fills itself
I don't feel these changes will be the perfect changes that makes the game whole, I think its unrealistic to expect it considering how much of a mess the game was at release. I think the real question is whether they will keep the bulk of people already playing interested until 2012+ and whether they can get enough interest for old xi players and others who have already quit/never heard of ffxiv. I'm still holding out hope that this game will blossom, but I don't expect it to until 1st expansion/2012/2013!
I don't feel like they'll make the game magic in the next few months and give it enough interest in the gaming world to suddenly be a success, I think this game will be a slow burner and will take years for population to grow and for the game to become a whole.
You know I don't think SE even cares about "us". Its quite obvious the only reason they left the servers open is because they couldn't sell us a game we couldn't play now could they? they were held liable to keep servers open at the very least OR refund our money. Considering releasing the game early to begin with was to inject cash into the project, they weren't going to refund us for anything, so keeping the servers open was their only viable option. Point in case being that they don't care if we stick around and play or don't...they are doing the bare minimum to keep us around but if we left, at most they risk losing 30K players now. I'm sure whatever future projections they have for this game consist of a hell of a lot more than that otherwise its just stupid business. So IMO content will not be enough to hold over the hardcores and SE will take their sweet time with game...now I'm starting to think PS3 version releases next year in March, before the end of their fiscal year is all they would really care about.Quote:

There's also a "too many cooks in the kitchen" problem. SE's modularization of the teams has had the tendency of giving people in charge of those groups the final say of what happens in their groups, meaning that the overall producer, out of respect for their autonomy, often has to exert a great deal of effort to bring disparate designs in line with each other. It really explains why XIV seems to have a number of different systems with varying degrees of accessibility/risk-reward.
Every game company in existence is so slow.
It takes them 2+ years to roll a decent update, at least some of them are worth it.
On top of it for the first few years they don't even tell us what'll be in it! Unbelievable. Then they release trailers 'n shit.
It's all relative. In this case, FF14 is not keeping up with customer demand and market average.
The worse yet, it can't act haughty because it's launched so badly, the only saving grace is to be better, not further worsening then the competition.
Predictions aside, this does not bode well for SE's reputation...what's left of it.
Yoshi signed on to a tough spot...but then, that's no excuse. Mission impossible is a job description you're suppose to beat the odds at, not make excuses the odds aren't good. If you want to be a nobody that accepts minimal pressure, hide behind a cubicle.
why don't you read my post before popping off about facts. i did not say they were trashed, but that some things that were in the works were trashed while others were put on the back burner.
you can read for yourself yoshi said he was going to stop working on chocobo's and comapnies because he wanted to have them be big and had no use for them at this point. that means they were put on the back burner instead of continuing to work on them.
the new classes and dungeons were in the works already, but hasn't implemented them yet because he decided by himself he was going to work on the battle system first. the polls voted content and he decided to completely redo battle.
now why don't you get your facts straight.
The title of this thread makes me want to see a picture of Yoshida-san dressed as a pizza guy.
YOSHI-P, MAKE IT HAPPEN.
are you so sure this auto attack is the saving grace of the battle system? i think it will lead to walking up and just standing in front of the mob while auto attack kills it for you. how immersive and how boring. if this isn't fantastic then they have done nothing more than waste months of time working on something the majority of players didn't even vote to fix first and the item they did vote for is still not touched.
Who the hell cares about if it'll be immersion or not, seriously?
We'll be able to finally fcking talk to one another, changing strategies on the fly without the loss of sustained DPS, like we could in XI. Sure we can do that now, but if you need to type something out that is longer then a couple words, you're loosing time that you could be doing something while talking.
It's a convenience factor, immersion...lol some of you people on these forums /facepalm
Better they work on this then something absurd like jump...
There's hardly a difference between clicking 1 repeatedly and watching your character auto attack...in fact it becomes second nature that it can be called unconscious kinda like breathing, you do it but you don't think about it. Auto attack will just open up possibilities for a more in depth system imo, they obviously aren't just including auto attack and calling it a day, they are revamping the battle system around it. They said they want to make it so timing attacks and positioning and whatnot take a more prominent role in the fight. As much as you like to repeat it, in FFXI auto attack never came down to "watching the mob die", because if that was the case no one would have played the game, instead it was the battle dynamics and the team work that enticed people and made it all work well together; FFXIV needs this.
so in other words you want this to be a glorified chat room where you sit and talk in battle and do nothing else. i'm sorry i want the battle to be enjoyable not sit and wait for a retarded auto attack to kill the mob while i chit chat. should we just give you every class to 50 and every piece of gear +3 when you register?
This post is so ignorant its funny. Was everything handed to you in FFXI? its not as if FFXIV's battle system is any fun and people are complaining, its the fact that its so damn boring that people want a change. I'm surprised you're not bored out of your mind yet considering you have every class at Rank 50 and most likely all that linking leves and rotating behests every half hour....fun!Quote:

heres what i think of AA, it in and of itself is not evil, but it isnt particularly great either, the best effect of AA is the ability to communicate in battle, but really it becomes unecessary fast usually. And any battle system based around my typing speed will probably be pretty slow.
AA isnt really going to help the battle system at all, on its own, its going to come down to the other changes they make to make battle better, because if yall thought the battle was boring with manual attacks, the battle will be just as boring with AA if not more so.
In fact making battle better will have little do with AA, its going to come down to monster skills/groupings/difficulty. AA will allow you to feel better about talking in battle though, i say feel better because without stamina, every second you waste not using a skill is killing your dps/ability to do your role. why do you think WoW dungeon raid guilds tended to require voice chat even though they had no manual attacking?
As for mack, if timing and position is more important in battle thats definately a good thing, but i dont really see how auto attack was needed to bring that change.
I really hope im wrong and some AA is actually going to really add to the battle system, because otherwise it was a waste to spend so much time figuring out AA that could have been spent elsewhere. Of course maybe AA implemntation is super easy and has nothing to do with the long development time, in which case whatevers clever.
I agree that people find battle boring now, but that has more to do with SP being limited to 10 levels, given out for leve linking and behests, and not enough groups of monsters of varying types. Its not having to hit buttons that makes battle boring. Its the fact that in a 4 man group, nothing 10 levels over you poses that much of a challenge, and in an 8 man group nothing requires you to do more than press 2 buttons. like i said before the important changes wont really be around AA.
Seems like a pretty stupid leap of logic. Being able to communicate without stopping dead = easymode?
Whatever, it's clear you've invested an unhealthy amount of time in this horrid grindfest of a game already anyway, you're obviously enjoying the current system in the same way I like slowly stabbing myself with needles over the course of 3-4 hours a night.
