Shortage of Tank .......

I actually started a second of my 3 legacy down the Gladiator road a few days ago. At 15 I went to the market board to gear up full bronze, HQ and even on Sargatanas, I couldn't make a set from the board. Same thing at 20 with Iron. I ended up switching out to Ksenia and making 2 full sets of Bronze HQ 15, then Iron HQ 20 and putting them on the board. All pieces for 1K or less each.

New tanks should be going in to Sastasha with full HQ and up to date gear. That can't happen if they can't get it.

The first of each set I purchased with my own character. The second was gone in 2 hrs. People want it, we just aren't making it.

Tanking in this game seems mega stressful and not really fun. I am not surprised there is a tank shortage.

This isn't WoW. Go level GLD.

My "main" is WHM, but after getting bored of healing, I tried PLD, and it was a lot of fun. Now I have my PLD relic and I haven't taken WHM into AK for quite some time, since the queue for tanks is near-instantaneous. (Plus, I still need the stupid Hoplite ring... I swear, there's some anti-tank thing going on with their RNG.)

Try playing a tank. You might find it's a lot of fun compared to DPS. (Although I went back to WAR after it being one of my favorite jobs in 1.0, and I hate it now. It really does feel like a terrible PLD.)

Well, its not like people shout for em specifically, I thought it was the general consensus for stuff like AK, TWP, CM and Prae though, since we've generally deal a bit more damage and are better at holding multiple mobs. Heck I don't even have any trouble starting parties for Titan as War. (just that I have to be the one to start them /sigh. Never had anyone leave because I wanted to MT though)

I want to Tank, but people requires them to be perfect and experienced. Of course, the tank is the last person who suffer when people start dropping (because running from stray Eruptions is too hard...), but I would feel hurt anyway.

I'm taking a 3rd job up in fates now and literally every party I have been in has at least 4 tanks.

I mean that. The makeup is usually 4-5 tanks and at least 2 healers, I've gone all the way up to 39 now and I've seen it nearly every party.

People got their first or 2nd jobs, their favorite to 50, and now have realized its handy to bandwagon onto PLD, WHM, SCH. So they're raising them.

What "wut"? According to Yoshi, WARs shouldn't be using Inner Beast whenever possible. So my job is to just... stand there, since I don't really have any defensive cooldowns I can pop. I have run into my share of tank haters. Mostly in the lvl 50 dg. Most people fell to realize that some player are learn the game just like you once had to they are going through the dg. to learn the ins and out just like everyone else. And yeah videos help but you have to learn it for yourself. I admit Im still trying to get my relic but i know i Need higher gear so im running dg for tomes. I like to get them over with also. So before you jump to hating run the dg and if you finish it then it was a good run. teach the other players the better ways and they teach others the community as a hold become better.

Well as a Tank, Level 50 Warrior. When I get 3 pulls away from the final boss in AK, And have one bad pull and 2 people leave and bitch me out because somehow we wiped on trash mobs.

Well the bitching out part really make me not want to play a tank. So basically everytime elitist people bitch out a tank they slowly kill the will of tanks to play.
Personally, I plan on finishing my relic on my warrior and putting my tank to bed because of how I get treated.

For everytime I've been bitched out because of my tanking skills I've had 2-3 parties that went perfectly.

I will Tank for my FC/LSes but not in Duty finder.

Also I would love to see any DPS player play level 50 warrior in end game. And they would find out how hard at times it is to keep hate and everyone safe. When DPS in all 80+ items gear go all out a tank in item 55 and 70 gear doesn't have a chance of keeping hate. Yet they completely and forget about the threat meter. Or better yet don't even give the tank 2-3 actions to build a base amount of hate. I don't know how many times I've toss out a tomahawk and before I can even start doing my next action the DPS are already going full bore on the mob.

Also BLM that never use Sleep or WHM that never once cast repose. Saves a lot of healing and keeps hate loss down.

If someone pulls a mob from a pack Um tanking that ISNT the marked mob, my attitude is "You spank it you tank it" Same goes for that DPS/Healer running ahead of me to Instant Cast pull when Im not ready.

Well, tanks get to 50 and never run lower dungeons again. Most the people who went tank are 50 now. E.g. I have Paladin and Warrior both level to 50, I haven't tanked anything not BCB, WP, AK, Castrum, Or HM Primal in 2 months.

And any tank in a BCB group doesn't use the Duty Finder anymore. Man I haven't used the DF to tank something in weeks. I mean why would I want to que up with random people and take a chance at them being slow, undergeared, etc etc when I can take 2 relic + 1 dps from my BCB static and a relic healer and we clear WP in 14 minutes. Why should I want to spend 40 minutes doing something I could do in 14? Time is money.

Imo, The duty finder is a luxury item. If you get a group in it, great, if not stop crying and go do something else (and yes I've sat in que as a dps for 2 hours) I just ask my FC is someone wants to que tank with me and poof, insta que.

There is nothing SE can do about tank shortages in the DF, they can't make tanks QUE up randomly.

Also, our FC has so many freagin tanks were going on BCB group 4 with 5 half built already. Tanks are everywhere. The problem isn't their is a shortage of tanks, the problem is they don't que up in the DF without a premade.

Short Version: If you want to run with other people, you need to play with other people. That means befriending some tanks in an LS or FC and getting into your own premade niche.

If a DPS pulls an off mob from me I nicely ask them to follow the kill order and tell them "You spank it you tank it"

As for DPS or heals running ahead of me I tell them nicely to stop or I can find myself another Instant GF Queue ( If I get a 15min lockout I just Gather or Craft )

My FC has literally more Tanks and healers than we can party with. We always have tanks for coils and any HM primal, and only ever so rarely do we have to use the duty finder to get a tank.
I for one dread the duty finder. Everyone's main instinct seems to be 'blame the tank if I die'. Two days ago, I had to do a WP DF run just cuz I logged in way early. We reached the second boss, where he spawn adds and can follow a random player, and the adds will follow that same player. Silly DPSes just stood there and got aoed to death. First thing they did? "Tank hold aggro omg."
Tanks are there, in fact I find a lot of them shouting for parties in Revnant's Toll. Just go there and get one, don't use the duty finder. Most tanks and healers avoid it.

50 relic Paladin here, the toxic community and "requests" and "speed runs" and elitists and demanding demands of the demanding community have turned LOTS of people off to tanking. The remaining tanks are bullies, always pissed, take charge of groups and a generally not nice when in a PUG. I for one am guilty of all of this, because of 50 levels of being talked down to and bullied kinda molded me into a jerk tank. Gonna be completely honest with ya OP if you turn into a jerk tank and I run into you on my relic Monk which is the job I main. I wouldn't even be upset with you. Not even a little bit.

I have not taken my pld into any dungeons in over a month because of the community. I would admit it was my fault if it was but seems like the rest of the party doesn't want to take blame for something. Last thing is the speedruns/rushing sorry but not a big fan of just racing through content in a week like 90% of the 50's in the game.

It's pretty awful (at least the body piece), but thankfully there are options after you live through DL. Mainly AF2 chest/head+hoplite body or the Allagan chest if you decide to run Coil. A lot less ugly and imo WAR has the nicest AF2 chest piece in the game.

Yeah, about that. I religiously use those spells but there are incredible amounts of people who strangely prefer to spam weakly AOEs which wake the enemies right back up, even if you've marked them as locked-down targets. So I'm pretty sure a lot of people eventually don't even bother with sleep/repose anymore at some point, and just focus on dps or healing. I use them nevertheless but I've found it startling how in 80% of the groups I land in, sleep/repose is rendered useless by other party members, in some cases even if you point it out or explicitly say so.

There are bad tanks and there bad DPS and bad healers, but it's more likely to succeed if everyone follows what the bad tank believes than what the bad DPS believes, so you might as well go with the tank, even if he's wrong. There's no dungeon that's so hard where even if you're marking the '1' in the worst possible way, you'd somehow wipe by attacking the '1' first. Honestly the tank really doesn't affect the group that much unless he's purposely pointing frontal AEs at the group, or standing on instant kill ground effects on purpose. So while most tanks are indeed bad and have no idea what they're doing, there's no reason to argue with them if you know what you're doing because the only thing you can't overcome is if the tank dies on purpose.

Unless the tank is grossly undergeared, sleeping enemies is a waste of time. If you're doing something like Stone Vigil where it's actually possible for a bad group to run out of time, it's actually imperative that you DO AE all the packs of 3 mobs to get more time for Isgebind. Now of course you can also AE and get yourself or better yet the whole group wiped, but in that case your group almost certainly could not have beaten Isgebind before the time runs out so you didn't really lose anything.

It's pretty simple really.

All the bad/mediocre tanks have quit tanking altogether, probably due to all the abuse they get which makes it difficult for them to actually learn their role.

All the good tanks are already in an FC, meaning they don't use the duty finder when doing dungeon runs.

The only time I use the duty finder when I'm on my paladin is when I'm feeling bored and want to carry people through ifrit and garuda HM since I can both main and off tank. Other than that I just ask for DDs from my FC or my friend list since at least then I know that I'm getting competent people in my party.

Being a Dragoon, I have 15 levels in Marauder cause of the whole pre-req thing. So last night I figured i'd give Tanking a try cause I main DPS and sometimes Healer. Thanks to that run of Sastasha, I understand why Tanks ragequit lol. It doesn't help that the 2 DPS were Archers and one of them was normally a lvl 50 Warrior. So yeah. =/ I might give it another try, but this time with my FC or just other players i know that know how to stick to their roles.

That's exactly how I feel, even though my main is a tank. I'm scared of trying new dungeons with pugs, just because there are so many players that'll be really abusive you don't know the instance inside out and can keep aggro no matter how bananas dpsers are going. But, at the same my fear is probably much worse than there is need for. I've only had problems once or twice, most people have been really nice, giving me hints and tips so I have the chance to learn my class/roll and the dungeons.

With that said though, there really is a weird kind of pressure on tanks... Maybe it's just me that has been lucky playing with nice people.

Hard to hold agro when the dps have relic +1 and you don't .

Lucky for me I decided not to do fates , I did healer first so I could understand how healing worked . Then I made warrior and paladin both to 50 doing dungeons . Took along time but I mastered the skills needed to get me through rough times .


However , I never get tells saying hey my good friend want to help us tank such and such . If there is lack of tanks then maybe you just lack the ability to become friends with them . My friends list is pretty slim and Im in full darklight .

There is so much truth in this.

Maybe be nice to tanks and not call them "shit tank" for every mistake they do. This could make people want to play tank again more.
Seriously, some classes getting treaten like shit and you guys really wonder why no one wants to deal with that responsibility?

I have to disagree. Pretty much always use your wrath stacks when you've got them (and *not* just on IB), it takes just a few seconds to get them back up without using your off gcd abilities :T Plus you've got infuriate (last one you want to use) and vengeance. On Garuda, you can always use SC as soon as the plumes pop in the first couple phases. Even as an ot I pop defiance on, infuriate, SC to get a lil bit of damage in there while they're grouped together.

Practice your rotations a bit more, try to run with the same healer that gets to know your patterns and you definitely will change your mind about it being a 'terrible pld' :p.

The thing that makes aggro management different in FFXIV is that unlike most other mmo's tanks here lack 2 of the 4 usual tanking tools: forced taunts and aggro leeches. This makes aggro management much more of a full party responsibility than you typically find elsewhere.

IMHO AoE attacks are usually a waste of time and inefficient use of resources. They're more efficient against weak mobs that die quickly anyway. You're usually going to take down mobs more quickly by putting maximum firepower into one at a time. There's an exception when basically everybody spam-AoEs enemies to death in a coordinated effort (the slimes in WP for instance), but if it's only 1-2 using AoEs against trash mobs, they're wasting resources and time.

I've seen it way too often how somebody thinks they're saving time by AoEing mobs in high-level dungeons when they're only chipping away at all of them, when the same character could have been devastating them more quickly one by one.

I don't understand complaints about Agro management. So long as your tank marks the target kill order and you've got a few people that follow that simple concept should very rarely have issues. Of course there are always a few idiots out there, but for the most part no. I've very rarely been 'abused' while tanking.

Everyone says 1/2 the tank population, ie warriors, are useless in end game content and they wasted their time leveling warrior over paladin.

Now we wonder why we have shortage of tanks...

I'll call Scooby Doo and the Gang to solve this mystery.

Tanks are bored of tanking for impatience PuG DPS.

Tanks are bored of running the same instance over and over and over again while taking longer to gear up (seriously, the drop rates on tank gear is low, and the combined Head+Chest and Legs+Feet DL gear is a massive mistake).

Tanks would like a taunt that works; because there's always a bard that pulls before you're even into melee range...

Levelling a tank if PAINFUL...

... but mostly;

Tanks are in FCs with good players on voice comms; the DF is a waste for no extra rewards.

I say all of this as a tank.

Oh, and if PuG players continue to rip on Warriors, they'll stop too. Warriors can tank just fine; stop being idiots and accept them.

Hi, i'm a damn good tank.

I'm still not 100% comfortable in the tank role so I've been sticking with the first dungeons to practice until I can do it in my sleep, and yet despite being in dungeons where you could very likely get away with 4 naked conjurers and still win, people are already super critical. Healers laughing at the idea of bringing any aggro to the tank instead of running off in random circles and not using Fluid Aura on whatever the tank is attacking, DPS who seem to think the whole dungeon is a DPS race with the other DPS (or worse, the tank), or all 3 just blatantly pulling everything as soon as they can run to it like they're used to when soloing squirrels and ladybugs outside.

I've never complained about/wondered why there aren't as many tanks; the chances of getting a group of decent human beings are minimal next to getting stuck with 3 people who could be outdone by chimps and yet blame the tank for everything. The hypocrisy is unbearable.

I'm not saying "WAR is useless" as my point of view. I generally play with a WAR tank since that is what my wife plays. I was pointing out the general view of the player base. WARs are generally seen as the "lesser" tank and have trouble getting accepted in groups. My wife has leveled her monk to do content over her WAR now. Why? She think paladin is really boring to play and rather play a DPS over PLD. I'm sure other WAR share this view, hence we have a tank shortage.

I loved leveling tank classes and was sure to do 100% of the leveling in Dungeons to help other people. I still randomly hop on to go to lower level dungeons but I really wish there were another tank class for me to actually level. Crossing my fingers that SE goes insane and somehow pulls out a Musketeer tank job lol
