I agree. I like how in WoW, you can use all your mounts on any character you make once you get that mount. I think mounts you get from main story quests however should be unusable until you complete the quest that rewards the mount.

It doesn't need any gatekeeping at all as it simply won't happen. If this was your typical MMO with one job per character, then there could be an argument for them to do something like that. Given that nothing is ever shared outside of anything on the account level, I don't see them working to create any kind of link where this might be possible.
There's clearly some money to be made on story skips and I'm sure that's more alts than mains. What's being proposed here would absolutely negate any need for that. They would be foolish to cut into that and the OP should just buy the story skip already. It's worth it. :p
I'm not the illiterate one here.
I would never imply that you were! Just that you didn't read the full post because if you did then you wouldn't be saying that account-wide mounts, PvP milestones, Island Sanctuary, minions, aether currents, orchestrion rolls, etc would make people not buy story skips c:
In fact, if anything it should have the opposite effect. More people will want to buy story and level skips because most of you can't be bothered to level an alt the free way.
This makes no sense. How does SE benefit by having players spend more time in the game considering it's a flat monthly fee to play?
Not to mention most players are probably already spending as much time in the game as they have available to play. Making things account wide doesn't suddenly increase the length of a day from 24 to 28 hours.
As an altoholic, I've never been in favor of things being account wide. If I want a reward on a character, I'll play the character to earn what I want.
The only exceptions I could see would be some of the achievements that require hundreds of hours of grinding (like the hunt mounts). Even then, I'm fine with them being as they are.
What's the point of having all those alts if you aren't actively playing them? Extra storage space? Does a pack mule really need to have all the bling its owner has?
So if people owned more alts they'd be more likely to spend in the Mogstation, plus it'd keep them subbed for longer if they were interested in keeping their alts up to date for glamour purposes.
I actually roleplay on my alts, farm glamours and other jobs, decorate the spaces I own, send out retainers for extra chances at white and black dyes, PvP, and gpose. There are a lot of things you can do with your alts!
And the answer is, yes, yes they do!
The concept of having more than one character scares the achievement hunter and raider.
I read the post. I read what followed.
Some of the things you mention are actually tied to story skip, like aether currents and (eventually) Island Sanctuary. There's story progress in the achievements as well as duty unlocks. The rest is just not at all essential.
People can and will do what they like, but I don't think people should be encouraged to make alts. They take up valuable space. On the NA servers, we already have struggles with the population. Balmung was recently flagged as congested and no new characters can be created. At the end of the day, the game just isn't designed with alts in mind, but the one character that can do it all. Even if they could potentially do any of this sharing business, they probably won't.
