Its true that ff XI is the first thought that comes to mind when I think of jobs, I also spent a good 13+ years playing it.

But you look at other lore and other ff games and the trend is still the same. Every ff game that I can recall off the top of my head smn's actually summoned alot of different 'primals'

Drg - yes ff XI they had a dragon companion but it you also look at the lore of a drg they were dragon masters. Look at the game legend of dragoon they drew their powers from dragons, other games like suikoden drg's rode on dragons and battled together. There is tons of lore in various forms about drg's and it always revolves around drawing thier strength from dragons or having a dragon companion.

Brd and ranger have always been 2 separate jobs in the ff series and I don't think they've ever been combined like in XIV

Nin and thief have always been separate jobs too with unique skills just like brd and ranger haven't really been ever combined

We interrupted the summoning ritual at Xelphatol, meaning Garuda could only flicker in and out of our corporeal realm and performed attacks as she was able. The Ixali summoner didn't "summon Garuda for an attack", they tried and failed repeatedly to stabilise her summoning during the very stressful situation of fending us off as well. A primal is without question a blight on the realm and within the current confines of the lore, will not happen.

The Carbuncle glamour quest does teach us that our egis can take different plausible forms we envision though, so maybe bank on getting a better model through that.

Are they? All I know that's common amongst dragoons are the aesthetics of their armour, the lance, and the jump ability. Freya from FFIX had no connection to dragons from what I recall. Neither does Kain from FFIV I think. FFXIV is allowed its own take on the dragoon. Besides which, dragoons do in fact take some of their power from dragons. They channel the power from Nidhogg's eye for Blood of the Dragon. (Though it's not explicit if this applies to all dragoons, or just the Azure Dragoons us and Estinien.) (Source: lorebook)

If I recall correctly drg's in ff 9 like freya they worship dragons as protectors of their ppl.

Kain from ff4 I would need to double check lore on drg's there but at the moment I don't think he really has any connections to dragons but it's been a while since I've played that game.

I think the lore goes that they befriend dragons but hunt the ones that go insane and go into a rage as they're far to dangerous in this state and cannot be left alone but in this game they flat out despise dragons and hunt them down.

Dragoons mainly channel dragon powers to surprise fight against dragons. Been that way since FF3.

As for the whole "This is special snowflake FF XIV" you can GTFO with that shit.

Scummoner in XIV is merely WoW affliction mage ripoff and generally has little to do with summoning to begin with. It's all about DoTs.

but well yeah that would be a kind of compromise most of us could life with (imo) – I would like if every Primal would get his own "Trance-Finisher" and that's probably more realistic than my wish to control our egis like the monster-pots in potd :3

edit: but I can feel her thoughts... smns should be based more on their summons in one or another way... I even can imagine more special-egi skills instead of smn skills for the SB 60+ lvls... would be refreshing as well... much more than another burst or dot skill.

We kinda already have examples of this in game already barring POTD in the primals Shiva and King Thordan where Ysayle and Archbishop Thordan VII summon primals into themselves allowing them some control over the primals but this requires quite a bit of aether to do in the form of cryistals or one of nidhogg's eyes to fuel the summon

I think in concern to this all everyone is saying is that basicly smn in 14 isn't actually a smn but a knock off with the smn name.

Like smn is ok I guess but only able to smn 3 things, I have levelled it to 60 but it's not as fun as an actual summoner job. I know I'm not the only one that is disappointed with smn's lack of summons.

yeah kind of that or at least like Yuna in ffx - sitting on their shoulder, or ffxiii where the chars use them like a kind of "mount" while summoned (f.e odin & lightning).
