Well it helps to read the description of the game which does state you can not use it with steam.
Which is why they won't give you a refund.Quote:
Notice: This product is not compatible with the Steam version of FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn. If you’ve purchased FFXIV: A Realm Reborn on Steam, then you must also purchase FFXIV: Heavensward on Steam to upgrade your existing account.
Doesn't mean they won't give a refund. I bought FFXI: seekers of alduin mistaking it for the base game, I emailed support saying that I bought the wrong item and the only copy of XI contains all expansions, I got a refund despite it being my fault. The warnings are to 'prevent' inconvenience of support, not as a no refund policy, keep being persistant OP, and I'm sure they will give you your refund.
Uh, can't you just download the game through the normal launcher instead of steam? I mean technically you paid for the game, so it should show up as "PC" on your square account... unless they have a special "steam" tag. (Which would be weird and stupid and completely frustrating.)
Edit: Deleted rest of text because the things I have looked up seem to indicate this is the case, which is lame, was just a thought. I guess keep bugging support, that is really stupid.
A good business wants to help their customers and understands that someone can become confused when purchasing products. It sounds like the OP understands they made a mistake they are just looking for some compassion and a way to rectify it. I work for a major worldwide company that produces goods enjoyed in almost every country in the world and I promise you that my vision is to have customers happy and enjoying their purchase. I would assume Square Enix likewise would feel this way.
I had same problem with it when hw came out. Both Steam and Square said no refund. Ended up with buying hw twice
They do indeed have a special Steam tag on the Mogstation:

More confusingly, the Steam version of the game and the non-Steam version are exactly the same (as in literally the same game files on the disk). When you install the game Steam downloads 2.1 from its servers (the version it was at when XIV came out on Steam), but after that the launcher handles all the updates/patches from SE directly like it does for everyone else. Also, unlike most Steam games, because it's not actually a Steam specific version you can run the game without even needing to install/play on Steam, simply because the game files are the same.
The only difference between the two types of account is the game code you use to activate the game flags your account as either Steam or non-Steam. As far as I know it's not possible to change a PC account to/from Steam.
:(
Ya I edited my post after looking into it a bit more. That is really, really, really stupid. Wonder if that was a Square choice or a Valve choice. I'm assuming Valve so they continue to get a slice of the pie. (lol don't read into that, just speculation.) It is really lame that steam is considered a separate device via mogstation, since it is still PC, just a different store.
I figured the files were the same, however steam likes to drop things in that steamapp folder, which was my initial thinking. (Note to self: don't use steam for MMOs in the future. lol)
Anyway thanks for showing me that sir. ^^ -b
Edit: So wait, just out of curiosity, are you allowed to add a non-steam version of the game to the account? (Like you can with ps4/Windows) if not, that is extra lame.
