At the start, definitely. Though like you said, the animations began to improve in the Treasures and up expansions (Adoulin and the add-on Rhapsodies being a massive step up).
Here's an action scene from Rhapsodies of Vana'diel (spoilers).

Cs in general don't interest me, but quality wise?, hmm....not gonna knock ffxi on this one , they did a pretty good job even with the much poorer graphics to work with (there were simply far too many of them though lol.)
FFXIV is ok too, far better graphics and hold about the same interest level for me. But similar animation wise to ffxi
And I'm quite happy with kitties here, they are finally beautiful ,not the homely abominations that were Mithra..couldn't stand them there. :)
The music when she starts fighting, easily one of the best soundtracks from the ff series, it's great!
Too be honest would you even call them cats in this game? I mean all they have is a tail and cat ears and depending on sub race different teeth you can hardly see. I much prefer FFXI because of how they looked. Here they just seem like the generic anime adaptation of what they think a cat person would be like. They look more human than cat in FFXIV :/ Mithra looked more like cats than what we have. I just see it as Hyurs doing cosplay as a cat now.
This describes in totality what the cut scenes in FFXIV pretty much are. There's no variety in camera angles or shots. Everything seems to be had been shot with a 50 mm focal length camera on a tripod. Where the characters enter stage left, say their lines, /handover, and exit stage left not knowing from where they came from or where they went. There's rarely no camera movement, no panning in or out, no use of the camera as a tool to convey emotion. It's all static. Like always, they rely more on pretty graphics and load music and the scenes still look bland.
I know it's taboo to bring up what was considered a failure of a game into the discussion but cutscenes was one thing 1.0 got right. Then... I guess we settled for less and what we have now is "acceptable".

I loved that about swtor is that our character was "involved" in cutscenes we laid out the hurt, engaged with npcs, actually took part in cutscene battles where as in ffxiv we.........well we brandish our weapons once in a while maybe change our facial expressions.......thats about it sadly
