I'm quite sure Yoshi said something like that, I'm gonna look for the post.

I think that was mis-translated considering the Cobalt gear itself can be seen as a tanking piece. So was he saying the piece of gear was for tanking or that specifically the color red was for tanking? Also if that's true, why is the Steel version of that set listed in blue? Would you not want red for tanking purposes?
If the color system is working as an upgrade then the whole process of dyeing is something like another synth for the same piece with another chance of failure (you want better stats? you have to work and risk for that). To me it makes sense, especially after looking carefully at the new recipe list: every piece of gear that already lead to a particular role have only one color variation (plate set, hauby, tunic) while those that could be used with different roles have more variety (robes, shirts, crafting and gathering gears).
About the steel being blue... well I just don't know ^^' when I first read that thing I thought that every color would be linked to a specific role from R1 to 50 but clearely it's not the case, maybe that's because using always the same color would have been boring...
You also run into the issue that if Red = tanking, why would there be red robes =P
From that link:
Cobalt Sabaton (Armorer Recipe)
(Level49 gear) *High level range foot gear (for tanks)
Cobalt Sabaton[RD] (Armorer Recipe)
(Gear level 49) *For tanks, enhanced cobalt sabaton with better stats
To me, that means that all colored versions will have enhanced stats but they'll be the same. There will essentially be undyed gear stats and dyed gear stats. So Red doesn't necessarily mean much of anything but the fact that it's dyed does. The dying process does add a piece to the gear so it would make sense that it has some enhanced stats.
You could be right, but then why on the list there's only one color variation for the plates, two for robes and three for gathering gears? If they wanted to just show the process without putting every different color then why putting more recipes for a certain type of equip and only one for another?
Also, it isn't casual: if you want a plate set you obviousely want to tank, so there's only certain stats you would need (1 color variation), on the other hand if you equip a robe you could either heal or go dps so there are two different "builds" that you might want (2 color variations) and if you equip a jacket you could either be a miner, a botanist or a fisher (3 color variations) and these are just a few exemples, but if you look carefully at the whole list trying to imagine colors as different upgrades for different roles it does make sense for every recipe.
That's why I think we won't be able to use any dying recipe that's not already listed and I think that the same gear in two differents colors will have different stats, but I really hope to be wrong.
