I have a mansion, and I like it. It's located right in a nice little plaza with market board & summoning bell, has my mailbox, striking dummy, garden, etc that I get to use without the massive crowds. I totally agree. I don't think I'll ever scrounge up enough cash for a mansion (I'm married with a toddler and working 40+ a week. I'm still working on getting my second pre-Heavensward 50 to 60!), but I have enough now to buy even the most expensive small on my server 3 times over, and there's no land to buy. It's very disheartening. The housing was a big draw for me; I LOVE to decorate. :(

the only thing i use my private house for anymore is the FC's furniture storage (since you can pass some items through the FC chest) Since no one stepped up i took control of all the FC airship stuff so i ended up getting officer rank which worked out in the end because now i just play around with the FC house and the leader trust me not to screw stuff up.

But that still does not fix a lot of issues i still have... would really like to remove my ADS light from my private house and put in FC house. Since the ADS illumination thing cost over 1 mil gil now i think it is more than reasonable to be able to move something i already made.

I'm kind of with you there OP; the personal housing system leaves a lot to be desired. As far as being in a bad place due to owning a house, if I'd known how insanely expensive it was going to be to level crafting in HW I'd have saved the money and used it for that. My server's economy is fairly depressed and the 3.5 mil for a small plot is a significant amount of money for a single player to come up with.

Am I happy I got the house? 100% absolutely, hands down, yes.

Do I wish I'd waited, used that money to level crafting, and potentially bought a larger plot later? 100% absolutely, hands down, yes.

Would I like to see personal housing be more functional and not just be a doll house that's fun to play with? 100% absolutely, hands down, yes.

Would I like to see an effective ownership and furnishing/item transfer system? 100% absolutely, hands down, yes.

They backpedaled because a crappy solution to their crappy system is not good. It would only be a minor bandaid that would address only a tiny fraction of FFXIV's housing problems.

The system needs a complete redesign into fully instanced housing that everyone gets for either an extremely nominal fee or simply after unlocking it via a quest. Start with a small-sized house. They can then spend as much gil as they want upgrading size and/or decorating it.

Basically, they need to copy WildStar.

TBH I think the private FC rooms are even worse off than private housing. If anything goes wrong in your FC, you lose all of your stuff, and people should know by now now tenuous guilds can be.

Following that logic, they should stop doing anything with the FC housing system too. Tell me, what is the % of the player population do you think saw and interact with the full interface of the airship system?

Yes, and despite this is the first time I'm making post on this topic I have been reading this issue a long time. And I fail to understand why so many people (especially on the non-owner camp) don't understand this. Whether you have a house or not have a house, we are both players and clients of the developers. We can both agree the current system is bad and in need of fixing. However the onus is on SE to come up with a proper and satisfied solution to all parties. The selfishness I observe baffle me because they are willing to give the developer who made a bad system a free pass, and put the burden on the other players just so their own personal interest is serve. I ... do ... not ... get ... it. Come one we're in the 21st century here, consumers ought to be smarter than that. This kinda of mentality should have already been extinct after the Medieval.

I believe allow the player to transfer the house between themselves (with necessary measure in place to prevent exploiters) would elevate a lot of these problem. Yes, there should be more housing, but adding more will only increase the cap to certain level, and it's only a matter of time before it become stagnant again. The old assumption is that abandon houses are due to people stop playing, but this thread proved that there are players who are playing, but don't play their house any more. (And to make it clear, I would love to play with my house more ... if only they give me something new to play with). Allow player to sell and buy house properly will at least create a dynamic in the supply and demand equation. It's a natural order of thing, people buy something and get bored with it eventually, when that happens the house should be allowed to get back to the market.

And no, that should happens via a proper system, not by a "screw you so I can get my stuff" system.
