Thought I replied to this, but I can't find my post >_>
Oh well, will make it again.
The relic quest line is built on shaky lore.
I'm pretty sure canon doesn't allow us to kill the Primals (HM) more than once.
Though you could say we happened to be on the quest when the primals came back for the second time.
But then we have the books which ask us to go to the NM versions of dungeons that have a HM.
That's going back in time, technically.
Most of these type of things get explained by us reliving memories.
This happened with Savage, Ultima EX or the Crystal Tower weekly quest.
The Primal Focus weekly didn't even bother.
The Relic had too much to really try so it's best not to try to fit the details into canon.
It's more like reliving heroic deeds of past heroes or sometimes forging your own. The context isn't given, but it should be assumed there was some.
And stuff like going to Normal Mode dungeons would need to be overlooked.
Even if it's not canon in the story, or you want to say "The PC is just reliving memories," you (the player, not the character, you the player) are still choosing to slaughter literally tens of thousands of animals and people so you can get a glowy sword / axe / lance etc.
Do you feel like a hero yet?
A weapon forged in endless battle. Yea, that can be heroic.
Lol.
I only really look at the relic quest loosely, and the grind can be put on the backdrop.
Like a legendary Monk went across the lands, challenging man and beast alike till his weapon glowed with the resolve of his/her fallen foes.
Something like that.
Like I said, since there's no context I think it would make more sense storywise to believe there was.
The beasts could be those that attacked you in the journey or humanoids were fighting a town you came upon during that journey.
I don't really RP, but if I were to consider the relic quest in the story it would have some internal lore context or be disregarding as just part of the game.
If it's really just me the player, where there's no context and just the quest.
I did what the game asked because it had a reward?
Why would I consider the pixel animals and people if I'm looking at it from a player perspective?
Those things are real to the character, but just part of a game to the player.
Well, the norse tought they'd get to heaven by dying in battle among their defeated enemies, and in stories many weapons are not truly forged until bathed in the blood of someone (the example off the top of my head is both Soul Edge and Soul Calibur from the SC series) so, while arguably evil, it's not unprecedented.
You're also told to go get stuff from the Primals as if it's really feasible.
And told to go back in time to kill things that were already dead.
I get that you're being all cynical about it, to be funny.
But the canon of the relic doesn't fit.
Either you make up its own lore or disregard it completely.
I don't know, I just can't take it at face value if the face value has logical inconsistencies.
I can get materia from killing pretty much anything, for the Novus; or, more likely, buy it from others without ever spiritbinding personally. For the Nexus step pretty much everyone grinds Primals or T4. The Primals need to be destroyed and T4 is nothing but machines. The Zodiac step is iffy again, just because of some of the things we have to kill; but the Zeta stage is back to Primals and T4.
I'm not saying that we're innocent, but I'm saying they could easily have changed some of the requirements to prevent the need for genocides of beastmen or hapless creatures we don't really have good reason to kill. . .
We all have to make sacrifices for the greater good, never mind that I'm never going to be able to sacrifice myself. Everyone in the world exists to sacrifice themselves for me and my greater good, and it's my job to honor each and every one of them for the sake of a better tomorrow. There's nothing fundamentally broken about it at all. Not at all.
:D
It's good to be the hero.
