Gearing towards STR, minimizing tank oath uptime (within reason), using strategies that maximize general uptime as a melee, getting Paeon/Trick Attack/Fey Light/Goad. After that it's all about proper CD and pot usage, which can be a bit trickier than initially it initially seems, since sometimes you need to save stuff for survival/aggro or making sure you're not pacified or combining CDs properly instead of using things purely on CD.
Honestly WAR is one of the most complex classes to do great damage on while making it consistent and easy on healers. PLDs much less so but still a bit of trial and error and staggered CDs for survival.
PLD and WAR dps is pretty much the same outside of tanking stances, WARs often get more since they do more damage in defiance over shield oath and it's much easier to switch between the two without impacting combos and whatnot. A PLD that's comfortable with the content should be able to put up good numbers, assuming they have the right gear of course. Also hitting all those shield swipe procs can help when tanking stuff.
Fight or Flight is the Paladin's Berserk counterpart. What Paladin's lack is the Unchained "turn off Tank stance's damage penalty while keeping all the benefits" button. The main reason that the Warrior can generate enmity better than a Paladin is because they can stack both buffs together.
Maybe when it becomes a bit more challenging than a telephone with super fat buttons.
