They could go the AQ/Naxx40 route and tune content in such a way that it forces people to stack resistance in some way. Killing Sapphiron in naxx was difficult without some frost resistance gear (there was even an achievement for killing sapphiron with everyone in the raid having below a certain amount of frost resist).

Both of these reasons are asinine and you know it. The randomness is in what grade of materia you get and what stat it is. There doesn't need to be a 'fail' or a 'booby prize.' That's simply ridiculous. I don't understand why some people can honestly justify some of the broken systems that are in this game.

Besides removing the useless elemental resistance, it should really be whatever stat is on the piece of equipment is what it pulls from for converting. So yes if you are doing DoW/DoM accessories you have a 1/2 chance at getting a stat you want, which sure isn't far off from the current 1/3 for DoH and DoL.

And before anyone talks about how it would impact the market, they sure in the hell don't care about that:
