Don't really see the point as open world mobs are pointless to level on unless you're doing your hunting log. What do you want, potions that heal you for 50 hp? That's all I ever got out of the crappy chests in FFXI. It was always temporary items.

That never happened in FF XIV. There are coffers that occasionally drop during leve quests as was the case in version 1.0.
I'd like to see chests in strongholds of various sorts in the game. ^^
There seems to be some confusion as to what I am talking about with this topic...
In most of the MMO's I have played when you kill a basic enemy (mob) in the open world while questing and leveling, the mob may drop a container you can loot or have some indication that you can search the corpse for loot or the loot itself will appear around the corpse to be picked up.
I always enjoyed this feature as it creates a potential in each kill you make to drop something you can use, once in WoW I was grinding undead for Dawn rep tokens and a epic mage staff dropped... extremely rare drop, almost worth more on the market than it was to actually equip it.
You can imagine how much I enjoyed that experience... and its rather disappointing FFXIV doesn't have that potential at all.
With exp being somewhat minimal for killing mobs, and lack of loot potential its far easier to simply by pass the majority of enemies and just focus on the objective targets be that quest or log targets, which makes the open world a waste and a pity because it is a rather nice environment to wander through.
It probably relates to the fact that all present content has to be considered before they add new content. Just like the difference in EXP for free roaming mobs compared to EXP in other content, if it has the potential to leech players from the content that requires group play or parties, they likely won't want to add it because there would be a deficit of participation in that group only content, making it harder for others to complete it.
I like the idea and thumbs up to OP, I just don't see it happening though, unfortunately :( .
