Why do people want solo play in an MMORPG?

I don't know who those people are but yes a MMO should not feel like a singleplayer game with co-op. There's plenty of those out there that you can play without a monthly fee. But the more you can avoid having people stand around and do nothing but wait in a MMO the better.

I don't think you have to worry about the game being "TOO solo", after all it is an mmo, like many people have said, there is something for everyone in ARR. And trust me after you stand around for 2-3 hours waiting to find the perfect level 10-12 xp grind party, while your friends went out and did some quests alone and are now level 20, you too will jump on the quest wagon!

I'm not going to pretend that I have read every post on this topic in this thread or other websites, but I have been in a quite a bit of these discussions and haven't seen one person say they want the ability to solo bosses lol. I'm not saying that hasn't been said, but in the last few years with seeing solo play being brought up, never has anyone I have seen say that. It makes no sense for that..

mmmm I doubt that lol. Im usually the guy standing in uldah shouting for 4 hours, or joining someone else's shout. While questing is fun, its not my cup of tea usually. I wanna fight the big stuff. Oh look theres a dragon 10 stories tall. LETS GO POKE IT WITH A STICK! I'll kite tank something for 4 hours if I think I can get people to help me lol. I gained my hardcoryness from FFXI endgame. only 3 people at khim camp? NO PROBLEM I GOT THIS SH*T!!! 5 hours later *ls logs in* "hey guys whats up" "KHIM!!!!!" "omw!" LOL

How do you plan to get to that dragon to poke? ^.~

You will get to experience that in ARR too, it will just be more organized, you wont have to be alone for 5 hours holding a mob waiting for people to log on, you can go do some solo stuff and when everyone logs on, than you all go as a group and kill your hard dragon or primal or what ever else ARR has in store.

A good MMO will have stuff to do solo, or in game tools that form a party for you. Because not eveyone will know people they want to play with at all hours of the day.

Because group leveling FFXI was one of the worst MMO experiences. It strictly limited exploration, provided no content or even a dribble of story, and consigned players to repetitive droning on monsters.

I think both options should be viable. If people choose soloing over group play, then that suggests something isn't enjoyable about group play mechanics.
