Same issue here. It also works if you remove/rename steamclient64.dll from your Steam folder before launching the game.

Here's a dump of the process when it's hanging, not that it's super helpful. Seems like there's some issue with the way this game is using the steam API

EDIT: Works. Tried multiple times while having Steam on. Not sure if or how this fix affects any other instalations of games, but this appears to be a PERMANENT fix.

3 months later, a member of a gaming community comes up with a solution that SE and STEAM could not. Just wow..

It's not permanent solution unfortunately, Steam will redownload the dll the next time its opened, and who knows the consequences of removing it, but at least it's a different way of launching the game besides force closing Steam.

My FFXIV client via Steam still freezes (and requires task manager to close) upon ending my game session, any ideas on that e.g. can I rename another file?

I did some more experimenting, no need to rename/remove steamclient64.dll in the Steam Folder.

Instead, I renamed

Code:

steam_api64.dll

inside

Code:

<Steam Folder>\steamapps\common\FINAL FANTASY XIV Online\boot

to

Code:

steam_api64-bak.dll

That seems to consistently work for me, and it persists through Steam restarting. I'm assuming it will work until FFXIV pushes an update for that file. Again, not sure what the consequences are, but it allows me to play the game without quitting Steam.

Interesting - within Final Fantasy XIV Online I don't have a boot to steam file, but I do have a 'boot' folder, and within that, similarly named files, but none that match exactly what you shared above. I'll make a backup and mess around renaming and see.... thanks a lot for sharing.
