I really like the new look on my Raen. Though there seems to be a strange difference in texture on the horns vs the scales.

The situation is very grey, I agree. That's what we're discussing. :)
if anything I think the situation up to this point has been discussed very black and white. Most of the posts in this thread are black and white "my character is ruined" "no it isn't." Repeat forever.
This is a great post!
I don't think it's fair to paint people that like the updated looks as indifferent to change.
I like the update (mostly) and I would rather them keep it as is (with minor changes to the face markings and mooncat fangs).
I don't want the devs to go back and do a 1 to 1 port, because it can look weird/bad for one reason or another.
I trust the developers and the character designers to know what they are doing.
I've also heard concerns among friends over the idea that the devs might roll back changes in order to please the people complaining on the forums.
In my experience, the reaction to the update is majorly positive, however, people happy with their update have fewer reasons to go on the forums and voice their opinion.
This does not invalidate their opinion at all.
Do the opinions of people that frequent the forums hold more weight?
I don't know, but I hope the devs aren't only taking into account the opinions of the people complaining.
Huh? I mean, that's not really what I was trying to discuss in that specific reply, but, uh...yeah.
I want to be empathetic here, I really do, but I feel like those who keep saying that people keep posting that their character has been ruined has been like, posted more than the people actually saying that, if you catch my drift.
Well, more so, it's been like, the same select few people saying it, arguing with another group of repeated visitors. Many of those who dislike the changes and post calmer thoughts on why they dislike the changes get ignored or either a few attempts at some bad faith questions before coming to an agreement, at worst.
I understand that the people you are talking about have used extreme, aggressive language, and I know that can be upsetting to see. I suppose I just see it as mostly inoffensive since it's solely their own character they're insulting, even if exaggerated. Then again, I just don't tend to take people who're clearly acting on emotions 100% literally...
But I think I need to follow my own advice and back off from asking questions like these. See you all, and, again, I hope you keep voicing your concerns and that SE takes care.
EDIT: Literally just noticed two posts above that there's a reply written toward my last post answering with the assumption that I implied way more extreme measures than I actually did. That has now happened twice from the same group of people presenting these arguments. Yeah, I'm sorry if I come across as rude at this point, but I super gotta take my own advice.
I really hope this isn't overstepping any boundaries and I absolutely would never dictate to someone else how they should make their character but curiosity got the better of me and I made a very rough version of your face 4 Aura girl because I was curious how smaller irises and altered makeup could work to make the brow appear angrier. It means no cute star facepaint tho sadly! These are obviously in conjunction with emotes and animations but now I'm convinced we need some kind of setting for a permanent facial expression emote because the difference the brow makes even in the first 2 frames of an emote makes a huge difference! Again I'm so sorry if this is weird I just wanted to share how much of a difference even a slight tweak to the brow angle can make ^^ /grovel

ESO have a nice costumization feature where one can equip a Personality.
Some do more than others, but many of them alters the way a character either stands, walks, runs and idle animations & facial expressions.
This could solve a lot of things and add a whole new way of people to express their characters personality.
However, I can already see that some might be locked behind raids/pvp/achivements and people will complain as to "why lock something behind something only x% of people play" reactions.
I'm really tired of hearing people say to adjust the lighting and gamma. I have. Many of us have. We've tried edits, angles, lights, settings, anything to make our characters look like themselves again, but nothing works. I made the settings the same and took identical screenshots in multiple lighting conditions in the current game and benchmark that are in the Au Ra changes thread to show that this is not a lighting issue. Changing the environment and and gamma setting doesn't do anything to fix the fundamental changes they made to my character's facial structure. Hyur players made it through relatively intact, judging by looking through all these threads. Many other races did not. Like these lips are just not even remotely close to each other.

My male middie had it bad. Real bad >.> Here
I've been wretching and crying for ten minutes looking at the lips on the right. They are an affront to common decency, truth, freedom, and the American way.
The lips on the left could win the EGOT. My word, they are the most beautiful shape I have ever seen.
they are. all intents and purposes, the same lips
DIFFRENCES
The "sharpness" of the lips are softnes due to more polygonal structures, same way an decagon is smoother than a square
lips are no longer glossy: i get this, i feel this is like, a majority of peoples issues. I dont dislike matte, but adding another seperate gloss option would go a long way
YES!! I picked FemRa face 3 lips 2 because I loved her lips so much! They're a huge charm point for me! I don't understand at all why they would so radically change the shape like this T-T
Excuse me? Are you trying to gaslight me? No, they are clearly not the same. Not even close. The look LOWER RES than the current lips. The shape of the top lip is much more pointy in the benchmark. The shape of the bottom of the top lip is completely flattened. The bottom lip is smaller and no longer protrudes over the shadow the lip casts, as seen in the 3rd row pic.
I'm sorry and I honestly don't mean to be rude, but that is just not how it works. "Smoothness" in 3D graphics has very, very little to do with actual poly counts. It has to do with things like shaders and spec maps.
In fact, I strongly doubt the poly count has been increased very much at all. This is not a dig at the graphics but simply, you don't need huge polycounts to achieve better results.
thats not entirely true either, diminishing returns are there for incresed count (and we know that more "bones" have been added to the mesh as well) and all of them work together hand in hand
but you really going to tell me that a enneadecagon is less smooth than a pentagon? or how, saw, solid snake mgs2 isnt smoother than solid snake circa mgs1? the later if that bastard hedbutted me with his sharp ass angled head id be brought in deep cuts.
me when i'm normal and lacking dramaticism
i'll give myself with this one to count this as a third whammy in my attempt to have a discussion with the nebulous group of people on the "other side" frequenting these posts, but like, come on, dude. lol. if my attempt at having you consider empathy resulted in "i have to kiss their ASSES?" you need to go shoot the shit more with your friends or somethin' instead of malding at embarrassing forum posts with your own embarrassing forum posts. it was more of a call to like, i don't know, not let it get under your skin.
i'm sorry for letting go of any refinement in my words but i don't plan to respond to this thread after this but come on guys. i promise the graphics update isn't going anywhere, it's okay. you don't have to be scared too. a full rollback is unheard of within this time frame of release.
i mean i'm equally embarrassing and at fault for attempting to think forum-goers in general could let go of hyperbole, so that is on me. anyway, time to return to pvp. game pvp, i guess. see you all in dawntrail or something
I think the benchmark character creator for dawntrail has (Character Lighting) turned on, because theres no way to adjust it in the benchmark settings, and the whole character lighting appearance is very similar to how it looks in the live game when turned to 100% in the graphical settings.
The first image (you can click them to make them larger) was taken in the current live game, ignore the cheek tattoo, but she looks cute right?
https://i.ibb.co/NnwZWj1/ffxiv-11102...4206-744v3.jpg
The second image was taken in the dawntrail benchmark. As you can see the character lighting is turned way up for some reason.
https://i.ibb.co/P66sqsf/dawntrailcatv3.jpg
But notice the eyebrows? Their grey and look weird, like they were stuck on her face, even in other lighting conditions it still looks grey and weird, compared to the first image.
The eyes look visbly more open, if you look at the pupils (the dark bit) their shown fully, whereas in the first image it is ever so slightly cut off at the top, giving the eyes a more almond like shape, and cuter imo compared to the update.
The eyes also have a fake eyeshadow above them, and a shadow covering the top of the eye itself, it looks weird and i don't like it personally. The eyes also look dead which alot of people have complained about.
The lips have no shine to them, very matte, unlike the first image, but that could be due to the character lighting being turned up, as it washes out gloss effects i think.
These things are very noticeable, there is no way you cannot see the differences between the images, the eyebrows especially, and the weird eyeshadows. My character looks way less cute in the update compared to live and i hope it gets addressed.
you can already do something like this in portrait, choosing different face expressions, seperate from the actual body emote you do.
I dont think its out of the realm of possibility for you to choose a select of facial expressions as a "resting" face at idle. thinks like, grin, smirk, furrow.
this is why i have a hard time empathizing with a lot of the unconstructive nonfeedback of "the personality changed!!!" when there isnt any personality in either before or after since everyone is set at a neutral idle anyways.
but have the ability to choose an actual expression would give a lot of personality to characters and would go a long way
I wish more people understood this. I'm not expecting there to be a rollback (though I hope they do some work to address complaints), but "liking the new better and being made to go back to something you still liked before, if slightly less" and "liking the old better and being made to change to something you don't like at all" are not comparable.
Character lighting should be off by default, i only use it really when i want to check colours and other details in the hairdresser mode, and glam reasons. It messes with the natural lighting otherwise, so hopefully they don't force it on with the update, because that would be baaad.
I think you're taking that post more seriously than I intended it to be. Because my first post in this thread said that if I have to see one more person call two very similar looking faces 'completely different' I would spontaneously combust.
You're not wrong though, reading these endless histrionics is doing my nut in. Time to dip I think.
My duskwight has the exact same issue with her eyebrows! They now have a smudge with a fully blonde streak drawn on top, when it used to have black in the mix making the whole brow look darker and more defined. Even when the hair is blonde it doesn't look good to fill in the brows with a white line, that's why I chose a face with dark brows in the first place.
Eyes are also dead looking because the top half is darker. If luster spots / light reflections are appearing right under the top lashes, light is clearly hitting that part of the eye. So why is it so dark?
https://i.postimg.cc/qR8WHfRf/DTbench-Eyebrows.png
Ah that's unfortunate... It looks like that black was supposed to suggest a shadow/3dimensionality and the color above it was supposed to be your actual eyebrow hair color :x
Now it looks like you just had the middle of your eyebrows shaved!! :x
(also, I think the top eyes look WAAAAAAAAAAAY better than the bottom eyes. They look way more alive than the cartoon "dot" shine with flat iris colors.)
I'm actually curious now what you think of the differences as highlighted in my posts here and here (the sliders show more examples)
Individually, the differences may be small, but add enough small differences together and you end up with an overall different impression, I would say.
I agree I can't see the differences as well in many other examples but I assumed it's because I haven't been looking at those characters as much (some are very obvious to me though, even if it's not my own character).
Whether other people /like/ the differences is sort of beside the point when people are arguing it no longer looks like their character, I think.
I think you did a great job personally, I was impressed. But if you keep engaging in these type of arguments - it will never end, as some past conversations here showed. It only invites more provocation as a result. A never ending cycle.
So it is obviously up to you, but ignore is a wonderful feature. I highly recommend.
Um... barring the obvious lighter eyebrows...
I think the new eyes and make your character look very pretty, more unique, and a lot less like a cartoon. The glow in the lower part give her so much character while the top darker part makes them look deeper and more interesting... but that's just me though.

Not a fan of the eye region change as well, eyebrows are too thin and shape changed.
Lost the overall sharpness of the eyes
Hm, you may be right. I suppose I was just curious how others perceived the differences I pointed out as for me they seem more obvious than others I've seen. Not like it's a competition of any kind of course, but I was wondering how much of it was the fact that I have known this character for literally 10 years xD
But I agree that perhaps such a discussion is off-topic. I do hope that if devs read this thread they will find the posts that are actually constructive.
Hello, I've had a male miqo main for a few years and I've used Face 1 for its soft features and to my eyes aesthetically appealing proportions of nose to mouth. At first glance of Face 4 I can already see that it's as if they took Face 1 and Face 4 together, and Face 4 lost alot of its unique identity in the process in my personal opinion. I gravitate toward's softer looks rather than harsh/angular ones- which to me is the main charm of Face 4. Even to someone like me who was never a fan of that face, I feel like the charming/defining factors have been lost/watered down.
I feel like alot of other faces have suffered the 'the uniqueness is gone' compared to other faces in the same race category. I see it too in face 4 for female miqos.
I have a thread with my complaints for Roegadyn, but I thought I'd compile it here too.
