The way to make people do dungeon / HNM content, while still keeping crafters and crafted gear viable, is to make them drop materials that can be crafted into high-end gear. This way you are not simply farming darklight that replaces any crafted item, and the crafter is left with nothing to do.

Personally, I don't really care all that much and think too much of this game is focused on crafters to the point that they can't properly balance it and keep it fun / motivating for people, but if they can balance it I think it would be really cool.

I agree. In regards to the hopeful NM/HNM system it would be nice to see a balanced drop system that benefits every type of player. Would be kinda neat if, lets say, an HNM dropped some nice gear, along with mats for crafters to craft some epic gear as well.

Also, 600 replies, 144+ likes, Dev's seem to be avoiding this thread!

The lack of response so far has to be 1 of 2 things.

1) They aren't going to do it, but do not want to say no flat out because of backlash they would get from the people in favor of HNMs.

2) They haven't had time to even look at it / give a definate answer yet because they are prioritizing other things first.

Honestly some of the ideas in the OP for different ways of spawning NMs seems very interesting and fun (sans the timmed HNMs but I've said my piece on that.) I just wouldn't hold my breath for a response.

We all see how purely instanced content is doing for FFXIV. It truly is thriving, is it not? The results of a player poll taken during a period of time unto which the total player population was under 5000 seems relatively irrelevant right now.

As for your "1.)" I'm glad that you know the will of Square-Enix, and have the ability to answer for them. Seems a little strange to avoid touching a topic that has obviously drawn alot of attention, but I never expected them to answer. I hope they will though.

As for your "2.)" They don't need to "look" at it right now. When i say look at it, I mean implement it. We all know something of this nature won't come until post 2.0. Simply judging off how absolutely barren this game is at the time being in terms on content, ignoring this kind of content would be well... ill-advised? (this is my opinion)

And my breath isn't held at all! I just hope SE will implement some ideas that might capture the hearts of people who loved their prior MMO. And if not? That's fine as well, I will happily take my business elsewhere and find a new MMO to play :)

But I loved FFXI, and I want to eventually love FFXIV. Hopefully Squeenix pulls though for us.

Well I know I voted for instanced content but I was thinking of all the lag and such when I did it. If the same question came up now, or an even better worded question, I would answer much more in favor of more openworld content.

On the topic of the poll, you are exaggerating the hell out of how low the numbers were during that poll. Neither one of us know the amount of people who voted in it. Even if it were only 5k people. 79% of 5k = 3,950. 3,950 dwarfs the 144 likes in support of this idea. Just saying...

I may come off as an ass sometimes, but I truely do hope you get a dev response of some kind to this thread eventually even if I don't like the answer.

Wierd how there is such a lack of reading comprehension when it comes to a year old player poll. Only quesion even relavent that I saw was a question about the targeting system and its relation to the content. No where did I see any question asking if players prefered instanced or non-instanced over one or the other.

Not to mention that poll was done with players that were freerolling, now that the payment time has left, a HUGE majority of the players that took that poll quit. Not to mention the word is out that the game has improved by leaps and bounds. This has caused an influx of new players. This is evenend by new threads and post in the "New Players section of the forums.

Actually, if you want to make this about numbers. There are 608 post in this thread. 88.9% of those post are PRO open world.
There are 19 threads debating instanced Vs. Open world content desires. 11 of them are threads that are PRO open world.

I can throw up just as many sideways numbers that do not accuratelly depict the direct factual opinions of the overall population as you can.

And have they changed the claiming system since that poll? If you had reading comprehension, you would understand the question is 100% condition on the reference to the claiming system. No where does it mention anything about HNMs. Pretty sure NMs, HNMs, and dungeons are very different.

This game will not survive (survive being a term used to describe how a lamb with a broken leg would survive in the wild) with only instanced content. We already know this is not the case however. Odin will not be instanced content that much has already been confirmed. What we need now is some insight into how far they are willing to take open world content for those who want it; no - need it.

They did change the claiming since then... that was around the time they modified it to allow you to claim more than one monster at a time. Before that leves were the main form of exp. After it people started the whole large claim + aoe kill parties. So yeah... they did change the claiming system after that poll was done. The new claiming system caused issues with people PL'ing and what not.

Agreed. The only thing I'm saying is that the opposition to it for the most part is only against the stupidly long timmers.

I don't feel like digging up the post but if I'm not mistaken they did confirm that they had plans to add dragons and other big mamajamas to the world. It was in a thread asking for dragons specifically. When I'm not solo'ing in XI I'll take the time to find it.

Just wanted to add this in case anyone hasn't added or noticed. They've pretty much already confirmed roaming HNMs/Primals (at least one) namely Odin. Check the 2.0 development pdfs.

I'm also not arguing against open world content. The ONLY thing I have ever argued against in this thread was unnecessarily long timmers. Even in the recent posts I've made tonight I've continually supported the system I just don't agree with it needing long timmers. Shall I go back over a year ago and pull out replies I gave in a similar topic? I believe my stance was the same back then. "Notorious Monsters should be Notorious because of how difficult they are, not because of how Notoriously late they are at spawning."

^ It's better than nothing, and it is supportive of big bad ass NMs. That is the only real response I've ever seen sans Odin as far as HNMs go. Though I could be completely missreading this, and it's only related to dungeon bosses being special mob types.

Thank you Captain Obvious. Thats mypoint. If they changed the claiming system after the poll (which we know they did) then the poll question is definently irrelavent.

Read the question outloud. Word for word.

You used that question previously, as well as others, to foolishly attept to claim that a large portion of active players want strictly instanced content.

Now when you read that outload to yourself, you did say the part about the claiming system change right? that was conditional to the question. Since the question was before the change. Now that its after the change, its no longer relavent. Because a condition of a claiming system change is the only way its relavent.

I appreciate what you said in red though. Its a little confussing at times, you come into the thread bashing the idea of HNMs, and now you specifically say your for Open NMs? I assume you mean HNMs?

Yet then you offer your support for them only conditionally of the fact that they only spawn under special circumstances?

It somewhat makes your position dificult to judge.

Are you for open world HNMs or against them?

The only thing I've ever bashed was the time it takes to respawn. This is just from within this last week.

Constructively adding to this topic, I fully agree with Patriarch in that it would be fun to have different ways to spawn NMs and HNMs. My favorite method being forced pops. Even if the pop item is so rare it takes you 5+ hours to farm, you are at least doing something for those 5 hours. You are also not blocking anyone else from fighting the NM for the rest of the day when you go fight it. Lotto spawns and conditional spawns would be fun too provided they aren't too ridiculous.

Every arguement I gave was against having these HNMs killable say once or twice every day. It was not against having HNMs. I thought I was clear, I guess I wasn't. :P

I think the whole back and forth crap we have going about the poll is just miscommunication. The way I read is is they asked "If we change the claiming system do you want more instanced content and less claim wars?" The players voted yes that if the claim system changed they want more instanced content over fighting for loot. From that response they then changed the claim system and went with the direction of less competive PVE. I just don't see them adding in anything near the 18~24 hour spawn timmers that xi had.

The direction they've been continuously going in is that of access to everyone. If you have the time to spend and you have the people you can try anything this game has to offer no matter what your schedule is.

I was going to stay out of this thread because I honestly lost my temper about half way through and rage posted since things can be a little one-sided unless you absolutely agree.

So don't take this as a rage post. I'm calmly and kindly asking you: What are you talking about?

That player's poll was conducted on February 2011 and the results were posted in March 2011. The changes to the claiming system came as a result in 1.19 in September 2011. Therefore, the contingency of "if the claiming system changes" already has been met.

By saying "yes" to Question 10, those voters were saying "if you do change the claiming system, I'd like to see content be instanced."

Why is it that you're suggesting that unless they change the claim system again they can't focus on instanced content?

Furthermore, I offer a post I made in another thread that I think is relevant here.

And let me be clear, I'm not against open world content. I'm only against fighting over claim and I think that's a side that deserves attention here.

This is why most things need to be instanced. The above is from SE's PDFs they released back in November.

The idea behind 2.0's sever structure is to allow a "worldless model" to allow players to use a content finder to team up with other players no matter what server they will be on.

The whole idea behind 2.0 is to make PvE a cooperative experience. But putting major content in the open world nullifies that entire concept. What's the point in restructuring your servers and engine to allow cross-server play if your content renders it useless?

In those same PDFs, SE listed plenty of PvP concepts they'll introduce in 2.0.

The growth of Free Companies, a Colosseum-style arena and battle for territories in Frontlines are just some of the things we can expect to allow us to compete against our rivals in 2.0.

No.

But it does mean major content should be where SE is designing it to be put in 2.0. And if in response to the infamous "Question 10" they decided to create an entire server structure for content finder and cross-server play because Yoshida took the response to mean "people want sought-after-loot in instances," then that's exactly what they should do.

But I think it's wrong to equate instances with "easy mode." Granted the game's current instances aren't exactly dynamic. But this is 1.xx, not 2.0. DD/AV/CC are proof of why we need a new engine. And Ifrit is proof of why we need a new server structure.

1.xx isn't meant to be a sign of what's to come. It's just short-term content to say "thank you" for sticking around. Kind of like half-priced appetizers before a gourmet meal.

I think that's why a lot of people seem to be "against" open-world content. It's not that we don't want an open world, we're just here to play the game SE's new team said they're giving us in 2.0.

I really hope the E3 press push includes some info on what instances will be like in 2.0. Yoshida made a large boast saying "there's also the added merit of enabling the level design team to work with a clear theme in mind, and create much more engaging and challenging content."

I also hope everyone gets a game they may enjoy. As has been mentioned, Odin is in the works as a "Wandering Primal." I just personally want to see SE do what they said they were going to do and keep the competition in PvE against the content and not other players.

My point is, that the question was based on a situation in which players had not experienced the change in the claiming system. Most were not even sure what the change meant. There mentality in answering the question was based on the premise of a system to come. Its not logical to "assume" that there answer is the same now with an actually different system. Particularly now with the influx of new players, and alot of old players gone due to the now monthly fee. We have a very different player base, and a diferent claiming system.

That doesn't read to be very supporting to me

Thats my point. At this point your promoting an question based on an unexperienced claim system. Which now, may well change the answer to that question by the current player base. A player base that is very different then the one back then. Between the now pay to play situation, and the clear influx of new players due to th word geting out about the games improvements.

Clearly we have a very different player base with different experiences. You cannot compare the two. Thats similar to making assumptions of a president being re-elected after he had a horrible 4 years even though they currently have a very low approval rating. All the while claiming you base your predictions of the re-election on a poll taken pre-election.

No it doesn't. Look at GW2. Look at Tera. Look at Rift. Both have co-op open world content as well as open world competitive content. The whole idea behind 2.0 is that 1.0 fking sucked.
Restructuring servers is not solely for cross-server co-op play. It needed to happen regardless of what content they are adding into the game. The point is they can do MORE with upgraded servers and they will be doing it.

"Most" things don't need to be instanced, there needs to be a perfect balance between open world and instanced content. You will always lose players from one side of the coin or the other if you only offer a single type. FFXI only (really) offered open world competition and lots of people hopped over to WoW because of it. WoW only (really) offered instanced content and lots of FFXI people stayed on FFXI. Only now are we really starting to see a merging of both content types in some next-gen MMOs coming out.

If Yoshida (and SE) we're smart they'd use this second chance, this breath of life that was given to XIV, and create content that caters to both crowds as much possible to rake them in. They are introducing pvp into a FF title which is...OK I guess - it's not really SE's strong point. I think they would have been better off putting that time and effort into making sure their PvE rooted fans we're happy first thing.

Sephrick, welcome back! You make a solid point, but I wish SE would rethink their strategies and try their best to make the bestof both worlds. As Richard said, if you design the game solely based off instances you are going to stave off a large amount if players from your company's prior MMO, which seems so backwards to me.

I know it will never happen, but I would love to see the same poll taken again now, and see how people respond after experiencing FFXIV's instances system.

Instances worlds, and open worlds need to coexist. Let us be able to get lost in the sheer amount of content the game can contain. Who knows... The instances coming in 2.0 could be amazing, I just want the open world to be there too.

No it doesn't. Look at GW2. Look at Tera. Look at Rift. Both have co-op open world content as well as open world competitive content. The whole idea behind 2.0 is that 1.0 fking sucked.
Restructuring servers is not solely for cross-server co-op play. It needed to happen regardless of what content they are adding into the game. The point is they can do MORE with upgraded servers and they will be doing it.

"Most" things don't need to be instanced, there needs to be a perfect balance between open world and instanced content. Ah, back on a PC I can actually post!

It is pretty interesting seeing people from multiple MMO genres merging into FFXIV. People are pretty closed-minded on alternative forms of content that is new/foreign to them. You hit it on the nail, people have been going on about how 2.0 is going to enhance the Instanced Raids we have. It will also greatly enhance the possibilities for great open world action.

Regardless, its just hard to fathom even after all this time why SE strayed from the beaten path they had set themselves in FFXI. I think however, that between all the great ideas mentioned so far for the compromises of Instanced Content meets Open World content, that SE could make a wonderful game. I am highly anticipating 2.0, and for the sake of my future subscriptions, I surely hope that they pull through!

Also, PvP; I'm intrigued to say the least. Ballista was (lol) kind of fun, I'm ready to see what kind of PvP they will bring into FFXIV.

I think HNM's follow the same group as normal nm's for devs I thought players made the term HNM up very much like Af when the devs keeps saying the gear we got isn't AF >.>.

The JP community coined the term HNM but I highly doubt that they received the same "treatment" and design as regular NMs from the dev team in FFXI. They are in a league of their own which is why they are considered "HNM".

Dunno if this was suggested (too many pages), but should there be an ice cave of some sort there could be an nm that spawns as a reflection on the walls of ice which can be attacked to lure the nm out so that it can be battled.

If the party/alliance fails to damage the ice within a certain amount of time, the shadow could despawn and reappear 20min later. If the party/alliance deals enough damage within a given time period, the monster spawns just outside of the ice and can be battled like any other NM. Win/lose, the shadow could respawn 2-4 hours later. While the shadow is out and about, it could mess with unsuspecting adventurers in some way (maybe use an ice breath attack?) :D

Condition spawn : Rukkirrii spawns in Sphoshae when there is a player level 25+ in the dungeon.
Level : (matches highest player's level inside Sphoshae) + 3 additional levels
Behaviour : Hunt down the highest level player (minimum of level 25), then the next highest level player and so on until no player level 25+ are found in the dungeon. (despawns then)

I like this idea!

I think it would be interesting to have an NM that hunts YOU. For example, one that lures weary travelers in with a will-o-the-wisp type light. Similar to the reflection, you would have to be paying attention to see it, as it wouldn't be targetable. It could appear randomly to you in the distance at night. If you approach it it recedes and it gradually leads you toward an encounter with the creature who is lying in wait to attack you. It should soloable only with much skill since, after all, you're the one being hunted.

Some of my other favorite ideas from this thread have been the Skyrim-esque dragons that you would have to follow around until they land. Or they could come down to attack you if you wander unwittingly beneath them. Similar to the UFOs in FFXI's sea. Also, having to "track" your prey via randomly placed ???s throughout the zone that lead you toward the next one. For example, footprints, gnawed sheep carcasses, etc. These are all bot-proof, fair claim ideas.

Let's stop arguing amongst ourselves and start presenting as many good ideas as possible if the devs are listening.

Edit: I like your idea too, Nakiamiie! Maybe it should be an NM that only spawns once every couple of days or something since it would be annoying getting attacked every time you went in.

By the way, wasn't the term for "HNM" in FFXI known as "Hyper Notorious Monster" ?
"Highly Notorious Monster" doesn't make sense, and it just sounds silly.

When they added Dodore and such they was just called NM's by the Dev team which means they basically fall in the same category. HNM is just a player term, all nm's in the game are just NM's to the dev team and nothing more.
