I haven't had the chance to try Ifrit yet, but I did do moogle with jobs, they seem to work pretty well once you adjust to how jobs work in exsisting strats compared to classes.

After reading through this topic for a short minute, I completely agree with this. Jobs are cool, I like 'em, I'll keep 'em...BUT...Jericho is right. It sounds like it makes more sense if the class split up into 2 jobs. Having the option to switch into a more "special" class just seems a bit redundant, regardless of how different it is.
Being able to switch from GLA into either PLD or NIN, depending on which is needed more, would make more sense. Please don't get on me for using NIN as the other job, just thinking of another tanking class for sample purposes. Could even have THF as a new class and it could split into ASN or NIN. But yeah, you guys get the point.
I just think giving ONE more option works better for variety of how the class develops, instead of just becoming a Super Class instead. Plus it works more like FFT, how the jobs branch off into other jobs...which I thought was one of the coolest things about the series.
What do you guys think?
Meh, they've already said they will release more jobs, some of which will be based on two classes even. These were just the initial release.
Yeah, well, my NIN example was a bad example, lol that's why I asked not to quote me on it...because you're right, I didn't take into consideration the fact that GLA has all kinds of shield and defending abilities. I have feeling that you think I was giving example of having WAY off jobs from the class and other job. But that's the exact opposite of what I meant. I meant 2 different jobs, but still mesh correctly with the class. A better example would be like CON becoming WHM or SMN. Or THM becoming BLM or BLU. Or ARC becoming BRD or RNG. I meant keeping the jobs similiar, as in that they still have use of their classes abilities, plus a new set, like they do now...but just a choice between another job. That's all. GLA is a tough one I guess, but I'm sure they'd figure it out.
I really do like your idea of being able to tweak the ability according to how you want to play the class. That's an interesting idea.
Aye Job classes improves their overall powers in their specified field of expertise, however at the sacrifice of flexibility and versatility. Using your example of kiting as a GLA vs. PLD just having the ability to use Second Wind to heal yourself in the King Mog fight makes a world of difference, especially where you can't cast while moving anymore.
Personally, I'm content with the current system. Not because I don't want more defining Jobs later on (Lord knows I want Red Mage), but one of the biggest flaws of FFXI with it's job/sub system was it had too many jobs and not enough unique or adequate roles to properly fill each one, which led to alot of job favoritism and imbalance which still greatly plagues FFXI. However with the current system you have only a few predefined roles, no matter if your playing GLA or PLD your still getting a tank, CON or WHM your still getting a healer, MRD/WAR your getting a berserker DD, LNC/DRG Tactical DD, THM/BLM Nuker, and so on. The classes/jobs might be uniquely a little different from each other to differentiate themselves apart, but they aren't so different that their roles are separated.
The only way I'd ever want classes abolished is if thy adjusted jobs to give the same amount of freedom as classes have. Beign and dragoon and being abble to equip abilities from every other class with the exception of job specific abilities.
I think the issue right now is that the classes themselves don't always lend themselves to much for variaty in the "Job" section in the future. Gladiator has tank skills, what good what that be for a dark knight? But what sense would it be for it to branch of something strange like Lancer?
I think the class system will only serve to stifle the introduction of new jobs and their abillities.
We will see how they work with it in the future, but I'm personally looking forward to them nixing the class system eventually when the Job system is fleshed out enough. Wether this will happen or not I am not certain but I feel as it stands now the system obviously needs some tweaks and I'm looking forward to what those tweaks end up being.
I think a Drk could make sense as a sword/shield user. It could be a tank that takes more damage, but holds hate better, and keeps itself alive with absorb spells, enfeebling, and damaging/healing spikes, as well as delivering more damage than a Pld (but not quite on par with a normal DD).
I do agree though. The current class system makes it tough. But there are definitely job combinations that could work if they decide to keep this route. Arc obviously flows well into Rng. Mnk could flow into a Dnc type char... Or.... Pup. It COULD work. I prefer consistency over them releasing more jobs with a mish-mash of skills taken from a mishmash of classes. But it might have to happen.
All the talk of Drk, i'd want it to branch for mrd with maybe lnc and pgl skills, the high offense and terrible defense jobs. Give it the ability to beat the crap out of things while sacrificing any/all of the hardiness that the mrd has now.
