If they want to make Hien's stubble unisex, I won't complain.
They don't usually gender lock FF series protagonist gear anyway, so it might actually be the girls who get shorted since they get the protagonist's outfit but not Lunafreya's beautiful dress. Then again, the girls who want to wear something approaching "practical" and "not waifu dress-up" in appearance might be happy. There will be someone who feels the need to complain for one reason or another.
I'm not certain if this is the right place to ask/talk about male glams, but they just..don't really have many great hair styles, from what I've seen. I'd love to see some longer styles, like the ones on the guys in Hakuouki or Touken Ranbu.
So, in light how how the bunny outfit turned out...I have tweaked the title to place emphasis on a desire for more masculine looking outfits/hairstyles. This is by no means an attempt to stifle development for feminine/androgynous options in the future...since variety is the spice of life, after all! Yet based on the responses to this thread alone it's clear a significant number of people want stuff that is more 'masculine' but still suggestive and attractive looking.
It's almost the opposite problem that I have with a lot of Western games. For the most part you can only be a hypermasculine line-backer with watermelons in your arms in games made by western devs. But in XIV I am having a hard time being "cool" as a caster/healer... I think we have enough androgynous gear for the time being, bring on more outfits that highlight masculinity!
And I'm kind of glad the bunny suit is finally going to be resolved but I'm not really happy with the results. Power to the people who like to cross-dress in that way but... I just wanted to look a little sultry instead of like a cis guy's idea of a funny transsexual joke.
I'd like better options for male casters. Changed to female a while ago because I was tired of only having 1 decent caster set to wear for the last 4 years.
I'm gonna quote this because Nicodemus summarize perfectly what I want more for male glamour.
Also it seems to me good/cool looking male outfits are very often made unisex. I'm slightly annoyed tbh. I don't mind giving female characters the option to dress up practically for battle though. It just saddens me that males have less exclusive glamours to be proud of.
What does everyone think of the bunny suit?
I’m gonna get the ears definitely. Maybe the tights too.
I don’t know about everything else though. I actually wasn’t expecting an exact copy.
I don't dig the fishnets and the shoes though I'll probably still get it if only to have that +1 tick on their logs so that they'll see interest. My guy alts also have enough MGP to burn on it so that'll be that. As to what I'll actually wear, the ears definitely, probably the tops. Sleeves depends on how they'll look though being the closest we'll ever get to the Thavnairian sleeves I can see people using it too. Will probably combo it with the Yafaemi healer and caster pants for those classes, probably that Ruby cotton boxer-shorts for the healers, but will need to find something for my tanks which'll probably run this more. But as was beaten to death, with the exception of a unique vest-like top, the look I'm after can easily be recreated in-game, so I mostly needed the ears. Maybe the sleeves, we'll see.
I'm mostly over the initial disappointment, which is really "not what I hoped for" rather than "it's bad". Ultimately this is kind of ridiculously huge to have SE deliver something like that, too bad it'll probably be reduced to a joke by both the playerbase and most likely the game itself by being used for lawls in a Hildy quest or something. At this point that's what rubs me off the wrong way the most, like when Hildy wore a dress and that was supposed to be the punchline of that scene.
Well, I just hope when 4.3 arrives we don't end up with another two feminine/androgynous hairstyles. With glamour being such a large part of the game it's starting to get a bit irritating to feel like I'm missing out. It never used to be that way, either. Yet there's been a notable shift away from embracing masculinity.
With WoW actively embracing things like Allied Races as a clever workaround for 'more options' for playable races and customisation options I have to admit I feel like FFXIV needs to do more. Even requests for simple things like more facial hair options seem to fall on deaf ears.
I think the issue with males isn't glamours...
it's just customisation in general it's quiet difficult so people overall just lean towards females and I for 1 have a keen eye for dressing females, the same can't be said for guys sadly, the glamours and the guy has to be a perfect match to the glamour, for example hmmm Snow cosplay! it looks a ton better on a Miquote male than it does a Roe or Au ru
yea though Ninja outfits are cool in game, I hope there's more edgier super hero themed outfits for guys.
Some of the gears looked rather 'soft' or 'gentle' looking to be cool.
I am having trouble trying to picture what this would look like on male Au Ra...
Oh Allied Races, how bittersweet I feel about thee. Requests for facial hair options I can feel on both sides. I've been asking since 2005 for eyebrows on male Nelfs with a clean shaven look. ;u;
But yeah, while I have my tiffs with WoW gear, I can usually get a set that looks fine on guys there for casters. Here it can be more difficult for DoM jobs, well, for me anyway.
The Republican set being one of the worst examples of the above. Their design aesthetic has gotten worse over time for DoM sets. BLM and RDM get decent sets for male toons, but the shared ones with other DOM tend to be abysmal, nevermind the healer sets, barring AST.
Their scales are meant to be their facial hair. It's even lined in such a way.
I'll probably just use the bent bunny ears on my male characters and that's it. If I even resub again.
It doesn't really matter if it's a Japanese game. That's just a defeatist attitude - other people may enjoy rolling over and offering themselves up to be screwed over, but I'm not one of them. So I will post about this day in, day out for as long as it takes to be heard. I urge others to do the same and to remain constructive whilst doing so. Only then will our voices be heard...even if it only results in a bone being thrown our way every now and then to shut us up.
JP devs are perfectly able to design male outfits, as they do in other games and as they also do in anime, so this is a bizarre assertion. SE has consistently done so throughout many of its games. That being said, if they want some 50% of their income to evaporate, they can ignore their NA/EU audience, and the fact that the char demographics are split evenly more or less between males and females, with the predictable exceptions of au ra and miqo'te.
However, if they're ok with adding blatantly female outfits for males solely due to a tiny but vocal subset of the NA community, they can listen to those with more reasonable demands, too.
Just wondering about the "extra hairstyles" since people keep bringing this up. I only started playing at about the time Stormblood was released, so I'm not sure how many hairstyles have been added to the original list, but I assume the last several on the list are 'late additions' (as they're unisex and available to all races) and it seems only the last couple have been really feminine.
From the previous patch, the twin-buns style is feminine but the spiky ponytail looks very 'male anime character'. The two before that also look like (more normal) male hairstyles, and several before it look unisex but not feminine.
Though interestingly, both the hairstyles from the recent patch got used on male characters....
(Personally I'd like more 'longer hair' options for male characters. Even the official character designs keep using that same one nice shoulder-length hairstyle on multiple characters, so clearly they need more options.)
That could be the reason for them not releasing any male hairstyles with stubble! (And I do suspect it would have to be added as part of the hairstyle, because you don't seem to be able to get new options for other face elements.) Which in turn might be why they haven't released Hien or Nero's hairstyles.
And they're giving us the bunny outfit for male characters, does that make it masculine? (well depends on how you wear it I guess but you get my point). Look also at how they advertised it - on female characters, and you're going to be hard pressed to find too many male playable characters who actually use it. Not saying they don't exist, just not half as much as female charas. Also not the best connotation when both those male charas are antagonists at best, villains at worst.
Then they could add it to at least selected races and leave it as one of those racial differences people seem to want to see more of. Hyurs, Lalafell, Elezen iirc, to name a few, all have existing facial hair slots. They could add those as new options to an already existing customization option, since we know they don't want to add new options altogether, but adding more options to an existing category should be easy enough - they do it all the time with the hairstyles.Quote:

Hien's hairstyle already exists in the game though? You mentioned it yourself, while not as exaggerated, it's basically the same style.Quote:

Ah, I wasn't saying they're masculine - just that it is, as I said, interesting that they chose to give both those styles to male characters. Whether it's a "no really, they're unisex!" attempt or just showing their taste in character design.
It seems like it should be easy enough to add extra options to an existing category, but they don't - whether they just won't do it or actually can't.Quote:

Some customisation options like hairstyles are "pick one thing out of this list" but others like facial features (including scars and the existing facial hair) are "here are five design elements, turn on the ones you want". And they don't seem to ever add new ones, plus there have been in-game opportunities to get new hairstyles but not anything else. That's why I'm saying that I suspect they may only be able to add new designs via hairstyles and not the other list.
People are asking for his hair specifically. (Usually in conjunction with "why isn't his costume available on MogStation yet?") That's why I mentioned it.Quote:

During one of the early Halloween events they actually took the time to add a couple of new face paint options...but other than that every new customisation option has been some manner of hairstyle. We also used to get more than just two new hairstyles per patch but that has been reduced.
I feel like it's won't, to get around a lot of complications with the existing system. Mind, it's not really complications, mostly hassles. Like you said, hairstyles are mutually exclusive to each other. You don't need to worry about how well they look with each other. Facial features, be it scars, marks, what hair options we do have, etc, they can stack, so they probably don't add to those to avoid clashes. Even the facial hair options we have now can come together, lord knows I use the 'goatee' option often enough. You can wear either separately, but they were obviously designed to come together and form a very specific whole. Suddenly, adding extra options to that would open up options they'll feel worried about how good they look... which is where they're going too far and I say to hell with it. First, it is more than possible to keep stubbles while certain areas are thicker. And if it looks bad...? To hell with that, it's on the player
Just wanted to clarify that I'm not saying there *isn't* a problem with the hairstyle balance, because other people say that there is, but then again I'm not personally seeing it and wondering why other people do.
It also occurred to me since my previous post that it may be harder to come up with more unique male hairstyles that are 'unlike the existing designs' but won't be perceived as unisex/feminine? (At least I struggle when drawing original characters.) But I'm happy to be proven wrong there.
From what I can see, there are already quite a lot of variations on short hair in the character creator already, whereas more elaborate styles are more likely to involve longer hair, which is seen as feminine.
They can start by race unlocking half the Au Ra hairstyles >_>
All I can say is that I'm glad the best hair has existed since 1.0 because there isn't anything else that I think looks good on my character. The two buns, or the princess hair (whatever it's called), just look silly on a guy that's built like a brick outhouse.
Less-feminine long hair would be nice, but I would also like to see more extra-short styles, as well. The closest we can get to a high-and-tight is Conrad's hair, but that's a little too... fancy for my tastes. I'll also throw in my support for more facial hair options. Where's the glorious Tom Selleck 'stache, or mutton chops, or the neatly-trimmed full beard?
Well, I'm going to give this another nudge...
Hien's outfit was added to the game as of today...but it did not come with his hairstyle as a customisation option which is what a lot of people wanted as expressed multiple times within this thread and others like it.
