Hoooo boy I feel you, after feeling a little sour with the live letter, I'm so ready for any additional lore we can get.

Oh, we're still posting Au'ra pictures? Neat, I just finished working on mine. Perhaps a little obvious, but I went with Green Eyes because I main Healer (Definitely picking up AST as soon as I can), and I just felt Blond went good with it.
The end result was slightly creepier than I had intended, but I'm actually more satisfied with that than my original intent (which was to go cutesy). I'm also a little happy I took some of the cutesiness out of Face 1, since that's by far my favorite face.

I've still never seen official confirmation that the Au Ra Naming Conventions are coming out late May. Does anyone have a direct link?
Nope Nope. I went through every page today, and the Mod Response was confirming a couple of things that everyone already knows; while saying that he would be defenstrated if he leaked any lore information at this point in time. It was later on that someone else brought up the "Late May" was brought up by a Poster later; I can't remember if a direct link or quote was provided though.
Well It's bound to be less than three weeks. Because early access starts in four. Keep your knickers on and wait. No point in complaining about it. If fern had his way we'd get filed in on a lot of things I'm sure. But then Yoshi-P and the others would probably cut his wings off and feed him to a Chimera.
It was mentioned during the Lore panel section of the Nico Live event around April 25th, after all of the picture links in there.
Well, maybe. I mean I understand why they can't release important information, but Auri naming conventions are rather inconsequential and we already know the clans' general demeanor and can even tinker around with their appearances in the Benchmark. I can't really think of a reason why they're still withholding the naming conventions... not that it's a terribly huge deal, I just don't understand at this point.
That said, I'm hoping it'll be tomorrow (today), but if not then soon™.
Uhh and I still couldn't decide if I want a male or female AU Ra. And the clock is ticking.
hey anyone !
Someone understand what they wrote about naming conventions? It's a today-japanase-post.
I google translated it and it seems to be saying "Sorry we want to release it to the world all at once and have been delayed , there is no excuse."
I guess they still have issues with low numbers of translators.
It says,
For this (Au Ra naming conventions), we are trying to prepare for simultaneous worldwide publication. Since it's a priority to work on the translation of [Heavensward] to get ready for its release, we decided to forego the release (of the naming conventions) in late May.
Everyone was looking forward to this, so actually there is no excuse.
Once the publication date and time is finalized, we will inform you again, but for now we ask that you please wait a while.

Here's the post.
So the press embargo for the Nantes event has been lifted, and I'm a bit puzzled by some info coming from one of the interviewers who attended. Here is a link to his reddit post, which contains links to his official articles: http://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/commen...twitch_stream/
I found this exchange in the comments section:
"You might want to read again information on the Au Ra and fix your article. It has been explained multiple times that their motif is "Demons", not "Dragons". If their origins actually had lore confirming dragon involvement, you can bet they'd NEVER find their way even close to Ishgard." -commenter
"I was told they're of reptilian origins by the staff at the event, but I do know it's only speculated that they have dragon-like origins. I thought this was the universally accepted theory. I've retracted the statement relating to dragons regardless. No point spreading misinformation." -author
Are they demons or not? Reptiles but not dragons? It's probably already been mentioned, but their scale patterns look very similar to the succubus markings. I was finally sure that we knew what they were, but now I'm doubtful once again.
Disappointing, but understandable. I suppose Heavensward is going to have a long script and that takes priority. Even so, I didn't think it took that much effort to translate the Auri naming conventions; none of the current ones are terribly long (except the Roegadyn, and that's because they have their own pseudo-language).
Ah well. >_<
In Before, Xaela have their own Pseudolanguage in naming conventions.
I'm assuming they're dragonpeople, but they possess the look of something more along the lines of dragon-demons. If that makes any sense, lol.
Or it could be like they originally said some time ago: that the Raen are draconic and the Xaela are demonic.
I think there's been a misunderstanding lost in translation somewhere. When the demon motif was mentioned, Yoshi-P was in the middle of making a Xaela.
I have my personal suspicions about this (intentional) confusion, but we'll have to see if I'm right. I may still be off the mark.
(For the curious:I suspect what's going on is that there's going to be a third, non-playable faction of Au Ra in Dravania, "Au Ra Dravan" or somesuch, who'll be part of the Horde, in the same way Garlean Hyur have examples in-game but aren't playable, and everyone, perhaps Yugiri included, is going to have to deal with the possibly-secret history of the Au Ra and their actual relationship to dragons.
Yeah, I'm still harpin' on that, but it's just gonna be SO WEIRD if the Au Ra aren't a big NPC presence in Heavensward in some way.)
Man, now I'm curious more than anything else. Like you pointed out, the naming conventions of most of the races take up maybe a page or two, at most, of standard A4 text. Any one could be translated, fully, with localization cross-reference, in a few hours at most. And the fans have already partly figured out the Raen naming scheme.
What on earth could be causing such a delay in preparing the naming scheme posts? Is the game itself just keeping Koji & co. that busy (in which case, get excited and also mail them pizza and beer out of gratitude please), or are the Xaela conventions that complicated?
Both?
Probably a little bit of both. They do have to translate Heavensward's script into like 5 languages, and that is a LOT of text to translate and correspond with across that many languages.
That said, they said back in March they had the naming schemes fully realized, so I don't imagine it would take that long to translate them. I just want to be able to name this tough cutie:
P.S. I really will send them a pizza if they get it out before the end of the month.
I'm frustrated but at the same time I know it's not a top priority, and that they're swamped with working on Heavensward and doing interviews and conferences and whatnot.
Still, I don't like broken promises/official statements being changed. ;n;
According to the Gamewatch interview the females Au Ra were supposed to be the kind of women you want to protect while the male were supposed to be more dark, they didn't plan to have a succubus kind of female Au Ra at first. ( http://game.watch.impress.co.jp/docs...26_703330.html )
The emotes seems to make the males looks like they are happy young men and the women looks very shy.
Yeah I actually replied to that first person, and I'm both hoping and thinking the "Au Ra have nothing to do with dragons" is a red herring/false information to keep us from guessing too much about the story or any Au Ra characters. I really wouldn't mind if they were just reptilian in nature either, it just feels weird having a "warrior of light" that has demonic origins. And honestly the succubus scale pattern is notable, but hardly anything to make too much of a note about due to the comparison basically stopping there and the lack of any humanoid dragons to make a comparison to.
I'm sorta hoping it's the opposite case just to sort of add to the information of the nature of dragons and demons in this universe, like perhaps some voidsent are capable of redemption and good from their nature becoming a "dawn father" while "dusk mother" could be noting some dragons like that really creepy looking one in AK HM or the one at the end of the benchmark.
Also StarDrake, I really dig your theory and hope you're right, especially with that side note in mind!
Well that's just kind of depression as someone who wanted to roleplay as a tough and independent Au Ra girl >.>
I still really wish they did a Highlander/Midlander split with the Xaela/Raen. It makes so little for a warring nomadic group to have girls that look like "the kind of woman you want to protect" as opposed to ones who can hold their own and defend themselves.
For the sake of saving time, the colloquial term for "the kind of [person] you want to protect" is moe.
That said... it is possible to make a non-moe Au Ra woman without resorting to Face 4 / Eyes 3. Takes time and a little effort, but it's not impossible.
Besides, even if they've got a moe appearance that says nothing about their personality or abilities. Just look at Yugiri - she's on the pretty end of the scale, but still arguably the best Ninja in all Eorzea at the moment (though that isn't saying much). Heck, the Lalafell all look like Precious Moments figurines, but we know the Ul'dahn Dunesfolk are (almost) all ruthless capitalists.
Don't judge a book by it's cover, blah blah blah...
Also, you can get around the character limit by editing in the extra text a second after posting it.
EDIT
Like this, f'ex:
(The left is still a bit cute, but it's hard to remove all traces of cuteness without Face 4. Their body language is intrinsically cute as well, but... can't do anything about that.)
I dunno, when I saw Yugiri I kinda saw her a little less "moe" more just just really relaxed looking? Sorta like women in the 60's and 70's did with their more "natural" look.
I think I went with Face 4 Eyes 4 and I'm sorta satisfied with the look, trying to prevent a sorta passive pissed off look. I just primarily don't want the basis for the girl's of a race to be "moe", rather "This is the race's base, this is the modification we're adding to it to make it different", otherwise you get a situation in which there is 30 flavors of "moe" and 2 flavors of tough. Not to mention "moe" is probably why Au Ra girls can't be taller than 5'2 which still frustrates me >.> I mean, I know they can be tough personality and look cute, but it's a little silly that the proud tribal warrior women are also "moe".
I'm aware :P I've just accepted that 9/10 my posts will be 400+ words over the limit, cut off early and edit it with that in. Hopefully SE will increase the character limit and daily post limit so I won't have to worry! 1071 characters over this time :P Oops!
I really don't see how face 4 isn't cute... And somehow it bothers me, because that's the face I've already chosen.

See? She's cute!
Got the exact opposite problem! Thought face 4 was the mean one, then everyone has it going "It's sooo cute!"

I just wish I could crank her height from 5'2 to 6'0 at least.
Am I moe uguu~
http://i.imgur.com/X0HN5kR.jpg
I'm going to be keeping the name I've always had for my character, but even I'm disappointed that the naming conventions have been delayed. My curiosity is in overdrive and I was looking forward to reading a little more about the Au-ra.
Oh well, soon. :)
Draw them however you wish, that doesn't change the fact that Auri ladies were clearly designed to be moe or bishoujo.
Uguu~
The hairstyle really makes the look. The bangs covering the eye gives a mysterious charm I can't quite place ^_^
Yeah Mahri, while I dig the rad art, Cilia is right, Au Ra girls were designed to be "moe", much to my disappointment. Kinda wonder how many folks would make Xaela if they followed a more highlander esque appearance over midlander
I must not self-deny. I will learn to accept this. I will be the right kind of moe.
e. in seriousness I'm okay with it. I fancy a bit of bishoujo elegance, and I've got the perfect glamours in mind to really bring it out. It's the aforementioned lack of muscle sliders that's the only thing that get to me, and maybe could stand to be taller too.
I'll be your anime big sis (there's a word for this, I'm not gonna look it up) even at 5'2".
Sadly, no matter how many pictures I see, I have not seen one that didn't look tiny, waifish, and moe like. Not what I like to play as, I'd love to see them similar to the males in height and musculature. :(
Maybe 'cuz it's literally impossible to make a female Au Ra who isn't tiny and waifish? It's possible to downplay the ~uguu, but their body shape, size, and language just don't lend themselves to being big and burly like the males.
I like to think I've made a more realistically beautiful image, but I guess not :(
