Players don't always know what's best. Just ask Blizzard/WoW.

I want a vote connected to log in. a vast chunk of the people who play never come to the forums, so the discussion is horribly skewed. (option 2 ftw)
This is so true.
If you have ever changed schools, jobs, communities, or countries, you will know how hard it can be to come into a new social system where everyone else already has established connections, heirarchies, feuds, etc.
Option 4 puts everyone on equal terms.
This would never make a difference no matter how it plays out. It makes no difference between two servers combining and LS collectively transferring and mixing it up in other servers. There is always going to be the potential of them clashing with one another.
This sounds like something from someone who has either lost touch with this community or comes from a server with a low population. So far, all of the major LS on MY server want to stay together. Which is another thing... it's not going to stop most of the server transferring to the same place. There really is not much difference in that sense. In other senses, as in the inactive players, option 2 is kinder to them. Everyone speaks of 2.0 and being able to transfer, but what about the time between then? They need to be segregated and live out the last days until 2.0 on a server filled with unfamiliar faces due to this insufferable dev team making unintelligent decisions? Uh, no. Think again.
I only have one thing I am unhappy with in all of this. The priority in naming conflicts grants a mule character which is never played, but is playable in the sense that it is paid for, priority over a character that someone actively plays. If I actively use a character every day I play then why do I have to change my name to accommodate a character that hasn't been used in a year? It seems to me like the methodology chosen has the virtue of being simple, but lacks any acknowledgement of the effort put forth in developing a character.
For that matter if national governments, phone companies, and postal services can keep track of hundreds of thousands of people who share the same name why isn't it possible to manage this in an MMO? I don't buy that a mail system or a communication system can't work unless everyone has a unique name because in truth they work everyday in a world with 7 billion people.
So lets say server 4 is very popular, LSs from three other servers all end up choosing it, your LS wants to go there with the rest from your server, you sign up, theres 10 spots left before server is full, and your number 11, {that's too bad}.
While I do not hope anyone gets into that kind of situation, I also won't pity anyone here who does who where in favor for this system.
I'm sad to see the playerbase for XIV include so many people who barely can see past their own nose, instead being content with a system that beneifits themselves over a system which would benefit themselves in the just as much but at the same time also work alot better for more people and reduce the risk of being seperated from friends for thoose who care about their current in game relations.
Honestly you have to agree that its very silly for a developer to go "hey could you guys sort this out? We think you should be able to come to a solution!"i.e have every server talk among themselves to decide which will be their "default" server.
Is that the responce you want for future issues like lag or perfomance problems "hey could you discuss with fellow players to find a solution to your problem, thanks!"
It's by far not the end of the world but its still an important topic to discuss as far as theese forums go.
And honestly though with this kind of attitude I dont belive XIV will ever be a big contender in the MMO market, wouldn't be surprised if populations ends up around pre p2p after 2.0 has hit, and that be sad cause I still belive this game could have so much potential.
It happened in Aion that used the very system you advocate. I should know, I was one of those that got left behind when I wanted to merge with my friends and why I no longer play on their official servers. So using it as a reason when it could happen regardless of how they decide on server transfers is intellectually dishonest, stupid, and pathetic.
People are worried that a server might fill up before they can get on with their friend because of unbalanced migrations.
So to overcome this my suggestion would be to have a world pass purchased from the adventureres guild. On the world pass you can choose a number 1-20. So lets say my linkshell decided to all choose number 1, then i can tell friends on other servers to also choose number 1. This would guarantee you all a place on the same server 1 (which is unamed for now) until the certain limit of world passes runs out. There can be a option to change number at any time before, in case it does run out.
Lets assume the active player base is 10,000 and the sever limit is 2000 andthe max world passes per number is 1,000.
If at the deadline numbers 1 and 18 have 500 subscribers but numbers 2, 3 and 12 have only 300 subsribers each. All number 1+18 can be in one separate world and 2+3+12 and 100 randoms can be grouped together into a different world, hence making even distribution, so by splitting it into sections initially you can overcome congestion issues with a few servers filling up completely first and the rest remaining dead, while also allowing 50% of free server space. This way there will be no resultant poplated/unpopulated server, which is what SE is trying to achieve from all this.
In the case that a player has not purchased a world pass then they would be evenly distributed across other servers, possibly matching up EU/NA/JP players. If they ended up away from a friend or LS or just recently re-activated then they can request a world invite by making some sort of in game cross-server message to a PC (one time only and only available to those who didnt get a world pass and the LS leader or whoever could accept or refuse).
I wonder which of us is out of touch. What is your basis of comparison, might I ask?
You say that it doesn't matter because everyone is going to transfer to the same place anyway. Then you say you want option 2 because it is "kinder" to the people who want to stay with the same group. Which is it going to be?
Option two is just a blanket merge, and that is unkind to everyone who is getting merged into a larger server. From what I can tell, you don't like option 4 because you want to force the community to stick together for your own selfish desire to resist change.
Option 4 is a real choice, option 2 is a faux choice because no matter where you opt to transfer to... It'll be two different communities trying to coexist.
I think it speaks volumes that my after 500 posts in this topic, my OP does not yet have ONE like. >_>
LOL, true. I was going to qualify my post, but i thought, ...
But yes, though i purposely put no content in it (edit: for the purpose of discussion from both sides i thought better not to take sides on OP), usually even one player who is super excited about the news will click like simply because the news is good ... or i'm not paying attention.
What I like to hear what ever moved you to go with this?Quote:

The reason why I had a hard time choosing Option ④ was because of the following factors.
A: Players who belong to multiple communities might end up being torn apart by having to decide which community they will follow.
B: The option will cause stress on all players instead of causing stress on a number of players.
C: Players who decide to come back to the game after the merger will end up on a brand new World and no longer be able to player with friends.
Promoting a option and an explanation as for why this option was chosen over the others does usually not go by listing all the cons.
But then again I for one can not find any pro's in that option.
Alright, so lets assume a player coming from a less populated world which has been decided to merge into a larger world.
The player could be either at the time being;I don't think a blanket merge would not affect the player who is already traveling with his established community. The player would stick to his existing social circle.
- Have a community established from previous world
- Been playing alone
For the player who is playing alone, he is opened to more social circle opportunities to pick from. Oppose to the limited circles from the previous world, which the player did not wish participate for whatever reasons.
Now, Sidious mentioned problems of "two communities" trying to co-exist. It isn't that simple. There are hundreds of communities in a world. Just because a player is part of a world does not mean they partake in all the communities of the world as a whole. Besides, the hundreds of communities in the world itself has to learn to co-exist with each other. Adding more to it does not fundamentally change the dynamics of it.
Here's my personal example; (long story)
I was from Midgardsormr in FFXI, I was part of WeSH for my social outlet, and participated in several endgame shells, including some more specific shells like ShikigamiWeapon.
In 2010, Midgardsormr was merged to Quetzalcoatl. I kept together with WeSH, and a few of my endgame linkshell. ShikigamiWeapon, which was a shell in Midgard that helped people get their Yinyang Robe, was established in Quetzalcoatl as well to help the community.
Did it suck that we lost our world name? Yeah, a bit. But did that mean we didn't have fun together still? No, actually far from it. WeSH is having a great time on Quetz and picked up new members as well.
The only difference I remember noticing right after the merge was having more competition over endgame content, which is natural due to higher population density. Although as usual, over time some endgame shell dissolves, I join new ones, and still kept in contact with my circle back at Midgardsormr. However, I do not know if they were Quetz shells or Midgard shells or even a mix.
Never, have I personally asked new people I meet in game if they were from Midgard or Quetz, because I could care less. For me, a new face is a new face regardless if where they came from. Never was I ousted from a shell because I was from Midgard and not originally from Quetz.
Now, instead, if there wasn't a "blanket merge", where Midgard was merged to Quetz, what would have happened would be similar to when players being to choose a world on a new game. Since people have different circles of friends, they are forced to decide which ones they want to follow. Real life friends who plays, in-game friends, or in-game shells, etc.
To reference again to another personal experience;
I've played Ragnarok Online for while back while it was in beta and continued onto around 2004, which is when FFXI released. A few of the circle of players I knew in RO also wanted to move on to play FFXI.
Some decided to join the Ragnarok server, because of the name. However, some others decided to join other worlds. This essentially tore the circle apart and splitting into much smaller social groups, where the group isn't even sustainable by itself. Eventually what was a dozen players, dwindled down to three players. We had to find a new community to join into, instead of continuing from the one we've established from RO.
Now, if option 4 is picked, it's basically doing just that, forcing players to decide which circle of friends they want to follow. If option 2 is picked, no one needs to decide which circles to follow, because all their existing circles are there. Additionally, they also have the choice to pick another world if they wish. Such as if they don't want to merge into a particular world for any reason, they could try to convince their circle of friends to pick another world.
You do know you are talking about North America here right? I mean , I dont think we even know what constructive criticism is. Just RAGGEEEEEE!!
So there is NO possibility that he is just a reroll. Look at my level jackass. Did you even consider that many of us have been playing since launch and just rerolled? You ignorance is so bright its blinding the rest of us.
Well now sounds like a good time to start using them wouldn't you agree?
Says who? The people on here complaining? You do realize that everyone posting on here still only represents a VERY small portion of the community as a whole right?
. Make a decision and move foward, thats what it means to be a leader. You have to make tough decisions that don't always please everyone. After watching the way most of you have reacted about this, I wouldnt want most of you determining my fate in a forum based player poll anyway. W/e option they would have chosen would have ended up having the same responses. WHen a storm comes you can either choose to bitch about it and accomplish nothing,or deal with the hand you have been givin and make the most of it. I would spend less time whining and more time collaborating with my server on what to do next.
Numbers, please.

From your post, I begin to understand why why the world has now chosen to move toward absolute monarchy; democratic systems have been in decline for many years.
</sarcasm>
In other words, once SE says "This is the way it's going to be, deal with it," these threads will be for "nothing." But the way I understood it, they want feedback. It helps them make decisions. Ours is every bit as valid as yours.
I certainly agree that is true when its CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. But getting on here and raging without offering any feedback about how you would have liked to see this done in a way thats beneficial to EVERYONE (Internationally mind you) isn't helping them at all. Many of you think there would be a better way, yet very few of you can actually lay one out.
And I think it should be obvious by looking at the 45 likes that Yoshi's response has gathered already about why they chose to do this the way they have proves my point about the numbers. There isnt 45 posts on this thread that come out and support his method, but clearly there are a group of people that do that don't feel the need to post why they think its fine. Its a very western thing to make full posts when your unhappy about something yet remain silent and NOT post when your pleased. Yoshi himself has said this more than a few times. Of the 55 people on my old ls, me and 4 other guys were the only ones that ever even checked this forum let alone responded on it. I am sure that is not an isolated thing.
i hate to say it, but its true
you maybe only ever see 5-10% of the actual game community on any given forum
even just using my shell as an example(except for the fact we have had alot of recruitment from the forums itself lately) most of our members are non forum goers and im sure thats how it is with most groups
Anyone want to join me on Server 4? Looks like my linkshell is choosing 4. I hope to see all you cool people on March 27th?
/Red Wizard bow
I agree with that. :) What I was aiming for was that I doubt Brigandier can show that the majority is in favor of this merge. I'm on Selbina, which is apparently becoming an exception to the rule, but I've seen rages and petitions in /shout as well as /say throughout Ul'dah, not to mention within linkshells.
@Biggs
Everything Bayohne posts gets 40+ likes. It doesn't matter what it says. Beyond that, Yoshi's post also said that they would continue to monitor feedback. That's where my like came from. Not that he said that it was set in stone.
Ok ,so I think you misread. First, my name is Biggs, so if your going to mention me, at least mention me by my name, as I would be more than willing to do the same for you. Second Yoshi made that post, not Bay. And I wasn't at all claiming that the majority think this is a good idea, rather, only highlighting that niether camp (yours or mine) can make a claim about what the majority does or doesn't want based on these forums alone. I actually think if a poll WAS taken using the 4 options listed, the responses would all be fairly spread out. Hence why I am glad that they just picked one in house, made a tough decision and moved forward with it. It would be completely impossibe to make the majority of people happy no matter which of those 4 response they had chosen.
I personally prefer option 2. This "Going with option 4 being for the French/German player base" thing- I'm sure a good chunk of those people this is all for won't even end up on server 10 anyway. There is not really many cons since well, the naming system in this game makes it much much harder for people elsewhere to have your name unless you were lame and named yourself after a popular game/animu/movie chara. It Also helps returning players at least be able to reunite with friends easily, and not get their mules scattered across worlds.
To people comparing it to FFXI's server merges as a con- (I only skimmed and noticed a phoenix/titan comparison) you cant compare it to the Pheonix/Titan merge. That server was well, shall we say home of some pretty hardcore players compared to Titan. Titan was well- more of a casual server. Even Phoenix's casuals were considered hardcore to their standards- hence why they would feel that way. ( You could honestly tell people who was from where just by gear alone lol ) But compared to that, this game is still in primal stages. I know this prolly was the case for other servers too, but take into consideration that the communities here aren't as tight as FFXI's which had people who played together for a good couple of years. many of us were together for a year and a few months at most. Also, the server elitism that existed in XI wouldn't exist due to lack of content.
and honestly the other server i was on when it merged ( Quetz x midgar ) while I was against it for the sole reason of quetz's food market ruining my gil income- the communities blended together well. For XIV, market crash is something that isn't of concern. The markets are meh to begin with due to this game's age. lol
Honestly though, option 4 doesn't bother me ( it's easy to figure out where you and your friends will go- it's how most of us got to x server in the beginning anyway ), but it has many cons to it. Ya wanna be with your friends, server full and only half your friends got in? Too bad, your SOL! Got a mule and it didn't make it to your server? Oh wait your SOL! Come back from that long wait for 2.0? Oh wait, your SOL and lost not only your group who would letcha back in (not like many of us are doing much together since a lot of us have everything lol ), but your mules too!
SE... if you go with 4, at least make sure inactive characters made before the merges have 1 free transfer credit that they can use upon reactivation. You will lose many of those people waiting for 2.0 to come back.
I could not agree with this part more. They seem to have no problem catering to players that don't play this game right now the rest of the time they are making decisions, I don't see why they chose to stop here. I hope that later down the road (possibly during 2.0 launch) they offer that as an option. People shouldnt be punished for not wanting to pay for a game thats in the condition its in now. I hope they change this down the road.
Lol, getting people in threads confused~ I'm sorry. I think I'm heading to bed now. In any case, I'm not positive that the results would be evenly spread, but I have nothing to show. Honestly, I wish they would make it a poll, but it doesn't matter. And I guess I should rephrase what I said. If a dev makes a post, it will get a ton of likes. And if I'm not mistaken, Bay posted the translation; Yoshi's post would be on the Japanese forums. I was referring to Bay's post, not Yoshi's. Yoshi's original post has 100 likes, actually, so there's an even bigger stat for you.
I read the response made by Yoshi-P earlier and given time to think it over I'm not really concerned so much now over their plans with Option 4. What I don't agree with though is why they're still making inactive players suffer. Why is it so difficult to let inactive players choose a server too? There's two options:
1.) Make it an option in the SQUARE ENIX Members account page. Upon logging into your account there you can designate which characters inactive or not, will be sent to which server. Give active players first priority on this. Inactive players will be marked as a lower priority meaning that if their choice of server fills up with active players first then they're instead sent to a different server. Or to make it more fair, let them choose up to 3 servers. If their first selection isn't open it defaults to the second. If not that one, to the third. If all 3 are taken, they're defaulted to the least populated server.
2.) Send them to a random default server if one isn't chosen before the date. Upon first reactivating a character and their account, they're then given the option to stay on their currently assigned server, or migrate to a new one providing their chosen server has an opening. This option remains in place indefinitely until they choose and accept a server for each character that's reactivated.
Using the above options it still gives players who are paying right now the higher priority but allows those who aren't playing for whatever reasons to choose a server without being shafted. It's highly unfair that they're pulling this stunt, and personally I believe it may be influenced as an incentive for people to start paying right now.
To the powers that be,
I must congratulate you all. With this decision, you've managed to disappoint me in a way that I didn't think was possible. I'm finding it difficult to express my disappointment in a civil manner.
The web of bonds that the community has built over a year (longer for those of us that came from Finial Fantasy XI or different games) is being threaten with destruction. Bayohne posted a translation of Yoshida's reply to the community.
To this, I must ask, why not dedicate servers for other regions/languages as well? Other players have asked for something like this. I'm not trying to be rude in any way, but what makes that region worthy of your attention to the point where you would suggest that they gather at X-Server and leave the rest of us to fend for ourselves?Quote:

To the development team and community representatives:
I don't know how the other communities feel about Option ④. So, I must ask, have you seen the player-base this upset/disappointed since the initial release of this game or is this just the North America and English speaking player reaction?
