Other people could be overclocking which isn't shown in the specs the benchmark displays.

AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series(VRAM 2769 MB) 8.17.0010.1172
Looking at other players with comparable systems, this seems just a bit low. Is it perhaps because I have an 8 core and Square doesn't get along with AMD graphics cards quite as well? Perhaps someone more computer-savvy could give me some advice? I haven't tried OCing yet as everything looks good "on paper" at least.
For the record, the graphics card is a 7950.
The lower performance is probably related to your CPU not the GPU. When I monitored the CPU usage most of the load is against two to three cores, there's activity on other cores, however it's very little. So this benchmark will favor Intel CPUs because they have a much higher IPC(Instructions Per Cycle) than AMD CPUs which have more cores.
Most people with AMD video cards are using AMD CPUs, which is giving the wrong impression about the performance of AMD video cards. I seen scores of AMD video cards with Intel CPUs and they are just as high as the equivalent Nvidia card.
I see someone get 7100 with an Intel CPU with same card at stock:
http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...l=1#post971416
on a Nvidia 580, Intel i7 950 @ 3ghz, 12gb DDR3 RAM i get 5596 at maximum.
Thing is i actually underclock my graphics card (slightly), i reduce the "graphics clock" from 787 to 700. It doesnt effect my score much.
Reason? if i let the fans do what they like they spin up to 90% as soon as i start a game up and i cant hear myself think even with a headset. With the underclock i can cap the fan speed at 60% (inaudible with headset on) and the GPU just about gets upto 80c.
I thought this might be interesting for people who hate noise as much as i do.
Sound like you may have a defective GTX 580 or a case cooling problem. That's really high fan speed.
I probably hate PC noise more than you. I have my PC set up that it's almost silent idle and still very quiet when playing a game. Using H80i CPU cooler set on low fan profile and a giant intake fan on my case set on low as well. I can only hear the H80i pump on idle.
Below is my videocard's cooler. Even though I have it overclocked a lot it doesn't make much noise. Max temperature during benchmark was 67 C and max fan speed hit 36%.
http://cdn3.wccftech.com/wp-content/...ox-635x486.jpg
My slim PS3 sounds about twice as loud as my PC.
Its not defective and its not an airflow problem, its just they provide the bare minimum for reference coolers. even though the cards are easily £300+.
On top of that i think the software spins the fans up faster than they need to be at a given time
The card was running rock solid albeit loudly for about a year before i had the idea of manualy setting the fan speeds,
so i ended up messing with fan speeds and keeping an eye on temps, like i said. At 60% the fans are whisper quiet and the temps barely get up to 80c (anything under 90c is acceptable) the compromise was a slight underclock.
Interestingly more aggresive underclocks didnt give nearly as good results.
I looked at the card in the picture recently but i think im going to wait till the 700 series is out. at which time i will take a great interest in the stock cooling.
Incidentally there are 3rd party GPU coolers like the "Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme Plus II" which from reviews gives very excellent results- probably lower my temps AND allowing me to overclock instead of my current underclock. but i kind of resent spending another £60 on a £300+ graphics card
At the end of the day i managed to get my PC silent for no money and it will still play games on maximum so i thought it might be interesting.
I got around an 8500 I think maxed on 1080. I'll post the actual page when I get home.

I also tried on my 40" samsung TV (1920x1080) and scored 6757..

I'd like to improve my score a little more. What would be the best option for the least amount of money to improve performance? A bit short on funds at the moment.
I dont know how much memory affect the bench but I think a new card would definitely give you a better score. I would recommend a 7950 or GTX660Ti. Anything under that wouldn't give you much more than your card (assuming it's a 5870). But if you can afford a GTX670 or HD7970GE, then you would get a score of ~8000.
I dont understand why you score 6757 on TV and 7245 (on monitor ?) at 1920x1080. No matter the device, your score shouldn't have such wide gap. Unless you changed some settings.
Also, I saw other people with a GTX670 and they had a score above 8000. Now it's possible they OC'ed their cards and CPU and you didn't. But if you also did some OC, you should check your settings and see if you can get better performance.

Just finished a little pc upgrade since my last post. Built this pc exactly 7 years ago around the 680i chipset, its had a few upgrades along the way but im still milking some good performance out of it :) Quite happy with the results based on how much I spent, £220 for the GTX 660Ti (upgraded from GTX285), and £55 for the E8400 3.0Ghz 45nm (upgraded from E6600 2.4Ghz 65nm).

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti - 2GB DDR5, 980Mhz Core (Overclocked to 1100Mhz)
Vertex 2 SSD
Performance of the 660Ti is being bottlenecked by my CPU a bit and I really would have liked a brand new motherboard with 6Gb/s Sata for my SSD and PCI Express 3.0 for my new GTX 660Ti, but then I would also need a nice new i7 CPU and another faster 4Gigs of RAM and would end up costing another £500 so, didn't really see the need. Im pretty happy with 5600 score with max settings and my high resolution and saved some money in the process.
2500 Score increase since my previous test for a £275 upgrade and minimum hassle. (as in swapping out motherboards)

I got my ASUS GTX Titan Today. It does get a higher score than my GTX 680, however the minimum frame rate seems unchanged; it's probably related to CPU bottleneck when there are a lot of characters on the screen. So I don't recommend this for ARR over the GTX 680 because the absurd price isn't worth it.

7856 on MaximumEdit: Ran it again to get a screenshot and got 7901 on Max
https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.n...78869045_n.jpg
On Medium, the score -started- at 9,000 (I'm trying hard not to make the over-done joke here :P) and ended at 18,696
Edit2: No overclocking the GPU
First off here's my main setup.
Here's the same setup but using the IGP in the 3770k.
I'm fooling around with overclocking and I decided to see how good was the iGPU on the 3770k, first I updated the driver from Intel and rebooted. I'm shocked at what the iGPU can do when paired with fast memory and feeding it 1GB. It definitely can't handle 1080p but I can see this as a good alternative if one's GPU dies and is in the middle of an RMA or making a low power itx build in a small portable case to put in the living as your "ARR BOX".
update: Stock is 1150mhz was able to get it to 1550mhz stable without messing with voltages.

Do most of you 10k plus people overclock ? because i see that only way to reach 8-11k
That 11k score is my highest so far, I normally get 10300-10600 with the card overclocked, it reaches a score of 7000 points before it gets to the first loading and it gains another 1000 extra points at the very end after the meteor, I'm not completely sure if that's meant to happen but the screen stays white at the end for around 10 to 15 seconds giving me those extra points.
Since I have a new monitor which can now accommodate the 1920x1080 resolution, I have re-run my benchmarks.

Other than the visible FPS differences, the Benchmark looked and ran beautifully on every setting. A major improvement from my previous GPU (GeForce 240) and on my nice new monitor. :)
