It's been quite some time since we've heard a peep about any progress. I sincerely hope we see some substantial update soon.

Indeed, it has been a while and no plans or news from SE on this front.
There is a small blurb about the mac version in the famitsu interview, which you can find translated at http://www.bluegartr.com/threads/126...ea-Media-Event
Thanks for the info! Here's a quote from the BG forums specific to that topic:

is the mac version dead?
really hope to hear about this in the next letter. I'm running via bootcamp, but it is no my preference, and id love to see if i could get a better or at least similar performance from the OSX side
Just bumping this thread. Hope we have an update soon.
If you have the mac client it still works, about as well or poorly as it ever did. Full screen still looks gorgeous on a 27 inch iMac, until it does those weird graphic artifacts all over the screen. Seems to work best in Windowed mode. I've played for a couple of hours that way. Would be nice to hear something/anything though on the plan for this orphaned client.
The artifact stuff during the last boss of The Vault can really trip me up. I play in window mode AND standard. If I try to go ultra with the graphics everything looks terrible. Also on the 27" iMac.
Also, just wondering if you have the same issue I do with sending a report from in-game. I can't actually type in the text box. I'm wondering if it's a mac issue or just me.
The text box issue seems kind of random to me, i get it on Mail sometimes...
From preliminary Patch 3.1 Notes...
[2.0] The following adjustments have been made to the Mac version:
The client is now compatible with Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan.
The default graphic settings in the System Configuration interface have been adjusted.
Adjustments have been made affect the performance of systems using the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M, GT 755M, and GT 750M graphics cards.
Yes, finally some progress in the Mac client fixes. Can't wait to try it out on Tuesday.
People have many reasons for buying Macs. Gaming isn't usually one of them.
Good thing gaming isn't the only thing you can do with computers, including Macs.
Most of the art//3D design/AV design students when I was in school worked on Macs. They were more tailored for that thing.Sue someone for wanting to play games that supposedly support their platform on a computer they probably use for something more important than gaming why don't you?
Disclaimer, I hate Macs, I've used them, they're not my thing, but they're a legitimate platform and when the game says it's supported, it should be bloody supported, and not in a halfass way.
Telling someone to just buy a PC *doesn't help*.
Which is completely irrelevant to this conversation. Square advertised a working OSX client, charged full price for it, and then delivered software which did not work. End of story.
However, I know 3.1 had some improvements for the OSX client. Does anyone have anything to report?
i was getting like 24 to 30 frames per second in Ishgard, 2013 iMac 27 inch, nvidia... that was playing full screen. Ran around town for a bit before works, no weird artifacts that people have described... but... it did crash to the desktop with a weird "Failed assertion error..." Then made the whole screen all white... i had to force quit out of that. I did have a bunch of other stuff running, so maybe something else crashed it. Didn't really have time to do anything else...
Oh another thing i noticed, you can now Add Mac client, through the Mogstation. I wonder if they intend to resume sales of the retail copy.
I've been running it in windowed mode pre 3.1, but see from release notes that the default screen settings were updated. Did they fix the issues with full screen mode mostly so it now gets better frame rates than windowed mode?
Huge difference now on my MacBook Pro Retina. I had to go into system config and click on use default and then it reset everything to high end Mac settings. Much, much better performance. Unfortunately the graphics don't look as sharp but I can rub in 24 man raids now with a decent frame rate.
I have been playing FF14 since Heavenward was released on my Mac as well as a pc. My iMac when it came out was the new at the time 5k version fully maxed with the fastest and most of everything. It plays fine, I now have the brand new 5k iMac fully maxed as well and FF14 runs even better. Also SE has never required that I cancel my Mac account. That said with the release of 3.1 the client is now compatible with El Capitan One would hope that with Metal for gaming that is now part of this OS they would get it right this time and that they would get it at all. I read the full report on it on these forums and the idea they mentioned that Mac owners aren't into gaming is a huge myth. If new games like Eso and GW2 can develop for Mac as well as some very high end single player games there is no reason at all that SE can and should get it right this time around and give us a release date for putting the Mac version back for sale. I have friends who would love to play this game but refuse to put Windows on their Macs or buying a pc to play it.
There isn't a 1500 pc that isn't self built that comes with maxed oute specs of an iMac. There are no 5k retina 27" displays you can get for a pc. Not that I have seen! If there is. it's gonna cost you a lot more then 1500. On top of that many Mac owners will never deal with Windows. And btw my maxed iMac was barely 4k. I use it for high end graphics and video editing as well. If a high end MMO like Eso can work quite well on Macs there is no reason why SE can't get it to run well on them. I get really tired of people who are stuck in the pc (windows) box
That said I do own a pc and only use it for MMO games that I can't get for my Mac. I am not an either or person.
It seems you are trying to turn this conversation into some kind of old and very tired PC vs Mac argument. As was previously mentioned the issue is SE decided to develop a version for Mac users. I believe in part to maybe take over WoW in sales which has had a Mac client since it started al those years ago. And then both GW2 and ESO went and developed for Mac as well. SE really does need to get it right instead of dangling the cookie in front of Mac owners and then taking it away cause they didn't bake them correctly.
I hope SE can continue to improve the OSX client. Can anyone else update us on how the client is currently running and what needs to be improved?
I've always been a Windows type of guy, been around since Win95/98/NT/XP... and so on. Though I had my fair share with Apple computers. But my opinion is bias towards the Windows family.
I never truly understood why some people preferred Apple's OS. Okay, so I went to a Digital Arts Uni and we had to use apple computers there for some of our projects. I was told that the workflow for digital content creation is much smoother and faster on Apple, which I did not really find... true (maybe it was just me). What you could on a Apple OS, you could do on Windows.
Though I would never dare to play games on a Apple OS as long as I have my rig still breathing.
But it's sorta ironic in a way. People are asking to end PS3 support so the game can develop much faster, but continue to ask for support for the Apple OS, which will in turn take away the devs time.
Whatever makes the consumers happy right?
What a difference a patch makes! Under 3.1, I've found the Mac client totally stable and much faster / smoother than previous incarnations on my custom-built Mac. I'm on a quad-core i7 with a ATI 6870 card. I use the medium settings and check the box for High Quality graphics and things look and run far more smoothly than they have. In most respects, this is starting to feel like a client that's ready for prime time.
Interestingly, Ul'dah (and ONLY Ul'dah, so far) brings my framerate to its knees. Running up the steps from the Aetheryte is a total slideshow. However, the framerate does smooth a bit after running around for a few moments. No other area I've encountered, including the flying zones in Heavensward, choke the client like the outer ring of Ul'dah. So if the Mac client team happens to check in on this thread: fix Ul'dah and you've got a working Mac client. :) Oh, and also fix the feedback / bug report controls now that things are starting to seem relatively stable. :)
The whole mac vs pc is pretty tired and way past over done. I am sure SE decided to develop for Mac finally because other MMOs such as GW2 and ESO, etc, have. Both games run fine on Mac. And of course there is WoW. I am sure SE was hoping to capture some more players from WoW and since that MMO has been running fine on Macs since the beginning there is no reason SE's 3rd party developer can't get it right also.
I have been playing FF!4 since 3.0 on my iMac and it has run fine, even better then on my PC. Over the 2+ years that FF14 has been out I have a lot of game crashes and frame rate issues on Windows. (my PC specs were well above the recommended requirements). And I have seen plenty of posts complaining about game issues long before SE made this attempt to bring Mac users into the fold. Also since they now have PS4 as well they have to work on game issues on that platform too. Maybe you prefer that SE exclude any other platform other then Windows? Sounds like you prefer everyone live inside your little box.
Tons of people will never understand the debate between Mac and Windows. For some of us FF14 on Mac is the way to go because of our needs, not the needs people think a person should have. SE is providing a Mac client and they should keep making it better regardless of what windows or console users think. The real concern is a player pays X amount for a license and use of the game. A player's real concern is just that. I pay, I play and it better be good. Nothing else matters. If they want to expand to that market, then they should deliver a quality product on every platform they think they are able to offer it. PS3, PS4, PC or Mac, doesn't matter. You are still paying SE to deliver a product with good quality. I applaud SE is starting to show efforts to bring a better experience to mac users because it matters to me. I don't really care about other platforms because for me they are irrelevant. It's still slow, but at least it's showing improvements.
I just recently purchased the expansion for windows and run bootcamp... I stopped playing shortly after it released due to bootcamp. Missed the game so much I went back to bootcamp but I would love to get my hands on the mac client... any news if they plan to bring it back out?? I have no problem purchasing another license if it means I do not have to boot camp.
I don't think they plan on releasing the Mac client again until it performs better.
I got a pop up this morning on my Mac client version to re-install. It looks like some more Mac improvements but some people may be instructed via the pop up first to re-install the Mac client:
Update Details
Reinstalling the client will address the following:
・ An issue wherein performance improvements were not being properly applied.
・ An issue related to system updates.
・ An issue wherein the top portion of the window would appear off-screen when using Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan.
・ An issue wherein the in-game Support Desk feature could not be used.
・ Multiple issues related to Japanese input.
・ Adds support for Google Japanese input while in windowed mode.
After re-installing the client as instructed. I am seeing much better performance, frame rates, and no graphic ghost images appearing like I used to at times. I am pleased thus far with the update. More time will tell I am sure. But for the 1hour I've played, it is much better then it was previously.
Be ready for a long re-install and then update process. It took me several hours, but well worth it.
Played for several hours and the graphics problems I was experiencing pre re-install and update are all gone. Thank you!!!!
Nice, thanks for the input, Galadrium! My wife bought the mac client on launch so we could play together, but i guess you know how it went...
I insisted on her playing at least for the xmas event gear and then she found out about the update. We are currently trying to download it. I will try to give an update if we are successful.
Honestly can't believe how much the client has improved since the release. I thought that a Transgaming port would be utterly hopeless. I've got to hand it to Square-Enix and Transgaming - you guys don't just throw your hands in the air and give up when something seems hopelessly broken. Your perseverance is to be commended. :)
Sounds like that Square Enix is close to resuming Mac sales again. They mentioned it in the Live Letter today. Glad to see the improvements they have made thus far and hopeful for what is yet to come.
Apparently from a email a person received from SE the mac version of XIV already has a set date it will resume sales on February 23rd.

I just learned yesterday about the December update for this - I had no idea! The little 5-point list of updates is misleading - that we're asked to delete and re-install the client tells me there was some major changes here.
And the results? I did some dungeoning, and daily hunts that took me to all the new areas, and I'm seeing performance that's either on par with the Windows client (on the same machine), and, shockingly, I even get slightly BETTER frame rates on occasion. With how miserable the original client was, I'd have settled for something slightly less than the Windows version, if it meant not having to restart. I never expected to see equal performance, given its TrasnGaming origins.
I'm so beside myself that I almost don't believe it. Well done, FFXIV team. You're the best, truly.
Oh, and I got that email as well - it prompted my friend and I to assume 2/23 would be the launch of 3.2 as a result. Looks like our hunch was correct. :D
