A major character dying does serves a narrative purpose, though.
If a plague spreads across Eorzea next week and Y'shtola catches it and dies, then it not only shows that the plague is a threat but establishes a sense of danger and urgency that doesn't come with, say, temporarily promoting Riol into a position of prominence only to have him be the one to perish.
If fireballs are falling from the sky and one of them strikes G'raha head on and leaves him as nothing more than a mass of charred bones and burnt flesh then it hits differently to just having a group of random, generic NPC's die in the background.
Many JRPG's - including other Final Fantasy games - have not avoided having major character deaths that advanced the story in a way that made sense. I can't help but think that some people dismiss the idea of any death whatsoever as a way to shield their favourite characters from any and all consequences.
