Why not just change it? Turning it off doesn't make the aura look like it's half finished. At the very least just make it not expand as far as it does. That said though I agree with everyone else. Please just give us the aura from 50 job quest.

After dealing with the issue of dark knights standing around in places like Foundation and Idyllshire with their auras on, even running around and likely causing people to gag as they run by, I've come to the conclusion that simply hiding it isn't a solution anymore. Then that would mean hiding every other effect from my own character just to get rid of it.
On top of that, I'd still have to dance between aura and no aura during some battles and out in the field somewhere so I don't annoy someone who might not know you can turn it off/hasn't set the option to hide player effects.
So the easiest solution would be to just give us the 50 aura. If there's some story related reason we don't have that one, whatever. There's no story related reason our aura is a massive cloud that literally causes your eyes to hurt. Fray didn't have it, Esteem didn't have it, Sidurgu doesn't have it (unless he decides it's cool in two levels. So tell me if Sidurge succumbs to that level of edginess), so what's causing the adventurer to have it?
Did you not see how amazing the other effect is compared? I would love to hide it.. YES.. but I would rather have it fixed to be something unique and actually cool like what I displayed in the original Post.
Then there are people standing in one place, whether it be an aetheryte, a market board, and npc, or the side of a road with it on. It's certainly SE's fault for making it so large and obvious with no way to turn it off without losing the benefits, but there are still DRKs completely oblivious to the people around them. And if they're not oblivious and just doing it because they know it's annoying, they need to stop playing that class.
How about making the aura a fainter red glow around the sword and only when the weapon is drawn?
This doesnt solve the problem.
In the words of someone in Idyllshire about 5 minutes ago..."DRK's you realize that afking in town with Darkside up makes you look like emo douchebags". If you turn this off for ALL players ok fine. But if the individual DRK has to turn it off then it doesn't solve the problem at all.
Thread is titled: "Darkside Aura .. hurts my eyes. Can't turn it off."
Devs respond that they are looking to have an option to turn off the effect of Darkside aura.
I say that's the thread.
Posting to agree with the general consensus - it's an ugly effect that is way too large, but that doesn't mean auras are inherently bad and should be hidden. A smaller, more focused aura would be awesome.
SERIOUSLY? We don't want you to hide it but to make it better looking! >:l And you guys answer to this but not all the whining about small fixes to Drk? C'mon. Even a "No Drk is fine, get gewd" answer is fine, any answer to the whining is fine.
My Cat GIF is me at FFXIV Staff atm.
Please change the aura SE. Give us a completed design instead of the half aura we have right now.
I realize the original post was about wanting to be able to hide the ugly aura and has since been edited to request changes to it. I'm all for the DRKS getting something they like, but we got a response saying they will look into us being able to not see the damn thing and I think that should be the first priority before people start asking them to work on a new one, perhaps in a separate and brand new topic after they enable folks to toggle off the visual. I don't really want to see anybody's aura, cool or not in town.
There already is another aura, and the ability to hide auras shouldn't take long at all to code.
They already do maintenance every six seconds, so I don't get why such simple things as these as pushed away while more difficult things like adding dungeons and balancing things is all they do (provided these vague "maintenance" things are even doing either). Not saying don't prioritize balancing and dungeons, I'm just saying they can do both, but they don't. On top of that, the aura is sort of dangerous as it is. How long before someone gets more than a headache from that abomination of an effect? They can turn off the other piles of effects you get in dungeons and raids to avoid having their eyes assaulted, but they can't get rid of darkside. That doesn't even make sense, design wise to exclude it. Sure, it tells you it's on, but there's already a far superior effect if you want confirmation it's on without looking at your own buffs/debuffs all the time.
Please, if you add the option to hide it, make it so that we DON'T have to disable any other effect. I don't want that, in order to stop seeing that hideous aura, I have to disable another thing too.
Or maybe just redesign it to be more subtle and less... "hey! look at me! LOOK AT ME I SAY! do you think I'm super baddie?". Currently I can see a DRK from almost a kilometer away, and it's awful and annoying when you have it close to or on yourself.
Thank you.
the problem here is that this is not on a japanese forum. if this prob was put up by japanese player SE wasnt going to reply like that. SE dont care about US and EU players and their opinions.
As long as hiding my personal aura/the auras of other players doesn't interfere with the rest of my other battle effects/party effects, I'm fine with that much. I came from Paladin and I never needed a bright white aura telling me I was in sword oath so I don't need a big red obnoxious aura telling me I'm in Darkside. But the real takeaway for the development team from this thread/ the posts within, as well as posts on reddit and in another thread on here. If the majority of players who use and don't use Dark Knight think that the aura is so bad that we'd rather have it hidden then the skill animation itself was a bit of a failure and should be redone to keep up with the quality within the rest of the game.
I can safely say that on my time as Monk I loved my GL 3 Aura and more so after the changes were made to each individual level of GL that aura was well done. It made me feel powerful it did its job. Darkside's current aura doesn't really make me feel like it's doing it's job. If I were being honest it makes me feel like someone played Knights of the Old Republic, saw the color for "the darkside" was red and tried to go with that mindset for Dark Knight. However it doesn't exactly look like an Aura of Darkness, it doesn't really look like an aura of blood either. Heck it doesn't even frankly look like an aura from my character it just happens to follow me everywhere I go like a bad storm cloud.
I don't think there's any reason to be upset with them only currently working on a way to hide it however, but it shouldn't have to be hidden in the first place. No other aura has been requested to be able to be hidden and yet this one has been. Hopefully the development team looks at this fact and decides to change up the effect to actually match the graphic quality with the rest of the game.
I'm just curious if they even read the past 43 pages, from that response it honestly doesn't even look like they read our feedback.
Starting to get annoying honestly.
It's not that they aren't listening it's that the aura is currently causing health issues for players (migraines ,headaches, eye pain, etc.) So before they can even go through the process of which aura to use , testing it in different situations, checking it's interaction with skill effects we already have it's look in battle, mounted up, walking, running, sprinting, using emotes,/cpose,etc. The first order of business would be to allow those physically affected by it to hide it and continue playing as normal till they can fully implement a new aura even if the 50 one is already in the game and the black flames were originally in an older dev release of the expansion. However I agree it does look bad when you don't even acknowledge the full scope of the situation right in the thread. I'd rather we get a post from the gfx team lead to be honest.
lets not give up on the dream
An option to hide the aura is only half of what we needed to fix this. The aura needs to be changed.
I'm fine with one sentence responses. I'm happy to have any response at all with how little we get. The problem is it's not what most of us wanted. People want it fixed to be better, I'm sure the only people who want to hide it are people who don't use dark knight and are just annoyed at them in the area. And the dark knights who do want to turn it off is as a last resort.
And people are talking about how easy it is to hide it and this is the first logical thing to do but then they go ahead and say "oh right but I only want to turn off the drk effect not any of the other effects" then no it's not super easy to do.
Also I'm sure it's not causing anyone any health issues or literally hurting their eyes. I call bs on that
I want to turn the Darkside effect off, and play the Dark Knight. But I really hope it doesn't erase ALL of the other effects! I only have issues with this specific one!
This is an unusual way of dealing with the issue... Rather than make a menu option somewhere to hide visual effects for one specific ability (something you may have to deal with again in the future as new jobs/skills are added and simiar issues happen again), why not do things properly and adjust the visual effects for that skill? It's not like you've never adjusted visual effects or sound effects for other skills in the past, why hack your way out of this one?
Something needs to be done about that animation, though, it is physically straining for the eyes. It causes headaches, nausea and eye fatigue in a number of people, myself included. It's not "just ugly", it's a health hazard.
If the little red wavy lines are giving people health issues.... then they shouldn't be playing video games...If darkside is giving people issues but all the other crazy huge bright fast movement things in this game aren't....I would have to agree, I call bs.
Anyways, I want a better aura. The black flames were way better. The giant red poof isn't evil, just an eye sore. I thought it was amazing at first...It's just to big..and red... When I think of dark knight, I see batman...ermmm, darkness. The black flames were looking perfect... The community clearly feels that it was better. Just change it back =P
Also I'm sure it's not causing anyone any health issues or literally hurting their eyes. I call bs on that
Yeeaaaah...why's that? It's large, stands out the most against the rest of the world unless you're in combat, it flickers everywhere, you can see it from far away...why wouldn't it hurt our eyes? To be fair, I'm looking at monitors most of the time which is why I decided on tinted glasses. Even so, it gets uncomfortable looking at unnatural light all the time. Final Fantasy XIV, however, with it's ridiculous amount of fancy effects, pretty much ruins the point of the tint. You can turn all those off except Darkside which is the worst effect for that reason, and others. The red looks completely out of place, so you're going to be drawn to it when people decide to stand around with it on and probably, your enjoyment will decrease at that moment until you've not seen it for at least 10 seconds.
I'd like to know how those wavy lines are little. Secondly, don't say we shouldn't be playing games if an effect begins to physically hurt having to look at. That's entirely the developer's fault and, in this case, also the player being inconsiderate with the skill. If it hurts to look at the other, more prominent flashing from combat, we turn it off. That's not the case with darkside so it's more of an issue.
Watch, all this is gonna backfired and both sides are gonna lose this pointless war.
