They aren't hurting themsleve when they aren't selling the items for profit in the first place. I'll undercut the crap out of everyone. It's usually because I need the inv space more than the gil or item being sold.

I mean, she said it herself:
For reals, she'd save so much of her precious time if she'd just NPC the item--she'd get returns in <1minute as opposed to <1 day. And she wouldn't hurt the market, for people that do like to use it. ^^;
But then she'd get less money. Just because money isn't her main objective doesn't mean she objects to getting more. She's using the market in a way that meets her needs, balancing time against money the way she wants. If you think her items are outrageously underpriced...buy them.
I don't think its always attributed to "stupid" undercutting,Its appears alot of it is attributed to a "stupid" original poster. Just because materials needed to make an item sell on the wards for the equal or greater value of the going price of the item doesn't mean someone is specifically undecutting, or losing money. I am a GSM and a MIN. I min what I need to make items I want to make and sell them at what ever the heck price I want. If its 1/2 the goingrate thats fine. Because for me its 100% instant profit. Then clowns like the OP of this thread by my leftover raw materials at an inflated price (because its the going rate) and thus cannot compete with my prices on finished product. Thats the benefit i get for my time and effort invested in leveling the DoL that compliments my DoH. Supply and demand means different things in different situations. I have no overhead because i farm my raw mats. If thats to complicated for the OP to comprehend, then he doesn't deserve to sell his items.
Get over it. I'm not gonna NPC valuable items for 1/10 or less than what I'd get in the wards. The way I see it, if you can buy most of your mats and sell a finished product and make any profit at all, then there is nothing to complain about.
Go farm your mats, then sell your products for a reasonable price and you'll have nothing to worry about. My one-off short sales have no affect on somebody who can mass produce things people need.
To be honest, I don't think the problem is the "stupid undercutters" either--its the people that feel the need to compete with them. In a decent economy, drastically undercut items would sell quickly and the price would return to near normal. For some reason, in XIV, everyone feels like they need to camp their retainers constantly and make sure their price is always the lowest. On Selbina, if Shiny Thing is going for 1.5m, and I sell one for 750k just because I'm desperate, if it's not bought in less than an hour, there will already be a 740k. And then a 700k, a 650k, etc. until someone finally has had enough and buys them all, and sells them for 1m each.
The next thing, if someone is going to buy an item, there's a good chance they'd buy it at the current market value; in other words, if you undercut by 1 gil (putting yourself at the top of the list) you will probably sell your item at the same time you would if you undercut by 100k. In the case above (halfing the price of a 1.5m item) I think someone would jump at the opportunity and buy it just to resell at full price when they stumbled upon it, so you may indeed sell it much faster. But in more realistic examples (something normally 300k, someone sells for 200k) you would have sold it just as fast at 290k, most likely.
