Oooh oooh oooh, I wanna make an anology too, this is fun.
We are a squad of marines on the front lines. We have a squad leader, several people in a firesquad and a marine medic. The medic is there in case of injury and to treat the wounded, but if he refuses to pick up his rifle in the meantime, he'll be booted out of the squad in no time.
Thus you can accomplish your main goal (of keeping your squadmates healthy) by not only treating them when wounded but also by contributing to destroying the enemy in the first place.
As a healer, is it my job to DPS? A new perspective.

though your analogy is a bit better than the football goal keeper thing.
however it isn't exactly accurate. a combat medic generally doesn't join in with the fighting. Generally speaking, they only fight in self defense, usually only when they come under attack, and usually at short range while trying to treat casualties. also your bog standard section wont likely have a medic attached, seeing as all marines (and indeed all forces personnel) are trained in first aid. a medic might be attached to the platoon, but he probably wouldn't go out on a fighting patrol with the section. you could say marines are more like paladins lol. -

My additional edit, all marines are riflemen first, just because you have a specialization does not mean you are not a rifleman and expected to fight. I would say the squad leader is more like the paladin, directing the group and delegating the tasks, fireteam as dps, and medic as a healer. Yes, marines have first aid training but that equates to skills like second wind and and clemency not a medica II. Yeah, in real life it is unlikely that a doctor will be attached to a squad on the front lines but if he was ordered to go, he better damned well be able to fight too.
