Pfft, so wait a min. You think Elins resemble children? They look like women with degenerative disc disease. Only a perverted teen and or a pedophilic mind would say they look like children. Btw, lalafells not only look like children, but they look like friggen babies.

Yes rly, I went there. You can't possibly deny the fact that nearly every popular mmo has a race similar to children, but this game says F*** it, little baby geniuses everywhere. Call them potatoes, cabbage patch kids, Dolls or any other figment of your imagination, and you'll only be purposely dodging the fact that they look and sound( voice options ) like children.
You clearly do not know what degenerative disc disease is, but I've heard the disease excuse before many, many times. Please do tell me where you live that people who degenerative disc disease also are under the height of 120 cm, but also have a clearly underdeveloped body except for the oversexuliazed thighs. I'm sorry for having eyesight and having the ability to see that they clearly look like children as that seems to offend you. Lalafells also do not like babies or a child to me, but to each their own. They look like mini potato-men. I do find it funny how you're calling me someone with a "pedophilic mind" or a "perverted teen" (I'm not sure what pervert of any age would find those things attractive) for seeing the obvious, but then you proceed to do the same with Lalafell. Self projection, eh (I kid, I kid)? ;)

Yes, I can deny that actually. Almost every MMO I've played doesn't have a childlike race. WoW, Wildstar, Guild Wars 2, SWTOR, Vindictus and Path of Exile to list a few. Infact, the ones that do have childlike races are usually the ones that pander to that audience and usually have a cash shop selling them for real world money.
Just to chime in; Paz is 17 during the time of those events (or at the very least, she definitely does not look like an under aged child), and while Chico is still definitely in the under-age side of the attention, everything that's happened to him is either off-screen or implied through recordings. How it's presented is a big factor when it comes to media attention as well as the medium that it's in, and it'd definitely be a big no-no if you could literally blow off their heads with a snipe rifle (which you can do to the adult soldiers mind you). Kojima himself had admitted that this could backfire tremendously and potentially ruin his career if it wasn't pulled off well (specifically if he had dipped into the gore/dismemberment aspect of the children). All of these examples are also in single player games which sets a limit to what the players run with.
But I disgress that the presentation and the medium is the most important part. There are some lines that are acceptable to the public media, such as superdeformedl (lalafells, tatarus or gnomes). You can't really get away with something that objectionably looks like a healthy child and say they're actually 2x years of age.
Funny enough, a F2P-cash shop mmo I used to play was pretty much going all-in with the fanservice on female characters.

She's technically a ageless demon queen or something, but this is an example of what I mentioned earlier when considering what is a "child" or not. I'm pretty sure they're adding some costumes/swimsuits to sexualize her (and it is a korean mmo no less, so demographics are different as well), but it's also a game where it's not particularly violent to draw that sort of attention which is why they don't get media flak when it came overseas.
There's another Miqo'te Girl (named as such) in Mor Dhona who also has a short tail. They're Miqo'te children.

DDS causes you to shrink in size, may not be much but its a reference to give an idea of what elins are like to me, ladies that are short.....with thunder thighs (sex sells apparently). I don't play Tera btw, and I'm not defending that race in particular , but calling them children is just awkward. And actually you haven't offended me, but I'm sure I must have offended you from clear misinformation; I don't think you have a pedophilic mind as you seem to believe Lalafells are potato people for some reason (maybe some other mental similarity) haha jk jk :). Seems to me you don't really have a reasonable issue with the idea of a child race in XIV other than people might look at it a different way, like any other race in ANY game.
For mmos with childlike races, in which I'm sure you just called people who choose those races pedo's, but there is FFXI with Taru's, Wizardry, Blade and Soul, Dragon Sword and Phantasy Star Online 2 (with its extensive scale options), I believe there was something like that in Perfect World as well but can't remember. It seems more of a cliche now with child-like races, like anime jokes or something, so seeing this in XIV, I just don't see the wrong in it.
Except you can
For an 'unacceptable' trope, there sure does seem to be a lot of examples of it.
Also, you can blow the child soldier's brains out. Kinda happens when you don't pay attention and hit the C4 button at the wrong time. Don't worry. You're treated to a game over.
Also, again. XIV is not a super violent game. So.. Presentation, as you put. The kids would be fine here. If you think it is, please don't go play any of the games I mentioned. You wont be able to handle them.
Again, people are blowing the the violence in XIV WAY, WAY out of proportion. You'd think everything was made of plastic, given how much everything 'hurts' us.
Oh yes, Rusty Hearts, Grand Chase and Elsword. I miss Rusty Hearts :(

Sensing danger, Kairi's heart left her body and stowed away in Sora's for protection. In order to release Kairi's heart and return it to her body, Sora had to release his own heart, which he does... and it does.. Which also ends up creating Roxas.
Anyway.
I've been on the internet long enough to see how this is going to go. I'm going to reply, you're going to reply, back and forth, tit for tat.. I wont change your mind, and I know you will fail to change mine. I don't really have the energy for internet debates anymore, lol, so I'm going to toss out my final thoughts and move on.
FFXIV is no more violent or sexualized than your average anime aimed at teens. A child, or child like character, would be just fine here. The media will take one look at FFXIV, see it as a rather cartoony looking game, and not bat an eye. Further, creating a child like character does not encourage deviant behavior more than a FPS encourages school shootings. People are over hyping and going to extremes to prove their points for reasons I really cannot fathom. At the end of the day, it's all just data. No actual kids are harmed in this so.. Yeah.
If/when a more child like race is revealed, here's what I think will happen:
-People will flock to the forums to complain because XX race was not chosen instead - or they'll complain about.. anything, actually.
-People will want to play the race and will do so.
-Most wont really care and will continue playing as usual.
-A few will get so up in arms that they will quit (and nothing of value will be lost).
-The media will ask what Final Fantasy is and why there are fourteen of them, and otherwise not care because it really does just look a cartoon. A realistic one, but by today's standards, cartoonish nonetheless.
-The new race will be officially released. People will flock to the new race cause it's shiny. Some will settle into the new race while others will return to their old one.
-An even spread among the races will take place again... which the exception of Elves. Cause they're ugly and no one likes them.
tl;dr No two poops will be given.
Last I checked, getting blown up by a C4 doesn't even lead to ludicrous gibs even on adult soldiers. Like I said, this game treads around the issue well enough to get away with it (along with Paz's explosion death being mostly a blaze of glory rather than bloody splatter since it was, y'know, an internal explosion)
FFXIV is an MMO like I mentioned eariler, different from a single player game that limits the scope of what the player can actually do. It's a hole another mess when you have player implications as well as the image that SE wants their game to take on.
I also nowhere said it's an "unacceptable" trope, and I don't see how your link is even related to it. It becomes an issue when you try to use that trope as an excuse to put said characters in those situations (they're not kids, they're just people in kid's bodies). Quite frankly, none of those games are a problem, but they worked around it.

I'm sure this has been posted, but Gigantoads are the answer.
I don't think you really thought about what you said. I hope you didn't, i personally hope you didn't. You probably did though.

God who revived this forsaken thread?
Personally I dont see the issue, there are other MMOs, one that comes to mind is Mabinogi where you can choose to start your game as a kid / teen / adult and your character ages overtime. Granted I didn't get to far into the game myself and they may have since changed that from the years ago when I tried it but still it was done, now the success of the game is unknown to me though. Actually at a quick look kinda funny to see they have an adoption system where you and your spouse (another player) can adopt another player as a son/daughter. xD
I could see an age bar implemented in the future that changes characters overall look, be a great diversity addition to characters. Only problem with that would be the shear amount of design work involved, age is a dramatic appearence changer though it also depends on how many age gaps are implemented. I could see teenagers/young adults battleing. Hell, lots of jrpgs and games do that. Dunno about kids though...

You can clearly see a pattern in what he was saying if you paid attention. 1. "'no child race cause perverts' 2. "Better not have a gun class, cause you might attract those who want to shoot people." 3. "Can't have a mage class cause you'll attract arsonists."
quick fix = No child race cause you'll attract perverts. Simple and understandable.
People are taking things to the extreme with one idea, thinking of the worse possible scenario. Make sense now?
I think its funny people want to say no children for perverts but I can tell ya right now we have a lot already on the game. Honestly any type of person you can think of (cept maybe the amish lol) are on this game. Convicted felons, those pending, perverts/rapists/child molesters. Your not going to stop these type of people from playing these games and as I have said countless times already, if a person is acting childish and prancing around provocatively either report them or blacklist them. I can see some people wanting to play as child-like races just to be closer to the game, kids are most likely to pick child races as well cus after all whats better than being a child who is destined to save the world? Now should we see a 10yr old in skimpy swim suits? No, make it tasteful and let some gear be locked to race just like starter gear is. How do you handle the swimsuits? Just like some gear looks different depending on race, ding ding, we have our solution. Anything even close to risque alter the appearance to either add layers (like how they handled the outfits in Bravely Default for western release) or redesign them all together.
A passive stance on any of these things (except ninjas cause there awesome) should not be encouraged. That's what i took from the original post i replied to, as if he/she said "we can't do shit anyway about these issues, so what the heck lets just play as children anyway". The original post i replied to was a passive one and a pathetic one at that. Re-read the post one more time.
I wonder how roegadyn and highlander kids looks like o3o
Ah ok. I joined this thread around page 30 when I started commenting and responding to most of this stuff. I'm still confused in what you were trying to say exactly. So having a child race is bad because the person playing the race could be mentally ill or flat-out disgusting (idk what they consider Pedos)?
Umm....You are aware that there are homeless children in Iddylshire that fight and fend for themselves right? Even one of the children in Iddylshire hunt for food while his Father mopes around and ask random carpenters to help his son hunt. lvl 50 carpeter quest btw. Just so we're are on the same boat here, your still not comparing reality to a Final Fantasy game right? Child Soldiers in RL=ultimate taboo (no duh). Adults protect there young, of course, its a given, won't deny that, and I cant. Now with a record of games with kids that countlessly defend themselves against odds that will INDEED KILL THEM is immense, not giving any more examples, but I will point out this: If you have the ability to hold a sword in your hand and fight for what you think is right, who has the right to take away your freedom to defend yourself? Should a child stay there helplessly (in ff14) as they're parents are being mauled by a dragon? I doubt it. Look at Alphinaud and his sister.
All they do is fight for what they think is right. I'm not asking to play as kids who don't know what war is, that'd be stupid. Those young enough to know whats going on, with knowledge somewhat close to alphinaud and and his sister. Maybe not like that little child miqote because I can just imagine how weird it'd look fighting a huge primal. We're asking for reasonable young warriors to play as. Now I'll give an example: Sora from Kingdom Hearts or maybe even Kairii, Zidane from FF9 or the princess (cant remember her name but she's a WHM).
This thread is really negative, so here's something slightly relevant and comedic for most audiances just to brighten up the mood: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6LhPQ5ykb8
It's kind of sad that this thread has continued for 40 pages, despite the very good arguments against this silly idea. It seems that people really don't even have the tiniest understanding of what it could mean for the game if such a thing was included. Allow me to spell it out once and for all.
Ignoring the select few who would find ways to sexualize their underage characters, many countries have strict policies regarding the depiction of children in media. FFXIV is an online MMO which crosses country borders and therefore has a lot more restrictions than a single player Final Fantasy which can have some localization changes on foreign versions.
Now, the simple fact that it CAN be misused would raise the game's rating in certain countries and outright ban it in others. This is a simple fact. As an example, Tera has their Elin race which look very much like children, and they were made to censor the game to release it overseas because of the skimpy nature of some of the clothing items. These are characters which lore states are over legal age, but because of their appearance were censored anyway. When you have characters which are young in both appearance AND lore, that's an even bigger red flag. And I remind you that FFXIV is a game which gives us Colosseum armor and bikinis.
So no... a thousand times no. I don't even know why this is still a debate. Just no. Why must players ruin lovely little Easter eggs like this by trying to crowbar them into the game mechanics? It's debates like this that will more likely make them reluctant to add in nice touches like this in future.
Wasn't MGSV among other games with children in them sold over seas too? As if a series like Final Fantasy will be given a hard time for having a child hero fighting fantasy monsters.
Do I even have to bring up Dragon Ball now too which is overly popular in just about every country? Yeah there was translation difference for every country like Bulma having panties when she actually flashed her business in Master Roshi's face, and I think that one scene was removed due to taboo issues when Goku was young and patted bulmas nether regions because he never seen a female before ( they were clothed, but...Idk, just look at it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIo-DysAq4c) but nothing could dodge the fact that there were children fighting.
And yes there are games of Dragon Ball, and there's an mmo as well with a detailed story behind it all. Besides, who's to say that armor won't be adjusted for "no duh you can't have that" purposes. Example: The taffetta cloth bottom piece for lalafells. It isn't panties, its a fluff bottom thing (idk what they're called).
Btw I don't really think that's considered to be an Easter Egg. Children are a thing in this game. Iddlshire is riddled with them, some you even do quests for. One (SPOILER)
dies from hypothermia for Pete's sake.
And the game is rated R18+ because of that in Australia (if we didn't have that rating for games, it would either have been banned or heavily censored... or it is censored somewhere). A child dying from sickness or some other means (that is not graphically violent in one way or another) wouldn't affect the rating much, but a child being physically harmed, or even killed, would boost the games rating to MA, R or banned.
I looked about and see that Metal Gear Solid V has been censored in certain countries. So there you go.
Every country is different with its rating system. If a country says "no" to playable children, then that "no" will affect the entirety of FFXIV (kinda like when us Aussies forced Bethesda to change morphine into Med X in Fallout 3).
I'm pretty sure the R-18 Rating in Australia is very recent too so it's a good argument.
Before that we had quite many Games that couldn't release over there because of that.
On a side not the parts of MGSV that where censored where the Torture Scenes, not the Child Soldier part.
Aye, January 2013 is when it finally became a thing. Games like The Last of Us probably would have been banned or heavily censored if we didn't have the rating.
The children do die, one scene in the.... ok I swear you guys don't look this stuff up. here:
[SPOILER] Euthanasia of an Australian kid, game still sold over seas, with only one part censored in that game over in Japan which is a scene with Paz when her guts we're shown.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzAnaV0rkF0 [SPOILER]
So what countries ban games for playable children that can die in/be ko'd and respawned to fight again? Seriously dude, playing as a kid in a fantasy action environment (As real as most can possibly make FFXIV seem) would not change the games rating, unless they we're mauled alive with blood and guts spewing everywhere. Even the most ridiculously non-threatening moment when
(SPOILER) Raubahn gets his arm chopped off, its bloodless and greeted with a less excruciating cry for pain. (Your friggen arm is off, don't care how strong you are dude) (SPOILER END)
