Your thoughts on Astrolgian so far?

I'm level 55 AST. I'm missing a crappy force field, a buff extender, and a 4 second stun. Nothing game changing to me to where I'd rescind my thoughts about raid healing with AST when reaching 60.

I tried solo healing T9 for the funsies (we 7 manned with no level sync so everyone was in OP gear + echo buff). No matter which stance I used, AST fell short. I can heal the tank just fine, but as soon as raid wide damage happens, I have nothing. Aspected Helios' distance is WAY TOO SMALL. I basically have to individual cure every freakin' person in the party who wasn't in my range. Except now I have to waste more MP and a few extra GCDs when the tank could really use them. AST has 0 passive healing abilities aside from diurnal sect's nerfed regen nor do they have any potency boosting abilities for those heavy damage moments. Megaflare + Rage of Bahamut without echo and with level sync? GG. At least we can disable Gigaflare.

Yeah we really lack tools for emergencies. I think SE wants the AST's playstyle to involve time, i.e. extending the time of buffs, 'stopping time'. It's a cool concept but it's not really feasible when your party's taking a truckload of damage, which is basically most primals and raids.

If only they made Celestial Opposition literally stop time for like 5 secs, freeze everyone + enemies except yourself. I would love that.

THIS is what would be the game changer for AST's "OH CRAP" moment. Or if they removed the 25% nerf to your insta-cast CD. If they did this, AST would be a lot better. At least I can triple Helios or something to get the party topped off. It would have to be on a moderately short cool down, though. Being like 300 seconds or some BS wouldn't be enough. Some raids do massive raid wide dmg every 2 mins or so.

I wish you could use cards on people you see on the field. I'm seeing a lot of new green seedling players who would appreciate a Bole or Balance being thrown their way.

Why is our "big" area of effect damage reduction/regen (Collective Unconscious) channeled while it's the opposite for the other healers? It's completely useless when majority of the fights requires movement and tanks receiving spike damage

Why is our other "big" cooldown (Lightspeed) skill killing my party because of the 25% potency reduction? Shouldn't it be the opposite?

Why can't we use Shuffle out of combat?

The RNG on cards is way out of hand, I can draw Arrow/Spear for an entire fight completely killing the class. The expanded effect has a very short range for some reason, why?

Why does our AOE heals have shorter range than the other healers?

Why are some of the cards and enhancements to the cards like Arrow/Spear completely useless?

Why do Astrologian's have active skills that the other healing classes have as passives? Very lazy choice of design

Why can't we use Time Dilation on ourselves?

Gravity is totally useless as it doesn't apply any effect like Holy does, instead we got ANOTHER skill for that with the exact same effect for some reason with a sky-high cooldown. Why not integrate Stella into Gravity?

Aspected Helios area of effect regen and initial heal has a mind-blowing low potency, it's often not even worth considering using over Helios

Why did Square Enix decide on not having a beta? It's clearly obvious what happens when you don't have one.

As a returning player it's disappointing coming back and wanting to play a new class and find it inferior in every aspect compared to the other healers.

This I would like to disagree. I don't know why a lot of people think Diur Sect better, the Noct Sect brings your potency nearer to WHM, and the best thing in Noct Sect the instant "Adlo"-like aspected benefic (that is a 500 potency instant cure you have :D). You can heal why dodging and it's much better than in Diur Sect. You should give Noct Sect a try :D Aspected Helios is the one i find most useless right now, in both sect, probably only use it when I have to heal in Diur sect, I use Helios all of the time.

Beside, Lightspeed is not really complete garbage, use it while you have to move a lot and need to heal/esuna ppl. Sure it lower your potency, but if you can heal for a bit while moving, it better than not healing at all! Many of the boss fight right now require a lot of movement, and using lightspeed at the right moment may save you from a wipe.

I agree that Collective Unconscious is bad.

I think they don't want Spread to be used out of combat because the raid will be sitting there the entire day waiting for AST to draw the ideal cards before a pull. They want us to decide right in the middle of combat.

It's a lazy design that we can't use Time Dilation on ourselves, mainly because that will affect Luminous Aether and increasing our MP regen by twice 15sec + 15sec. All they have to do is make Luminous unaffected by Dilation.

Noct Sect is quite alright, you just got to start healing like a Scholar, i.e. before damage occurs. Time Dilation benefits Diurnal Sect a lot more due to extended regen so I myself prefer using that.

Well that's what I think anyway. If I remember correctly, I've read somewhere the Devs intended ASTs to have lower DPS than other healers. I'm fine with that but to throw in weaker heals and our biggest, shiniest level 60 crap skill just makes us incomplete. Among all the new jobs, I feel that ASTs need the most balancing followed by MCH.

Maybe it's not how Astro plays, maybe it's how others play with them. Tanks and DPS may only have experiences with them once every few hours for 30 minutes at a time. Been playing one since early access and I'm still trying to figure them out even at level 59. What can they do and what can't they do? Even when main'ing as an i130 SCH pre 3.0, Tanks don't seem notice when I burn through 6 stacks of aether to keep the party upright during mass pulls and then wonder what happened during the next when we wipe. That same tank may expect the same from Astros. That DRG just got an extended attack buff via cards, does he know now's the time to burn through his CDs to fully utilize it? How about some cross training and create a thread in the Tank and DPS forums linking them to this one. "Hey, guys. This giant globe thing? You may want to stay inside. Thanks."

This is an objective observation about AST healing that I can get behind, rather than "heals are weak, potencies suck, AST heals are bad", etc etc. Our base healing potencies are fine, it's the lack of a proper "oh shit" button that wrecks us. Simply removing the nerf on Lightspeed, or giving us our own 30% spell-based HP restoration boost ability that WHM/SCHs already get to counteract it would go a long way towards letting us be able to carry bads in the DF.

On a side note, I've had no problem healing anything as AST so far, but I admit, I doubt I'd have a problem healing them as any job, really. (I wish the forums would update my character already...I'm a level 58 AST, not a level 52 one. >__> Yes, I've done the terrible horrific rumored AST-killing dungeon known as the Vault with no issue, natch. Nocturnal Sect FTW.) While the job needs buffs, and a better "oh shit" tool than Lightspeed, I'm not seeing the "weak heals" that people are really describing. I play solely in Nocturnal Sect though, unless I'm paired in an 8-man with a SCH.

I don't want Nocturnal to be bad because I do prefer shield and bursts/regens since I mained SCH for 2 years but that stance is crap on ice.

I tried Sohm Al in it, nearly got my party killed. The shields are HORRIBLE, and spamming anything with the shield on it eats MP like mad.
It woulda been better if it crit'd and gave the galvanize effect.
What I do is in oh sh!t moments is I use LS and LA and Syn on another person, I actually use LA quite a bit no matter how good MP management I have
and I'm pretty good at it.
Who would use a near useless barrier over Regen? Tested, Diurnal is much better.

i haven an idea about making the RNG of AST cards a bit better for important situations

new skill: force draw
when using this skill you get a buff that lasts 10 sec. in this time you can use the skill again as often as you want without it going on cd
each time you use the skill (including the first time) you put your current card away and pull a new one. this can either be random or in order (looping through them)
when you use the card, the skill goes on cd and the buff vanishes
when the buff times out, the skill goes on cd and you keep your current card like usual
cd: something from 180 to 300 sec

this way, if you know there is something you need a specific card for, like a tank killer, or an important dps race, you can use this skill to force draw the one card you need, but you need to think about when to use it since it has high cd

I've been using diurnal for everything really, including the vault, and seems like it does better in boss battles. However, last vault I did had a drk that was doing huge pulls, keeping him alive was very stressful, I'm thinking if I was in nocturnal with the 5% potency increase and alternating cures and shields I probably would of done better.

Then the problem lies in the fact you try to use it as scholar shield :)) Don't use Noct sect as if you are on scholar (and I would suggest don't use Diur as if you are whm either). For me aspected benefic in noct sect is an instant cure that kind of "emergency" or "buy-me-some-time" heal. Like while i have to dodge mechanics and someone are low, i can AB them while moving, or while i need to draw card and don't want to risk the tank HP too much (draw card is not instant, it does delay a bit, so i can AB then draw or apply card buff).

Then I dunno when or how to use it unless I am in 8 man.
I def don't use it in mobs. I try to quickly use it before pulls for tank, then switch back.
Also Diurnal stance has my casts faster and I get like a 100hp potency booster with weak shield on Noct.
Just don't' see when it's a good time to ever been in that stance.
I accidentally had it on in end of Sohm Al boss and it did me no good.
Granted, I did not wipe, but with new people and stuff it was a chore...a fun chore! but it woulda
been smoother if I were not in that stance. I'll give it another shot though.

For more: Playing a bit more, I am content with our healing potencies and I still manage MP well and use LA whenever.
Got a MP replenish...might as well use it.
When things get spicy, LS is good but the fact that we're already have low heals, and 25% down is bad.
This needs to be removed immediately. The Vault is a waker-uper it seems so I won't have much say till then.
Atm I am in Moghell...

Atm im AST 51 and I really like the Nocturnal system to heal. I have both SCH and WHM lvled and as i saw in the high lvl dungeons (lvl 50), AST in nocturnal is like a SCh while in nocturnal mode. We can't do so much dps but i'm feeling comfortable healing and buffing this dungeons.
These days i'll start with lvl 51+ dungeons and i'll check if AST is in troubles to heal.

If SE fix a bit the card system i'll really love this job.

I hear alot of dps complaints, but in any dungeon 52+ you should be doing just fine. I most my parses so far I've been at 100 dps over the course of the dungeon, which is about half the tanks. Same as sch or whm would be. Just combust I/II + aero on high hp targets if under 2 mobs, or spam gravity on groups. Drop cleric during global CD, use insta heal + aspected benefic, then go back to dps.

If the tank is speed running I will admit it is harder to dps than whm with their divine seal regen, but we can't have it all.

Level 60 astro who used to be whm/sch here! I was reading through this post and decided to contribute my experience since I'm really enjoying this class at the moment.

I think some of you might be a bit too picky about the cards system, or are looking at it in a way it's not supposed to be considered. I healed through all dungeons and trials and while I know this doesn't count much - need to test the class in proper raids - I still think it helped me get the hang of the class. Cards buffs are not supposed to be game breaking, and honestly I wouldn't want them to be. They're there so you can give the party that little more oomph, and in turn they need to be reactive to make good use of it.
When I first started I was getting pretty pissed whenever I was drawing what I considered useless cards (dem spears), then I simply started realising that every little bit helps. I don't consider myself to be OMG BEST PLAYER EVAH or even a good theorycrafter, but I'm pretty sure that rather than going *draw* "naah" *shuffle* "meh" *have card sit there and go to waste*, it's best to balance the amount of royal roads and play them. If I draw a balance towards the end of any fight, I just spread it and use it later. If I draw bole towards the beginning of the fight, I might use it on the tank to add something more to his cds and use that time to dps, or maybe I can decide to RR it because I have a balance waiting to be used in my spread.
What I'm trying to say is, sure, you hardly ever get the cards you really want, but that doesn't make whatever you get useless. Try experimenting, try being more loose with them in short fights and use the downtime as the fight is about to finish or as you're running to the next enemies to try and prepare a nice RR. You'll have more fun and the others will spend more time with some buff up and less wondering what the hell this new class is doing, sitting there spinning the cards wheel.

As for Sects, I tend to use Nocturnal on trash and Diurnal on bosses, though that might change for different boss fights. I do admit that as a fresh 60 a couple of days ago I was almost traumatised trying to clear the new dungeons, but as I got more gear and as the people started learning how to avoid unnecessary damage, even with only a very few blue pieces, I can now safely speed run all of them while dancing in and out of CS to throw in dots and gravity and help with boss adds. I think the biggest issue at the moment is that everyone needs to learn how to play with both brand new classes and old classes who got major revamps. Instead, people who haven't rerolled, hit 60 and expect to faceroll new dungeons while still being in toilet paper armor, just because that's what everyone used to do until a week ago, when highly overgearing the content.

This said, I only have one issue with cards. When you read that Draw has 30s cd you think "wow, amazing, that means A LOT OF CARDS". Well, nope. 30s in a normal boss fight is actually a very long time, not to mention you will want to RR some cards as well. I'd love some kind of tweak to RR, something like reduced cd on Draw when used within x seconds after drawing a card.

I just want to say, Collective Unconscious is really fun to use in the Moby Dick fight when standing on him.

So much this. Even on WHM, oversized pulls while we're still barely geared is the biggest source of grief.

To the rest of your post... I would say the learning curve for WHM is, to me, relatively shallow. Mostly our abilities just make us better at what we already do and fill in some weak spots.

Compared to AST which is completely new. That said, I have not been having trouble with AST so far simply because I accept it for what it is: A high mobility, very support focused healer. It's not supposed to be "WHM, but with cards!" or even a card-dealing SCH. Yes, if the tank overpulls AST can't pop divine seal to deal with it, but SCHs have always had that trouble and Cure II spam... WHMs still run out of buffs and in not too long, MP.

Emergency Tactics can only be used once every 30 seconds, by the way, and they have no equivalent to "benefic II".

Exactly! I get the feeling some people were expecting astro to have all the big green numbers of a whm plus cards in diurnal and all the shielding and dps power of a sch plus cards in nocturnal. Well nope. It's a tradeoff. Whether it's worth or not will be tested once proper raids are available AND as people get more confident with the class. But you can't have, as an italian saying goes, a full wine barrel and a drunk wife :3

Ty for pointing this out, most significant thing said in this thread. Last dungeon I did the drk was pulling as if it were WP hard mode, over 10 lvl 57 mobs at once while he was in i133 gear and I'm in i135. I barely kept him alive and started to question my job
But you are right people are treating it like speed run lvl 50 dungeons.

Obviously gear plays a factor but lets be honest here for a second you could do those massive pulls in ARR in pre coil gear on WHM and SCH. Did it require everyone to know what they are doing? Of course. But what is being discussed isn't the difficulty of content in comparison to iLvL. People discuss the flaws of AST compared to the other 2 healing jobs.

that doesn't matter because dirunal has 5% haste, so they have the same throughput. I took one look at noctrune numbers and realized it was garbage with a capital G. a 500 potency heal that costs twice as much as benefic? nope, no thanks. dirunal aspected has a potency of 850.

Diurnal Aspected Benefic is only 790 potency, over 18 seconds...where are you getting 850 from? Nocturnal Aspected Benefic is an "effective" (ie, heal + shield) potency of 525, but doesn't require nearly as long to see that effect (in fact, it works instantly >_>).

To prefer one is fine, but at least have some clue of how the other works.

Now that my AST's in a good shape I've started leveling up my Monk. Have you guys been on the receiving end of AST cards?

Well in Sohm Al I was bestowed with Arrow (+10% attack speed) and it was a somewhat noticeable increase in speed. When it ended I was like 'can I get some more?'. Receiving one is so addictive, it doesn't quite turn you into superman but when it wears off you feel the difference. Suddenly that AST in that dungeon run looked like Santa Claus to me, handing out sweet presents and we snatched it with our grubby hands. But then that same AST threw me a Spire (TP reduction) during a single-mob pull and placed a Bole on the Summoner.

Looks like Santa Claus needs more training.

haste affects hots/dots now. have a clue how the other works etc

nocturne is horribly inefficient and not even a good emergency heal since benefic 2 does that better while still being more mp efficient

Skill/Spell speed affect how hots/dots work NOT Haste. It's the reason why Fey Glow/Fey Light were changed from Skill/Speed speed to Haste. WHM PoM does still increase Hot/Dot healing and damage however since it increases Spell Speed.

Haste only affects your cast times...you're thinking of skill/spellspeed, which is not the stat that Diurnal modifies. Hence, your earlier comment about the throughput being as equivalent as Nocturnal's throughput was also inaccurate. Please research carefully before spreading misinformation.

So far, I like AST a lot, but as some people have brought up, there's a few discrepencies:

Nocturnal stance. While I see where people are coming from with regards to thinking it's weak in terms of pure potency, I think a bigger issue with it at the moment is because of its weak potency it offers very, very little in regards to opportunity cost. Using aspected benefic in noct stance gives you a brief instant shield, yes, but that shield is typically eaten up by a single auto attack shortly thereafter, before your GCD has even worn off. This is in contrast to scholar, where throwing an adloquium out will buy you plenty of time, especially if it crits.

What I'd like to see for Nocturnal Stance is a passive buff along the lines of "Moonlit serenity" or some such, that stacks up every two seconds, up to 5 stacks. Each stack grants your subsequent aspected shield an additional 10 potency per stack. At maximum stacks, aspected benefic would actually be slightly stronger than a non-crit adlo (And a crit adlo would be more powerful than aspected benefic) and it would give AST the niche of having a stronger AoE shield (190 potency) than scholar which is already predominately single target based. (Though that has changed some in the expansion) it would discourage spamming your aspected benefic (Which you shouldn't do anyway) and encourage more smart usage of it. It would also give noct sect a decent "power" button to use, as that's currently a big thing lacking for AST, and it would appear they want Noct to be more of a heavy hitting healer. Just a thought, something that would give Nocturnal a buff without just straight buffing it.

I also think they need to make Celestial Opposition and Time Dilation change their effect for Noct's shields slightly, instead of increasing their duration (Which is a straight benefit for diurnal regens), increasing their potency by a certain amount. (50 potency for Celestial Opposition, 100 for Time Dilation? Not sure.) Also Collective Unconscious. The fact that we have to channel it. What are you doing SE. If they want the same feel, allow us to perform actions during it, but we must stay within the bubble for it to remain.

The inability to use Spread out of combat also drives me up a wall. I see no reason for it, other than to make it inconvenient to try to set up effective combos before a boss pull. I would love to be able to do an expanded royal road with spear to maximize its effectiveness, but it's impossible to consistently set up. That's fine mid combat, it's a part of the class, but the fact of that matter is that your very first card draw is going to make far too much of a difference. Drawing a spear, balance, or arrow bumps up everyone's efficiency during their opening burst to the nth degree, while drawing bole, ewer, or spire is almost entirely worthless. It's not a good feeling.

This is all speaking in the hypothetical, and don't get me wrong, I don't think AST (And particularly Noct sect) is necessarily bad right now, but I do think it needs a minor buff and more synergy with its own cooldowns.

Monk main reporting in! After playing around with Scholar near the end of ARR, I was pretty excited to get my hands on Astro - tossing cards around and star magic? Who doesn't wanna do that? . After playing around with it (mid 30s atm) I haven't been disappointed at all though the job definitely feels pretty barebones at the moment. The biggest sticking points for me are the length of the cooldown on Draw, Lightspeed, MP cost.

To me Astro feels like it's supposed to be a high speed heal/buff job - the "machine gun" support in a way - but Draws' cooldown feels a little too long to weave between all the healing. Maybe shorten it to 20sec?

Lightspeed really needs the most work. A 25% hit to potency for "instant" heals is a bit much especially when Astro isn't the stronger healer in most situations and you still have to wait on the GCD. This ties right in with spell cost. It seems pretty counterintuitive to have the cost of the spells where they are if you're supposed to toss em out at high speeds, which is very noticeable when you have to heal a bunch of people at once or if someone takes multiple big hits in a row.

Right now Astro plays fine as is, but it really needs a "tuneup" to truely show its stuff

From what I've played so far I love Astrolgain and won't mind learning to heal with it. <3 It's just too much fun! XD

So far, only 2 major things that could make AST be viable without changing much: MP regeneration and faster Drawing.

Faster drawing would allow a lot more buffs to offset the poor RNG. Around 15s should be sufficient, since royal road has 15s too. Also, I thought spread and shuffle should be at 15s as well - that way you're even less in the mercy of RNG in tight situations.

MP regeneration should have been the best out of the 3 healers due to its more frequent healing required, I'm really baffled that it's worse than a WHM now! (with WHM getting new MP regen). Higher MP regeneration would probably offset the weaker healing and put the job in a competitive place with quantity over quality.

AST should be the fastest healer out of the 3, there's no need to increase any potencies, just make the class faster and mp efficient!

To the other AST spells: I really love Synastry and Time Dilation so far. Although I have mixed feelings about Collective Unconscious, that would require some work. Same as Lightspeed - it should AT LEAST restore MP. I haven't got the level 60 spell yet but it does sound extremely underwhelming - a seperate "stop" status would have made it a lot more interesting as well as extending ALL buffs for 5s would have made it a worthy level 60 spell imo - other jobs get quite broken attacks too, so why was this one left out that badly? Were they afraid of making them too OP?

a bit fustrating having balance on royal road and only popping TP and MP reduction back to back.......grrrr

that's good to know, but even at 790 potency dirunal aspect is an efficient and useful skill for softening damage on a tank while nocturne not efficient or as effective at burst healing as benefic II.

Totally agree with you Shikiseki. I dunno maybe give us a mana recup whenever we use a card ?

About collective Unconscious : a little tip : you can cast it, and if you get hit by a tornado or like the Ravana limit break => it won't stop the cast of the spell. It's still weaker than its counterpart but that's still something nice to know.

That's the point, it's supposed to act like asylum or sacred soil but you are the medium in which it's cast.

EDIT:

Oh now I get what you mean, like if you're hit by a knockback it won't interrupt it.

Sharing my experience - I am lv 55 AST now (I was SCH on ARR).

So far, I feel that AST healing is fine
... when party does not take extra damage from avoidable mechanic. (it's still do-able)
... when the tank does not pull more than he can handle. (I try to spread Bole to counter this case)

I love the concept of buffing people.
I have spent most of my time looking at the draw cooldown. >_<
I just wish that its CD would be lower to 20/15 second as I prefer buffing people - to do the dps than do it myself,

Also, shuffle should prevent you from drawing the same card. 30 sec draw CD is already long and it's not cool when spear keep appearing even after I used up RR and shuffle.

I will update once I had a chance on primal extreme.
