well its a leadup to flirting lol I'm crafting and a guy avatar comes makes goo goo eyes or grovel at your feet. :D It could be a guy giving me a flower, guess I should be happy someone is noticing me :P

I could tell you I am a walking Alien woman with three eyes , two noses, two mouths and four arms that you would not be able to say is not true. There is no way to know for sure unless you know the person IRL or have seen her or him live on webcam and even then, who says the one that is playing is the one you see ?...this is a game anyone can be anything why you bother about male/female is beyond me...

If you dont want to have surprises, just take people for what their charactere portrays and dont ask for more or anything of the sort....you will get a peace of mind

You shouldn't have to feel ashamed for choosing to wear skimpy outfits in real life, let alone in a video game, and it is by no means an implication of your irl gender. I hate that argument almost as much as the "all girls are guys, online" cliche.

Girl = female child. I don't personally know any who play this game.

There are no girls on the internet. Only guys and FBI agents.

Kidding aside, guys can talk like girls and girls can talk like guys on the internet. Not every female player talks like "omg hiiiii how r uuuuu" or with 1000 and 1 emojis. An example would be me (up to you to believe that, I don't care either way), because of my IGNs (Neunmond or Neuflune) and the way that I usually talk, I'm mistaken for a guy. I don't correct people, it doesn't bother me. I'm here to play the game just like everyone else and I don't care about genders/sexes.

Edit because I didn't answer the thread title:

To identify a player, you'd have to spend a lot of time with them. You can't just tell from a glance.

(But even if you spend a lot of time with them, there's no guarantee that you'll ever know.)

I remember you from other threads, you like to argue strongly and steamroll people. I won't be steamrolled by your bluster and ignorance. Statistics are how you quantify research, and how you prove a hypothesis. Psychology is a medical science, you talked of trusting academics earlier, so you can hardly dismiss psychology with a wave of your hand now. Not to mention the obvious point that choice of avatar gender is clearly something that psychology would illuminate.

My point is that I have evidence proving you wrong. Not every guy plays a female toon to wear skimpy clothes. And you should see the skimpy outfit I wear as arcanist. My point is, don't judge people, it's not your place. And who the hell cares if the folks behind the toon is male or female? It doesn't affect YOUR gameplay, so stop worrying about it.

ROFL Indeed. I think my favorite part of all this is she doesn't claim to be a girl in game, but when members of the FC get on Teamspeak and hear her voice they are like "Wait what??? Who is this???" Her usual reply: "I am the wife of Faelandaea. Don't get any ideas."

Well, I am definitely not in denial, so not all guys fit this category (see above for my reasoning). But I definitely understand where you get your view from, due to how most people do act these days. My sweetie maintains the "one of the guys" status simply to not be harassed by guys like that. She doesn't deserve harassment. She doesn't deserve sexual expletives or anything of the like being driven at her because of the fat (and yes it is fact) that 98% of the male population in game think that when a girl plays a game that it's to pick up guys or impress them.

And when i am in game, myself, as far as I am concerned, all avatars in my circle of friends are guys . . . because we're all friends and we hang out, and I could care less what their gender is IRL. To me it's just pixels on a screen, and as long as the player behind the keyboard does their job so I can do mine - well - beyond that it really doesn't matter, does it?

As far as pursuing romance in a game, which I honestly think was a huge motivation behind this thread getting started in the first place (like it or not, OP, that's what it looks like), I think it is always generally a bad idea. We game to get away from real life drama. This includes relationship drama. I have a friend in game who's been trying really hard to get married, supposedly because he just wants "a role-play partner to adventure with", and he apparently has a GF in real life . . . yet when someone else took him up on the offer to marry, then he later on found out that the person was a guy in real life, he called off the "engagement". This obviously confused me because I figured they were doing it for the Chocobo or whatever. If you have someone IRL, then why worry so much about finding a girl player in game?

All of this just keeps adding up to trouble. Really, people should quit worrying about romance and gender in a game - just equip your skills, do your bloody jobs and treat an MMO for what it is, a teamwork cooperative environment where we advance together, not romance together.

As someone who read everything in this thread since this morning since it was a light day at work up until now that I got home from work I can conclude that....this thread never made any progress even after 39 pages. Just plain ol bickering about each other's beliefs. Aaahhhh.....*sips wine* just another day in the forums...

Oh op: how do you find out? Easy. you can't unless you meet the person. You want reality here in final fantasy...where a lot of the people here are running away from reality. This is their haven please respect that. This is such a nice place to know people for their personality instead of how they look and such. Maybe you'll be confident enough about your "preference" one day that you wouldn't care if you meet an amazing girl or guy.

But..I'm not trying to prove anything here. The only reason I post this topic is because I'm just curious and would like to know and learn about it. I'm also not misjudging anybody at all. Well to be honest i think the simplest answer, the one you knew all along is the only way, just ask someone no harm in asking. And as for the skimpy outfits = blokes. Not 100% true i like to dress my char fully clothed sometimes, as i want a sensible looking Heroine. Not some reject from the cat walk. I also have a freind who makes her bard dressed in the most little as possible. So the whole skimpy outfit works for both genders.

I think all the basement gamers need to go outside long enough to see how some girls are dressing in real life before determining that only men are going to dress their female characters skimpy. Skimpy styles such as short skirts or whatever are all part of fashion trends that trend towards that 'risque' look and it is popular with some crowds of girls. Who's to say female gamers wouldn't want to do that with their game characters too?

In fact I can think of some examples of why some girls would like to be fashionable and sometimes risque with their characters I mean these game characters are like dolls to us and can also represent ourselves in this digital world ya know? I am personally a fashion freak with my character and make a lot of crafters happy with my glamor and dye purchases lol and my fashion choices range from conservative to mini skirts and what not just depends on my mood :P.

It's ok to be curious. If you simply ask, "Guys, why do you play female toons and vice versa?" that's fine. But when you start inserting your own opinions (whether true or not), it's no longer a question, and can quickly become an argument or offend ppl. That's where you misstepped.

FTR, I play a femme Miqo'te cuz she's named after my RL cat Hexy. My hubby plays a femme Lalla cuz he thinks it's funny to have an adorable little girl tank a huge monster.
