You didn't give it a chance because its not a game demo, its in beta. It isn't the final product with all content included with eleven years of updates to compare it to XI & WoW and Co.
Did you know they have plans to include new content? PvP? possible new races? more character creation options? new areas? Swimming underwater? expansion packs? DX11 client with HD textures and revamped lighting? don't forget the Chinese servers.. its just the beta!

And lets not use the old version of XIV as an example since service ended last year, its dead.

Hello, my FFXI name is Kaeviathan and i'm an FFXI addict. I'm 26 years and I've been playing this game for more than 7 (probably 8) years now in the cerberus server. I enjoyed my time playing this game, i had the pleasure to switch pleasantries with many players from different parts of the world. Though recently things became different since abyssea came out, the aspect of a social game has changed. It's become more of "I got what i needed, so ima get the %#*! out. Good luck!" attitude. FFXI is the first and only MMORPG i played so far, and i plan to keep it that way, ONLY MMORPG. For atleast the first 5 years of playing this game, i had no self control whatsoever as to play this game or not. Automatically the first things i do when i got home was to turn on my laptop and start playing. There were nights that i would ditch hanging out with friends, and instead preferred to make progress in the game. I also ditched alot of classes lol. But good thing that It's a little different now. I am older and in the process in getting my priorities straight (studying to obtain a career as a public accountant). I am studying way more, and less FFXI. My grades and my study habbits has changed dramatically (I'm a smart muther#^>£! Hahaha). So as to the question if I plan to leave FFXI over for FFXIV, the answer is no. Don't get me wrong, I would looove to play this game, but past experience has taught me that this will consume a huge chunk of my life, not all, but still noticeable. And especially now since I feel very comfortable on the direction which my career path is leading. So me choosing not to play FFXIV is all about self control. I can't risk getting hooked to another MMORPG, especially now ><.

Smart choice lol. Should always take care of your rl priorities first.

Though I am happy to say, XIV is nowhere near the time sink XI is in terms of getting things done, which is why it appealed to me (I'm 32 years old, so yeah, nowhere near the time I had when I played XI from 2003-2010).

When I played XI, it was always "ugh I need to quit, but I know if I quit now I'll have to spend all this time joining an ally and coming out here to farm" etc. It was hard for me to pull away, or just go afk and not feel like I have to be checking my game every 5 min to see if anything changed.

With XIV, I can leave my pc, conscience free xD If I only have an hr or so to play, I'll log in, go do some levequests for exp, or craft a couple of things and throw them on my mule/retainer for monies, and that's that.

Going to FFXIV for now, has a lot of appeal to me. I may return to FFXI in the future once the dust has settled a bit... assuming my friends are even around. Either way SE has my money.

It doesn't take much to know when someone is special. After 5 minutes if the person is alive and well you have a keeper, if they are dead and obnoxious then toss em like two day old leftovers.

I've been playing FFXI for close to 8 years. Met my hubby in Windy 7 years ago.
FFXI will always have a place but I log in and find nothing I'm interested in doing.

We tried Wow, DnD, and a few others always keeping FFXI payment going and coming back to..

Last week my hubby for the 1st time said he would be willing to leave FFXI behind. I was shocked and happy, I like FFXI but I don't think they have any clue what they are doing. On one hand they come out with content that makes everything easy.. then they come out with content that no one can 1% can do... then change.

I've written off SE, I'll play through to the last stories of FFXI but they got tossed into the EA's EABODADIAF pile along with the XBone and NAMCO (R.I.P. ACE WOMBAT).

They ran the FF, DQ, and other properties series steadily into the ground. They got my pocket book on this, but no more. They broke the trust and clearly have no right to earn it back.

After all, FFXI was not broken at the time, why fix it?

Instead, they rebuilt the game which did fail due to the people in charge messing it up, and now, it looks like a good and promising game, I have no doubt there are many others like yourself, but in my opinion, at least play the beta or something free of it if you can, try it out, what do you have to lose but a little time? On the other hand, what do you have to gain if it is a good game, and FFXI dies? A new home, with potentially many of the friends you once knew on here, or another world of Final Fantasy in which to dive into and experience with people all around the world. In my opinion, the gain far outweighs the risks involved.
agree with most of your points-except the 1st one. XI is a great product (a loyal player base after 11 years is testimony to that), but it IS broken. and no, I'm not talking about all the whining about this job or that job or this piece of gear; I'm talking about its incompatibility with modern hardware and software. It is broken if you can't use it on equipment! I'm trying to repair one of my old computers so I still have a machine that can run this without the random game freezes every 40-120 minutes since my current gaming PC (which is nonetheless 4 years old itself) is too modern to run it.

then call it XVI or something, if they are still calling it XIV then it is still based on that piece of trash that was so bad they killed it themselves

Same world (albeit different landscapes since it was, literally, blown up), same NPCs, yada yada yada. XVI would mean an entirely different game, world, story, etc etc. ARR is basically XIV part 2 since the devs, instead of shutting it down and rebooting it, made the changes by creating an intricate story about the whys and the whos. A very very smart way of doing it imo, and one that created a lot of loyalty from those of us who stay and played it through and well beyond final save until the very end when our screens went black and that fantastic "end of an era" scene played for the first time, making even the most manly man or in your ls, cry. Why? Because even though the game was awful, the devs made us love our world much like many ppl love vana'diel (whether they will admit it or not).

Think of it like ffvi pre-destruction and post-destruction of the world. One game, one story.

Whether you like to admit it or not, the new devs took that trash they were given and slowly made it into something wonderful. SE has good people on their team who can tell a good story. You just cant be so stubborn that you miss out. And if you are and do, well then, that loss is your own.

ARR is basically FFXIV-2 in a sense. SE never makes 2 FF games share the story, never has happened so far as I know if they were both numbered games, sure some other ones have like tactics and such I think, but no numbered FF game has shared a story with another number except potentially FFVII and FFX. So to name FFXIV as FFXVI would make no sense from the series standards seeing as it takes place in the same world and is basically a continuation of the first games story, just without the same gameplay, think of it like FFXIII in that respect, where the second was much better than the first, even if they share the number and world.
