I'm not so jazzed about the idea of the already short handed dev team working on porting ffxi to another soon to be out dated Sony device like the Vita though. what is the expected lifespan on the vita before something replaces it? 1... maybe 2 years?

Huh? The Vita just came out this year and its cousin lasted for more then 5 years (Hell still selling more then Vita in Japan right now because there isn't enough games on it yet to support the price). Its not like the iPad where a new stronger version comes out each year, what's there should last a while, especially coming from the development and publishing company that still won't let the PS2 version of this game die :P. Seriously I'd easily play FFXI a lot again if it was on the Vita, there is an untapped market for MMO's on portable systems that they would be wise to get in to. A new playable format on top of revitalized UI with touch capabilities (which would mean a lot easier porting to Windows 8 as well I might add!) and a new expansion is just what this game needs to keep chugging along.

I don't have any inside information about what apple / microsoft / <insert vendor here> have up their sleeves, but I would not be surprised at all to see cell phones and tablets popping up all over the place with better specs than the vita in the next year or so.

Well its a good thing the Vita isn't either one of those! Playstation Vita is portable console, there is one defined spec that lasts till the next iteration which is intrinsically designed to not show up for 4-5+ years. There are revisions, but they rarely involve making the device more powerful, just more efficient (Longer battery life, slimmer design, couple extra superfluous accessories etc. but the actual power like RAM, CPU, GPU etc. do not change till the next generation.) Their only competition is the Nintendo 3DS in this type of format. The Vita already has significantly better specs then the PS2 (And more RAM then PS3!) so as long as they keep the PS2 support, there is absolutely zero reason not to try and tap the Vita market when its a platform that should be supported for several years.
