it'd not make much sense, if you've done WoTG Windy quests, you'd realize that male mithras are rare.
this would surely invalidate mihgo's (sp) and the other female mithras' infatuation with him.
While I'm usually one who's all for lore-backed reasoning, the gender-restricted races is not one I can get behind. Male mithra exist, there could potentially be a lore-based reason for male mithra being more common in these lands.
A short and simple possible reasoning: Perhaps they're simply territorial back in their homeland, so each area only has one dominant male. Females there would obviously see males as less common. Male "cubs" may be cloistered away by the males, then 'exiled' when they come of age to find a place of their own. In these lands, they're simply adventurers like the rest of the races. They have no dominance over an area, no prides. Their homeland may not have many areas left to divide among males, so a mass exodus to these lands would be logical for the young males who can't create their own place.
There you go.
Now, for me, I'd only switch races if the playable male mithra were less cat-like (Lehko was wimpy and entirely undesirable for a male character model - may as well play a female mithra if they're all like that, IMO) and more Lion-like with "manes" & they should be somewhere between Elvaan & Galka in size. (Khimari-like, but not blue) There you go. That's my take on it. (not that I think it'll ever happen, with the current state of development)
To be perfectly honest I would not care in the slightest. It's a non-issue.
Personally, I wouldn't mind invalidating the game's lore at all. Seriously, who cares if it contradicts what's already written in the story? I certainly don't. Gameplay is more important than story.
Besides, like AyinDygra pointed out above, it wouldn't be too difficult for SE to come up with an explanation for a sudden population boom. And since WotG happens in the past, this population boom could easily occur in present-day Vana'diel without really conflicting with the WotG storyline.
Sure, some of the story dialogue might feel a little odd with NPCs being surprised to see Lehko Habhoka, but then not acting surprised at all to the player being a male mithra, but I vote that such oddness would be a minor and largely inconsequential issue, and not worth making a huge fuss over.
If we have to choose between maintaining consistency in the story and adding awesome gameplay features, we should always choose the latter over the former.

In the past yeah, the argument could be they no longer are.
As for Male Mithra, I'll just go over to XIV with the big update. It's not going to be long before it's hugely better than this game. Even if only update wise. I'd much rather a game that can improve over one which can not.
Perhaps while they are at it, we should have a female Galka too. Then all will be fair and each race can be female or male.
We will see about that - so far FF14 is still a real chore to play, even more than FFXI. There is only so much Yoshi can do with a craptacular engine. He will be better off scraping and rebuild for version 2.0 coming next year, which means it will be another year before version 2.0 is playable. So we know FFXI will be fine for another 2 years minimum since 14 will still be craptacular for at least another 2 years.
I do hope I am totally wrong about 14 - mainly because SE knows how to make fast pace engaging battle system and did a really wonderful job with FFXIII-2. So its not for lack of talent or for not being able to create one. Let's hope all those talents are learning from things that works wonder in the past and improve it for the future.

The difference there is that there aren't any female Galka, since Galka reproduce through reincarnation, whereas male Mithra do exist, but are simply rare. Explaining a sudden population boom without jumping the shark is easy; explaining the sudden manifestation of something which never existed is not.
Um, yeah, that's exactly what they're planning on doing with FFXIV: scrapping almost everything and rebuilding the whole game, including the engine running it.
