If they turned off the reactors, and no earthquake occured, then they would have been without sufficient power for no reason. The earthquake isn't even what caused the most damage, it was the tsunami.
found some data tracking significant events (6.0) and they're pretty common I guess. Japan is touted as one of the more active areas, and leaders in the technology for construction and what-not for safeguarding against the damage.

The sesmic tracking for the US shows that there are virtually continual minor events though here...I imagine it's even more common in Japan. I've seen minor shocks happen in the middle of interviews and people just act like it's normal rumble from an L-train or something.

That is very true sir that's why I live in the mid-USA so I don't have to worry about Giant waves crushing my world. And yes I know that was a rude statement I just made, but honesty is usually jerk-ish
Even if there were an abnormal amount of siesmic activity leading up to this event, on 3/9/11 there was a 7.2 earthquake in Japan. That is a large earthquake in itself, and I dont think anybody would have thought it was just a foreshock for the strongest earthquake to hit Japan in recorded history, and the tsunami to follow.
To be old and wise, you must first be young and stupid.
My point about billing/servers was really if SE has any plans to actually move the servers if the rolling outages continue for signicantly over three weeks as has already been indicated. I find it remarkable that a global company suchas SE has had its MMO brought to a halt without any sort of longer term plan to relocate, if for example heaven forbid the reactor does go up. SE really seem to have put all the eggs in one basket so to speak, Imean other that for convience is there any reason the servers arent actually in the areas they serve? i.e a EU site, US site and a JP site. Especially when you consider that FFXIV is pretty much dead at least in the medium term and FFXV is apparrently in trouble too.

The problem is that apparently you don't know how to make a pattern. You look at one month's worth of earthquakes and ask why no one saw the pattern, when you can't go by one month alone. You need to look at the months/years before and see if the earthquake rate for that month was unusual.
