Warning: Best Buy sells EU versions to US customers

Watch out for Best Buy. I bought the game from them, and got the Ultimate Collection that preceeded Abyssea Edition (totally my fault) and an EU version even though the website gave no indication that it wasn't US version (totally Best Buy's fault.)

    Now I'm pretty screwed.

Before I noticed that it was an EU version I bought the Abyssea collection from Steam, thinking I could upgrade and get the Abyssea stuff that way: No luck. Steam sold me a US version (like they should) but SquareEnix customer support somewhat huffily explained that there was no way I could use that steam copy I bought to enable the Abyssea on my main (EU) account, so that's $10 wasted right there.

Further, I can't figure out any way to enable the Abyssea expansions without paying some ridiculous amount of money. They're giving everything away for pretty near to free in the US, but if, like me, you're locked in to the EU version, it's all crazy expensive.

Best Buy isn't returning my calls. SquareEnix customer support coudln't drop me fast enough once they figured out that my issue wasn't anything they were interested in helping me with, and that's about where it sits.

So: Be warned. Do not buy games from Best Buy. They will screw you, sell you out-of-region versions, and then refuse to answer emails about it.

    Teegrins, Jumpp!

The general discussion section would be better if you just want to discuss/warn people about this, and since this is Account/Billing related, the Support Centre/Center would be the only place to go for (which it would seem like you have already done).

I always thought that the region related things regarding FFXI were/are completely and utterly complicated and cause more harm than it should. It is unfortunate but what can we do~

If the codes obtained via Steam really are also tied-in to these issues, I would assume that you could obtain the codes for a different region if you were to ask (and for the same price though I don't remember if it is the same there as it is for SqEX, where they charge the same amount in $ as they do in € which doesn't seem exactly fair, but I digress). That may be way too optimistic of a way of thinking though...

Anyhow, it's never fun hearing/reading about bad customer service.
I do hope you will get it sorted somehow.

    Best of luck!

Are you sure you have an EU version of the game? Best Buy is a US-only company, so it can't sell EU versions.
You can tell for sure by going into the registry and look for
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\PlayOnline or
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\PlayOnlineEU

(Do NOT make any changes there.)

If it's the first, you got a US version (\PlayOnline), and it's merely a Steam install problem. (There are guides for that, but it basically boils down to obtaining the code from Steam and using it on the existing game, without installing from Steam.)
If it's the second (\PlayOnlineEU), did you by chance buy a PRE-OWNED version? That's the only way BB might be tricked into selling an EU version in the US.

The only disk versions I found on the BB site were pre-owned. The DLC one--UC (2008) for $9.99--is only sellable to US residents. So...I'm guessing if it was a disk version, it was pre-owned. If it was the digital download, then it SHOULD have been US version.
