PS2 harddrives only come in one size and that is 40 GB. As Kristal mentioned, they're "custom" and only the ones sold by SONY will work. But they're "your OLD" and popular SEAGATE (ST320015) or MAXTOR (4D040H2 or 2F040L0) 5400 RPM model PATA drive from 2001. The cheapest kind they could find back then ... D: Lame, you know.

The Playstation 3 system update has been put in place. I just got it today.

If you play FFXI on the models of PS3 that allow that, and you do not have enough free space for the 9gig extension either because you do not want to delete things to make room, or because you have the 20gig HDD which just is not big enough, you can continue to play FFXI for now by NOT ACCEPTING the PS3 system update. You will not be able to sign on to Playstation Network, but FFXI will continue to run.

At some point later, SE will extend the actual FFXI block for the PS2 version in a Playonline Viewer Update. At that time, it will no longer be possible to play FFXI on any PS3 that has not accepted this system update. But until that time, you should be able to continue without the PS3 system update if you wish to do so. The Playonline Viewer Update will also be updating the size of the block on a real PS2 HDD at that time.

There is no way to back out the PS3 system update once it has been installed.

And remember that all of this still only applies to the older model PS3 systems that have PS2 backward compatibility. The newer models will get the update too, but since FFXI can't be played on those systems, it doesn't matter.

    This all sounds so convoluted.

I have to wonder if just making an app to help people search nearby dumpsters for discarded yet functional PC's would have been a more efficient solution for all parties involved.

the update news has been out for a while. if you have ps3 20gb backwards compatible you need to upgrade your HD. if you don't then you can't play. only other system thats backwards compatible is the 60 which is unaffected.

the 20 GB, 60 GB and the 80 GB PS3 with 4 USB ports are backwards compitable, the 80 GB with 2 USB ports is not
and the PS2 has only ever had a 40 GB HD
I got the 40 GB HD with FF XI the day it was released in USA, March 2004, think 28th if I remember
I did and do play mostly on PC
atm play on PS3, 60 GB
have FF XI for PS2 (Installed on PS3), 360 and PC

SE has announced that the June 13/14 update to FFXI will be expanding the size of the FFIX Data stored on the PS2 HDD.

This will require that the expansion of the emulation of the PS2 HDD on the PS3 (which is all that was being expanded at the original date of the earlier posts in this thread) must be in place.

If users of PS3 systems have not previously accepted the PS3 system update that did the increase in the space available for FFXI, you will need to do so before you can play again following the maintenance on June 13/14.

Users of PS3 systems with the 20gig HDD (or other systems without enough free space to complete the expansion of the PS2 HDD emulation) that have not accepted that PS3 system update have been able to continue to play FFXI on their PS3 system until now. That will end on June 13 at 2pm PDT when this maintenance begins.

Sounds like it will no longer be (legitimately) possible to play FFXI on a system with OtherOS still available.

the PS2 hard drive partition size was never hard coded in the original model PS2, I dont know where you got this information but, it would have been a difficult and costly mistake, even if it was firmware it could easily be corrected by a software update set to write the firmware, you should also be aware that it was Square that urged/convinced Sony to bring the drive to the USA, as it was Sony had no intention to release it due to lack of software, SE were probably given everything they needed to fix any oversights from Sony, the PS2 hard drives were all 40GB in the USA, I'm not sure about the Japanese models, I suspect they were also

the idea with the Japanese PS2 having the drive outside of the PS2 connected with a card close to the size of a credit card was a smarter design, but SCEA thought if they released that design people would just import the Japanese drives and they would just lose money

As I recall, the problem is not the memory capacity of the drive itself (my PS2 still has a bigger drive than my Xbox 360, after all), but that Sony policy, until recently, limited each game's partition on the drive to a certain maximum size, one that XI has been (in)famously bumping up against recently. This change to expand XI's presence on the drive comes on the heels of Sony getting rid of that policy.

If you want to (legitimately) publish on a console, you have to follow all of the console maker's rules. The 360 version has to go through Xbox Live, and the PS2 version had to deal with arbitrary size restrictions.

I'm really not sure what you are referring to if you are talking about my post.

I can only guess you have mis-read the post. The drive size on a real PS2 has always been 40gig.

The post I made refers to the emulated PS2 HDD size on a PS3. Look very carefully at the last character of that last acronym. It is a 3. As in THREE.

That emulated drive size was indeed increased by 9gig (from 12gig to 21gig) by a PS3 system update that was released by Sony around the time of my first post in this thread which was done on February 7, 2012. It will have only happened on PS3 systems that have PS2 backward compatibility and also have FFXI installed.

That portion of the expansion had NOTHING to do with a real PS2.
