All this about a 20GB PS3 got me thinking... wasn't the 60GB PS3 the only one that was backwards convertable?

P.S. Any specifics on why FFXI is suddenly increasing in size by 75%?

Because they're simply running out of space? Sony enforced a partition size limitation years ago on the HDD so that one game couldn't chew up the entire drive. I doubt there's anything out there currently that uses the HDD aside from FFXI, so there's no need for the limit anymore.

The original 20, 60 and 80GB PS3s were backwards compatible... its been over a year since I quit my job at a game store so my memory is a little rusty but if I remember right the 20 and 60GB were manufactured with actual PS2 components while the 80GB ran some sort of emulation software.

    I personally own a backwards compatible 60GB PS3.

You are correct about this. Prior to the 80gb model the reverse compatibility was done via hardware components while the later models started using software emulation because it was cheaper to manufacture if I recall correctly. I miss my 60gb ps3 sometimes.

I don't use mine for anything other than Netflix anymore. I found out very quickly after buying mine (the 60GB) that playing PS2 games on it was sort of pointless...since the freaking thing would constantly corrupt the "memory card" slot on the hard drive thus rendering hours of work useless. There were other annoying things such as graphical glitches and hang ups that made it pretty much more desirable to just keep my old PS2 hooked up to the TV.

What are they going to do with the original PS2 where the partition size is hard coded at 10gb?

From what I could understand from the JP thread, it used to be limited to 12 GB by Sony, but they're removed the restriction, or upped it to 21GB.
