there are a few major points that prevents pple from doing HELM in my eyes:

I've done a lot of Mining and Harvesting. never done excavating and just a little logging...

    - most of the time you get items you don't want.
    - the spawn points are spread out so you have to run most of the time in search for a mining/harvesting/etc point.
    - especially mining: Pickaxes break too much (I have full worker tunica set and after half an hour half of my pickaxes were broken)! even in low level dungeons. ->Ores aren't stackable<-, if you're not a high level smither you have to leave once your (already) minimal inventory space is filled up.
    - In High-level dungeons you don't want to bother for sneak & invisible besides the constant search for spawn points.

    My suggestions:
    - Make "rare" results more common. As Maaroh said: create special HELM only items that give you a reason to spend so much time on running around. for example special ores: halfes the chance of being lost during failed synthesis; would be nice for crafting skillups.
    - maybe add a HELM (status effect) to FoV/GoV books under field support: lets you travel through a dungeon/area without being aggroed by monsters, but you cannot zone or attack monsters in order to prevent players from using this buff just for free sn/inv in normal areas.
    - make ores stackable(?) to 4 at least.

When someone mines an item from HELM, they get it, but it is signed with their name. If that person crafts the item, it has a lower break rate. There ya go. (As a side effect, signed items in general would have lower break rates, but considering the cost of signing, this wouldn't be too bad.)
