Saying I need a pre-order code for early access as a Legacy player.

What I'm now wondering at this point is, once the 27th comes around or even before then, is there some sort of game code which I need to register? I'm asking since it seems like you need to register something unless SE is planning on giving us something the day before the launch of the game.

No need to register anything afaik.
ALL 1.0 players can play for free between 27th of August and 9th of September.

I do hope this is the case because when I start up the client, it says there is no valid service account. Maybe it's only referring to the early access and I'll get a different message once release starts?

It's possible that they are restricting it now due to the load expected from players that do have early access.
A response from rep/dev would help to clear things up though.

Yeah, my spouse has the same issue, 1.0 non-legacy and the launcher says no valid account. Hoping it fixes itself by the 27th.

Ah there.... I have FFXIV as an Active Service Account but don't have the legacy pic next to it.... Dam... Thought I was a Legacy since I played 1.0 and never cancelled...

You had to have paid for 3months after paid service began as well.
Since paid service began so long after launch, you had to actively log in again and set up payment even if you had done that at launch already.
