    Materia

    So I've had a couple of ideas about the materia system and want to see what you all think and if it will be at all possibly in ARR.

    Dropped Materia
    So my first idea is for materia that is dropped in a dungeon or by a primal/hnm etc. This materia would be a rare drop and exclusive (cannot be converted from spiritbonded gear) and the stats would be unique and slightly superior. Think this would give added value to content, as gear gets old, materia tends to stay useful. And as you can blow materia up, it gives reason to go back and do said content again to gather some more of that particular materia.

    Combining lower tier materia
    Second idea is to be able to craft several lower tier materia's to create a higher tiered version. So for example the recipe could be 3x t3 bloodthirst materia + x amount of crystals to create a t4 bloodthirst materia. Similar recipes could be used for t1's and t2's also. I don't know about most of you, but I used to npc most of my lower tiered materia or waste it just trying to go for a 5 meld for the achievement. This would give it some value at least. But I don't think the synth should be easy, maybe even have to hq for it to work.

    Please share your thoughts and pick this apart if you wish

    Other ideas are welcome

    I'd love to see both ideas. The first one because I think the materia system as is will be problematic when you want to add more, and special materia. If you add 20 types of materia tier IV when you go to make a materia you will have a big reduction in chance to get the materia you wanted. So making some monster drops is a great idea not to screw up the materia system.

    The second idea is great because tier I and tier II is pretty useless, and as the game moves on the tier that is useless will go up like in 1-2 years we may have materia VII.

    I like combining lower tier materia idea. I sold countless number of them to the NPCs.

    I think it would be quite cool to have Materia drops but i would prefer it to be very limited, not from normal mobs.

    Combining materia could get unwieldy but a good way to clean up inventory or at least a chance to get something useful from crap.

    Either way, we will find out in Phase 3, or w/e phase its being added.

    Definately not from normal mobs; bosses, nms, primals, chests only

    I like both ideas. There always seems to be an abundance of lower tier materia, but that was probably due to there being so many top-heavy leveled players and the lower level tier went widely unused unless people were trying for the Gambler's Crown. Being able to convert your lower tier materia to higher would make it easier for people to experiment more with multi-melds. I'm not sure whether I'd want it to be a guaranteed chance or have a chance at failure though. It depends on how rare SE intends to keep some of the higher tier materia.

    As far as drops go, I'd like it to be restricted to bosses only and for them to be a unique type of materia that you couldn't get by spiritbonding, but that's just my personal take on it. If combining materia were allowed, there will be more of the max tier materia available, so being able to get more of whatever's already available from bosses probably wouldn't matter a whole lot. I think they kind of started going in this direction with drops in that you could only get certain materia from spiritbonding Primal weapons.

    All in all, good ideas to hopefully keep materia meaningful when choices have to be made between regular gear with materia and unique/untradeable equipment.

    the first point was already implemented in a way. having the prime's weapons turn unto rare materias, that only those weapons could get. ofcource you had to SB the weapon and all. but it was there, and it would be nice to cut the middle man and make it drop.

    on the second point, it would be awesome and they could add a new DOH "materia crafter" that would make that, and use a bit of the system from Crisis Core FFVII. that would be nice. and the quality of the craft would make the mod of the materia E.G. making a t4 int materia with 0-300 quality would be +16, 301-600 +17, 601-800 +18, 801-950 +19 and 951-1000 +20 or something like that

    Yes, and yes - like both ideas. Especially combining lower-tier materia. At the end of 1.x my retainers were filled with lower-tier materia that I was saving for... well, for no good reason I suppose lol. It'd be nice to be able to do something useful with them besides "donating" them to an NPC for laughable gil...

    I'd also really like to see "rare" materia that either affect current abilities/skills/spells/etc. or even granted a new ability/skill/spell/etc. E.g., "Enhances 'Cure'", or "Grants spell: 'Tornado'", or "Chance to stun target when using 'Provoke'", "Grants ability: 'Flee'", etc. etc.

    Also, though this may not be a popular idea for some (no hard feelings), I'd really like to get away with double, triple, etc. etc. melding. Revamp materia in a way such that when melded to an item by itself it is "good-enough" (however you want to qualify that) with just that one materia.

    I think melding lower level materia will be a thing come release. Head start phase 4 = Profit come release.
