Manly miner and lumberjack here. Not worried about this at all, in the least. Highly doubt they'll be hauling in stacks of cobalt or anything. Probably just come back with some brimstone and feathers. Then people will get sick of getting a bunch of -1 inventory space junk to npc and have their retainer slaves do something actually semi-sorta-useful like water the plants or feed the chocobos.

I get not having faith in SE to not be extremely derp about stuff, but it's pretty hardcore crazy to think they're so dumb that there is any real chance that they'll turn our storage servants into gathering class killing robots while also doing an expansive overhaul to all the DoL jobs...and what-the-heck-ever else this major overreaction of a thread is about.

Pretty much this ^ I will venture that not many people here played SWTOR for too long, anyway your NPC 'friends' in that game would gather and craft for you, however they never came home with stacks of stuff and if they did it was small stacks of the cheaper stuff, the more rare things came one at a time. And you had to level them in order to get the really good stuff.

It's really wasn't as lucrative and quick as doing it yourself. The way I did was I had the guys waiting in the ship gather and craft while I had the other guys fight with me, the gathering and crafting took time and the higher leveled items took more and more time to get/make. So while I was gaining things while getting quests done it wasn't anywhere near what I would get if I just dedicated my own time to do it myself.

It seemed pretty balanced anyway. However yes people making alts just for this might be an issue.

Typical morons jumping the gun with their "End of the World" over-reactions...

1) The gathering done by retainers is very unlikely to be as overpowered as you are imagining it to be. i.e. you will likely not be able to send them to gather anything above your own gatherer's level, and even then likely not to return with such huge quantities. In short, there will probably be major restrictions in place from the beginning which means your retainer cannot gather anything near the rate you could normally gather.

So why don't we just wait and see... oh no, here is a bandwagon, i'll jump on it and berate the system before it's in place!! #endofgatheringforall

2) If you enjoy gathering, you don't have to use the retainer... you could, ya know, JUST GO AND GATHER YOURSELF.

I have strong feelings about this because it is my fave thing to do in game. No. I will not chill out until I have confirmation that retainers won't be allowed near near my favorite job.

I take great pride in coming home to fill my store with gathered goods for people to buy. Not only that but making my own things and helping people in my LS.

Its frankly the Only thing gatherers have left.

Note the worse case scenario, but do not dwell on it.
Express your feelings and concerns, but don't let them run wild.
Try to think of ways this could be a good thing and how you might like to see it done.

In short, try to be constructive and assist the game in growing. Not the person going "OMG WTF FML!!!"
