I disagree on that front. The Elder Scrolls Online also boasts player housing and opens it up to absolutely everybody, has each house be account bound and there's no risk of any house purchased being removed. At some points, they've even given out rather sizable houses for free.

It's been a common complaint for years that the housing system in FFXIV needs work. I'm lucky enough to own a large house, so this isn't even a case of me speaking as someone who lacks a house. I just think it's a very predatory system and deliberately kept that way to encourage players to subscribe rather than actually take a break. I know if I lost my house, I would have absolutely no interest in returning even if the game improved since the chances of getting lucky enough to acquire a replacement is minimal.

Furthermore, the housing demolition recently reactivated the day before FFXVI launched. A convenient coincidence, especially when we're encouraged to play other games during a content drought.

I also have very little sympathy for the idea that it would be 'too expensive' for the company to maintain houses for players. Especially given the sort of marketing gimmicks that the company throws money at, or the likes of Babylon's Fall, Forspoken and the various mobile games that have been recently discontinued.

Who knows? Maybe if Yoshi-P actually sat down with regular players and got some polite but firm criticism these issues would be addressed. Though it's clear he'd rather listen to 'content creators' and 'influencers' who do little but praise him in exchange for exclusive invites to special events and free merchandise that they shamelessly promote on their streams.
